  • Stochastic Modular Robotic Systems: A Study of Fluidic Assembly Strategies (updated) Transcript of Narration: Modular robotic systems typically assemble using deterministic processes where modules are directly placed into their target positions. In previous work, we have demonstrated stochastic modular robots that take advantage of ambient environmental energy for the transportation and delivery of components to their where they are needed. By limiting module complexity, this approach offers potential scalability to large numbers of small modules. We have developed a computationally-efficient simulation for modeling a modular robotic system that assembles in a stochastic fluid environment. First we calibrate this simulation using both high fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations and physical experiments. We then use this simulator to develop assembly strategies that overcome the key challenges of stochastic assembly: Namely, the slow assembly rates and the inability to precisely predict component availability. The strategy seen here is a raster-scan approach that assembles layers one at a time to avoid leaving holes that cannot be filled. While it can result in perfect assemblies, this approach took the most time to assembly the target structure. Alternative strategies include weighting the modules to improve alignment, repelling modules occasionally to prevent clumping, and first assembling a perfect skeleton structure then filling in the remaining structure quickly.   • Demo Proj 0809- Fluidic Motor #1 In the 2007-2008 school year I created a quarter project for my chemistry students where they had to research and present a chemical demonstration. I did this for several reasons: first it got me both a lab-type and partner opportunity in one project, next it gave the students and me a chance to see some demonstrations that don't really fit into the curriculum, and finally I wanted them to better appreciate the work that I personally put into doing my demonstrations. Overall the project was a success and we all enjoyed the new demonstrations. The project has been slightly modified, but has become a permanent part of my curriculum (these videos are from the 08-09 school year). In these videos I've tried my best to film the performance of the demonstration. The explanation of it was given by the students to their peers in a lecture format as a part of the project, but has not been filmed. I will do my best to explain briefly how the demonstration works, but feel free to ask questions. In this demonstration two students students create a fluid motor in a petri dish by electrolysizing a salt solution and placing a magent underneath the solution so that the charged particles get deflected in to a cycle/current.
