  • Catbird adopts cardinal fledgling This cardinal fledgling was adopted by a catbird after it's nest was knocked from a tree during a thunderstorm. The fledging was from in town, and we live out in the country. Our friends gave this bird to us, and we kept it on our screened deck, and fed it baby budgie food. You will hear the call of the catbird at the beginning. In the background you'll hear manuvers from a nearby military base, as well as a skid loader coming up a hill near this bush. We noticed the catbirds, normally reclusive, coming to our screened in deck, leaving piles of berries outside the door. We thought perhaps they were responding to the cries from the fledgling. After noticing these catbirds, we prayed, and decided the next day to put this bird in a bush and watch to see what would happen. A few observations we made were: 1. Several other types of birds came to investigate this cardinal fledgling, and at one time there were four there at the same time; robin, gold finch, sparrow, and catbird, but only the catbirds fed it. Another bird that visited the fledging was an oriel, but I didn't get a picture of that. 2. Catbirds feed their fledglings mainly berries, while the diet of a cardinal is mainly seeds and insects, this difference didn't seem to affect the cardinal's acceptance of what was offered. 3. Catbirds are rarely seen, mostly heard. They prefer to stay in the woods, and they did eventually coax the cardinal deep into the woods. We wonder if it survived to adulthood (a lot of wild cats ...
