The Fjords of Norway - World Heritage UNESCO has included the fjords of Norway, exemplified by the Nærøyfjord and the Geirangerfjord, on its renowned World Heritage List. The Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord now enjoy the same recognition as the Great Wall of China, the Great Pyramids of Egypt, Zambias Victoria Falls and the Grand Canyon in USA. The west Norwegian fjords are classic, superbly developed fjords, considered as the type locality for fjord landscapes in the world. They are comparable in scale and quality to other existing fjords on the World Heritage List and are distinguished by the climate and geological setting. The Naeroyfjord and the Geirangerfjord areas are considered to be among the most outstanding fjord areas on the planet. The Naeroyfjord is perhaps the most spectacular arm of the Sognefjord, and the narrowest fjord in the world, at on point only 250 metres across with mountains towering more than 1700 metres above its tranquil waters. The fjord area has been inhabited for about 10 000 years. The area has been farmed for almost 3000 years, and farming is still important for people living along the fjord. The west Norwegian fjords are situated one on each side of the Jostedalsbreen Glacier and comprise of the municipalities of Aurland, Lærdal, Vik and Voss on the south side and the municipalities of Norddal and Stranda on the north side.

Despite their richness on nutrition, nettles are not common in cooking. If you have them in the garden, this is a fine way to get rid of them. Use gloves! Otherwise, you can also use spinach only. Serves 4 1 pound (225 g) smoked trout or salmon, finely sliced) 4 cups (a little less than 1 l) loosely packed nettles 4 cups (a little less than 1 l) loosely packed spinach 1 cup (a little more than 2 dl) heavy cream 1 cup (a little more than 2 dl) chicken stock (or bullion) ½ tablespoon flaky salt 1 teaspoon finely chopped rosemary ¼ teaspoon finely grated nutmeg For the nettle and spinach soup: Remove the stem from the spinach and nettles. Transfer to a medium pot, add stock and cream, and place over medium high heat. Bring to a boil and let simmer for 10 minutes, until entirely collapsed, and the nettles thoroughly unarmed. Transfer the soup to a blender and pure until smooth. Return to pot and reheat over low heat. Add salt to taste. Transfer to serving bowls, and sprinkle with nutmeg and rosemary. Using your hands, clean the fish, removing any skin and bone. Cut the fish in bite-sized pieces, and arrange on top of the soup. Drizzle with yoghurt, and serve right away. Norwegian Fjords Geologically, a fjord is a long, narrow inlet with steep sides or cliffs, created in a valley carved by glacial activityFjords are formed when a glacier cuts a U-shaped valley by abrasion of the surrounding bedrock. Many such valleys were formed during the recent ice age. Glacial melting is accompanied by rebound of Earth's crust as the ice load and eroded sediment is removed (also called isostasy or glacial rebound). In some cases this rebound is faster than sea level rise. Most fjords are deeper than the adjacent sea; Sognefjord, Norway, reaches as much as 1300 m (4265 ft) below sea level. Fjords generally have a sill or rise at their mouth caused by the previous glacier's terminal moraine, in many cases causing extreme currents and large sal***er rapids (see skookumchuck). Saltstraumen in Norway is often described as the world's strongest tidal current. Its name is derived from Hjaltland, the Old Norse name for Shetland - the routes to Shetland ran through Hjeltefjorden. Misty Fjords National Monument Recorded June 18, 2007. Misty Fjords National Monument covers 2294343 acres of Tongass National Forest in the Panhandle of southeast Alaska. The area is called "The Yosemite of the North" for its similar geology. Light-colored granite, about 50 to 70 million years old has been sculpted by glaciers that gouged deep U-shaped troughs throughout the monument. The monument certainly lived up to its name on the day of my visit, as it was definitely misty. During the video of my cruise of the area we also see some wildlife in the form of a wolf and a killer whale. From:
