2009 Fistula Day in Guinea (in French) / Fistula Care / EngenderHealth (In French, without subtitles.) Every year, EngenderHealth organizes a national "Fistula Day" in Guinea to raise awareness of fistula among communities and key decision makers. Held this year (2009) on May 21, it marked the official launch of Fistula Care project activities at a fourth site in Guinea, Labe Regional Hospital, the main hospital of the country's central mountain region. The opening ceremony, held at the amphitheater of the local training center, was well-attended by dignitaries from across the country, including the Governor and the Mayor of Labe, the Mayor of Kissidougou, officials from the Ministries of Health, Social Affairs, and Decentralization, and representatives of the US Ambassador to Guinea and the Mission Director of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which supports Fistula Care. The Peace Corps, United Nations Population Fund, World Health Organization, OIC International, civil society organizations, the private sector, and the media were also represented. Fistula repairs at Labe began in early June. The hospital builds on the successful model Fistula Care developed at other sites in Guinea: Kissidougou District Hospital, Ignace Deen University Teaching Hospital, and Jean Paul II Hospital in Conakry. The Fistula Care project supports surgical repair, prevention, and reintegration into society for repaired women and creates partnerships between health facilities, communities, and local governments. What is Obstetric Fistula? ( On Tuesday December 2nd, 2009, a member of the Fistula Free Climb asked six Cornell students what they thought of when they heard the words "Obstetric Fistula." Five out of six had never heard of it before, and the one that had was a friend of the group. Although amusing at times, their ignorance is just a small sign of our societies level of education about this horrific condition. Obstetric fistula is a hole in the birth c*** caused by days of unsuccessful labor. Prolonged obstructed labor cuts off the blood supply to the tissue planes that separate the urinary tract and rectum from the vagina. The woman is almost always left with a stillborn baby and unrelenting incontinence of urine or stool. This has dramatic negative social consequences, usually resulting in complete rejection from family and community. From January 10th to 22nd, a group of young leaders will climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise money and awareness for OperationOF, a non-profit organization which helps women suffering from obstetric fistulas. Working to End Fistulas in Congo Giving birth in good conditions can mean the difference between life and death. It can also prevent illnesses from occuring that can have disastrous consequences -- like obstetric fistulas. If a woman is experiencing complications during delivery and does not receive obstetric care, a fistula can form. A fistula is an opening between the bladder and the vagina, or between the rectum and the vagina. Close to a million and a half women in Africa suffer from them. Most of these women are shunned by society. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) runs a project at the Masisi General Hospital in North Kivu Province. Working with the Congolese health authorities, MSF offers surgery, primary and secondary health care, and support for victims of ***ual violence. In this surgery performed by Dr. Hamid Djalilian, the oval window and round window areas are grafted. The patient developed a fistula after a fall and had symptoms of dizziness with blowing of the nose, and vertigo with loud sounds, coughing, sneezing, baring down, etc. This surgery is performed when a blood patch procedure (first described by Dr. Djalilian) is only temporarily effective.
