US fishermen struggle amid oil clean up The US government's point man on the Gulf oil spill says BP's blown-out well is not securely plugged to his satisfaction and that the drilling of the relief well must go ahead. Retired Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen has said that although no oil is flowing from the well, the "bottom kill" operation must be completed. It was suspended earlier this week because of bad weather and could take four days to retstart. The government estimates that the broken well leaked close to five million barrels of oil before it was capped and sealed. And last week, it released a report stating only a quarter of that oil remains on, or underneath the water. But in the fishing town of Lafitte, Louisiana, many people who depend on the Gulf waters for their living are questioning the government's claims. Al Jazeera's Cath Turner reports.

Fishermen of Varkala Varkala is a coastal town in the state of Kerala [1], India. It is 51 km north of Thiruvananthapuram city. Varkala is the only place in southern Kerala where one can find cliffs just adjacent to the Arabian sea. These sedimentary and laterite cliffs are a unique geological feature in the otherwise flat Kerala coast, and is known among geologists as Varkala Formation. There are numerous water spouts and spas on the sides of the cliffs. A famous beach resort, Varkala is also famous for its 2000 year old Janardanaswamy temple, which is an important Vaishnavaite shrine in India and is referred to as Dakshin Kashi (Benares of the south). The temple is located close to the Papanasam beach is considered to have holy waters which wash away sins, and is also an important Ayurveda treatment centre. The temple has an ancient bell removed from a shipwreck, donated by the captain of the Dutch vessel which sank near Varkala without causing any casualties. Another major landmark in Varkala is the Sivagiri Mutt, established by the great social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. The hill-top mausoleum of Sree Narayana Guru, also located there, is one of the most famous buildings in Kerala. The adjacent hills house the East-West University of Brahmavidya and Sree Narayana Gurukulam, both organizations belong the late Nataraja Guru, a split-away disciple of Sree Narayana Guru and his famous disciples Muni Narayana Prasad and Guru Nitya Chaitanya Yati. Russian fishermen catch Mermaid??? alien??? and eat it Village residents from the Rostov region of Russia caught a weird creature two weeks ago after a strong storm in the Sea of Azov. The shark-looking creature was producing strange squeaky sounds. The fishermen originally believed that they had caught an alien and decided to film the monster with the help of a cell phone camera. The footage clearly shows the creatures' head, body and long tail. The bizarre catch was weighing almost 100 kilograms, the Komsomolskaya Pravda reports. However, ufologists and scientists were greatly disappointed when they found out that the fishermen had eaten the monster. They said that they were not scared of the creature so they decided to use it as food. One of the men said that it was the most delicious dish he had ever eaten. Chairman of the Anomalous Phenomena Service, Andrei Gorodovoi, stated that the creature, which he could see on the short video, was an anomalous being. However, it could hardly be described as an extraterrestrial form of life, he added. Gorodovoi rejected the version about mermaids too. Fishermen find oil and dispersants on Mississippi shrimping and oyster grounds Angered by claims from state and federal officials that Gulf Coast waters are safe and clean, fishermen took their own samples of the waters off of Pass Christian, Mississippi on August 11th, 2010. I had the opportunity to go along and see first hand the results, as well as the thin, oily sheen and bubbles caused by dispersant that streak the Mississippi sound. The testing method is simple: tie an absorbent rag to a weighted hook, then drop it overboard for a minute or two. In all but one of the samples, the rags came up with brown oily substance which the fishermen identify as a mix of crude oil from the BP disaster and toxic dispersants. Read more:

Cameraman Simeon Houtman was assaulted by an axe-wielding fisherman after stepping onshore to film the incident. "The fisherman raised the axe above his head with one arm and tried to knock Simeon back with his other. Simeon jumped back onto the ship just before the mob threw our gangplank into the water," said Peter Hammarstedt, First Officer of the Farley Mowat. Captain Alex Cornelissen requested assistance from the French police--at least half a dozen of whom were present at the scene--but they did nothing to defend the ship or crew against the mob. Instead, the police suggested that Sea Shepherd should leave St. Pierre immediately. Captain Cornelissen explained to the police that it would take some time to warm the engines in order to leave port safely and avoid serious engine damage.
