National Science Foundation Grant: Academic Spotlight The National Science Foundation recently awarded $265000 to Missouri State University for a research for undergraduate institutions grant. The research is focused on highly magnetic materials called ferromagnets. The project will lead to the potential development of new spin-based devices such as ultra sensitive magnetic field sensors, quantum-based logic and memory for high speed computation. Training and skills acquired by students through this research will prepare them for employment in high-tech industry, academic institutions and government and private research laboratories. The principal investigators for this project include Kartik Ghosh, Pawan Kahol and Ram Gupta. We are pleased to have Dr. Kahol and Dr. Gupta with us today. And on the court to congratulate them is Vice President for research and economic development, Dr. Jim Baker. Ladies and gentleman please acknowledge the effort of these two Missouri State researchers. They are in the Bancorp South academic spotlight.
Permeability of different materials Quick video on permeability of different materials inspired by a twitter question from @aonomus about detecting different types of metals by their effects on a coil carrying RF. What I didn't talk about and you might like to Google: paramagnets, diamagnets, ferromagnets, Ferrimagnets, relative permeability, magnetic susceptibility, magnetic anisotropy, hysteresis, saturation, Barkhausen effect... The magnetic properties of matter are as complex as they are fascinating, lots of fun to learn about. Their electric duals are just as cool too!

Investigating the formation process of materials to achieve new capabilities [Keio Spintronics Network - Yoshino Laboratory, Tokyo Institute of Technology] The Yoshino Group at Tokyo Institute of Technology is working to develop high-quality spintronics materials. In terms of physics, the researchers aim to ***yze surface dynamic processes associated with crystal growth on a semiconductor surface, and investigate tunnel magnetoresistance and reversal of magnetization by current injection. Q."The electric properties are mainly dominated by the group of electrons with highest energy. In the conventional magnetic materials, those electrons are consisted of the electrons having both two possible spin orientations. Materials, in which those electrons consist of only one of the possible spin orientations, are called half-metals. When you pass a current through such a material, actually, only the electrons with spins aligned in one direction flow. When you form the spintronics devices consisting of such a material and semiconductors, the results are very interesting, and you can greatly enhance the device performance. One of our aims is to fabricate devices like that." In general, device structures are made using methods based on ultra-high vacuum. But because the atoms deposited onto the surface are aligned self-organizingly, the desired properties are not necessarily obtained. The Yoshino Group considers that first of all, it's important to understand the process by which the materials are formed on the surfaces. So the researchers use electron ...
