- Woodland Ferns - Joey Williamson I'm Joey Williamson, and I'm a horticulturist with the ClemsonHome & Garden Information Center. Today we will be looking at some woodland ferns that are easy to grow. There are many beautiful ferns that are popping up now, & some that are in full bloom. The first one I would like to show you is the cinnamon fern (Osmunda cinnamomea). The cinnamon fern has these fertile fronds that come up bearing its spores, which is rather unique for a fern. Most ferns will make their spores (and they spread by spores, not seeds), with the spores in little packages on the backside of the leaves. But in this species of fern, they have sterile fronds and fertile fronds. There are cinnamon colored hairs on these fertile fronds that give it the look of a big tall cinnamon stick. These ferns would like to have moist soils, and often they grow near stream banks, or bogs, or in a wet area near a lake. They can tolerate some sun if they are given adequate water. Usually they like rich, moist, well-drained soils, with adequate water to keep them growing and prevent the fronds from dying back. The cinnamon fern is a very handsome fern. It does lose its leaves with the first frost, so it is a deciduous fern. It is one of our bigger and better native ferns, and an excellent addition for your garden. The fern we are visiting now is the northern maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum). This is a delicate-leafed fern that does spread by underground stems called rhizomes. So by putting in a few plants ...

- Growing Japanese Ferns If you've ever tried to plant in the shady part of your garden or dedicated a certain area for shade loving plants, you've probably run across ferns. There are literally hundreds of them to choose from with a wide range of plant form, size and always with a beautiful delicate texture. One of my all time favorites is the Japanese Painted Fern. If you'll take a little closer look at the leaf or frond, you can see how this plant got its name. This plant looks as though it has been meticulously hand painted with its burgundy veining and the lighter colors give it almost a metallic look. This subtle variegation helps the plant to stand out, making a stronger statement in shady areas. And it also provides a nice contrast to other shade loving perennials like hostas, astilbe and coralbells. Last year, when I planted these, they were really quite small; they were just in four inch pots. And as you can see, over the past season, they've really flourished. Whenever I plant Japanese Painted Ferns or any other fern for that matter, I always like to incorporate a lot of rich humus in the soil, and if I can, in the form of compost like this. Since these have done so well, I'm adding a few more to the base of this tree. Now when I fertilize them, I mix a solution that's half the recommended strength. You see, ferns are more delicate than many other plants that you might plant in your garden. Now if you're looking for a plant that has beautiful foliage as pretty as a bloom, you might ...

- How To Grow Ferns New England Wild Flower Society has thousands of native plants in a natural woodland setting. The Society owns and operates Garden in the Woods, the largest landscaped collection of wildflowers in the Northeast, as its headquarters and as a public botanic garden. The Garden, located in Framingham, MA, serves as New England's premier showcase of native plants and as a center for botanical and horticultural study and enjoyment. For over 30 years, the Society has focused on perfecting techniques to propagate and grow more than 450 species of native plants, and selling them as an alternative to wild-collected plants. The Society owns and operates Nasami Farm, in Whately, MA, our rapidly growning native plant nursery, where we produce over 75000 plants annually for homewoners, landscape professionals, restoration projects, and towns. Over the past decade, the Society has prepared itself for the plant conservation, habitat protection, and environmental leadership challenges of the 21st century. If industrialization, development, and pollution have severely challenged plant and habitat conservation in our first century, the next century will be even more demanding. In our second century, we seek to sustain and expand the conservation gains of our first 100 years.

- Hardy Evergreen Ferns - Millie Davenport Hi, I amMillie Davenport, a horticulture extension agent with the Clemson University Home and Garden Information Center. Today we are looking at Hardy Evergreen Ferns. We are here in the South Carolina Botanical Gardens and we are going to look at a few evergreen ferns. Now, when we think of evergreen, we think of plants usually like our trees and shrubs that hold their foliage for 2 to 3 years. Well, with evergreen ferns it is a little different. They actually will hold their foliage through the winter months and then that foliage will actually die back as spring comes on and that is when the new foliage will come on. Now, the first fern we are going to look at is a native fern and it is the Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides). The Christmas Fern gets its common name from a couple of different stories. There are three different stories that I have heard about this common name. The first one is if you look at the pinnae or the actual leaflets on the frond, they look like a Christmas stocking or a winter sleigh. The other story is that this is one of the few things that is green at the time of Christmas. And the other story, which I preferred and liked the reason for this name, is that the early settlers of North America used the Christmas Fern to decorate during the holiday season. The Christmas Fern has a classic fern shape with these really nice, arching branches. And the fronds themselves will reach about 1 to 2 feet long and the widest parts of the frond is in ...
