  • Sei Whale Washed Ashore A Sei whale was washed ashore on the North bank of the Humber Estuary near the village of Skeffling, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. This grounding occurred approximately the last week of September, 2011. When I found out about it, I went down to see the spectacle. I grabbed the cameras and went over. By the time I arrived and found the whale - it was getting dark, so apologies for that, forgot my light. Unfortunately some marine biologists or someone like it had gotten there earlier and they had left a real mess, distgusting, most unpleasant. The stench was horrific. It must have been polluting the water and land as it putrefied. The temperature this week has been 28 degrees C.! Unusually high for this time of year, so it will be a place to avoid for definite now. I felt pity for whoever it was that would have to clear it away. The "fell monger". The farmer whose land backs onto this stretch of the Humber (he was a character, very good humoured, and a local musician) told me it was estimated to weigh seven tonnes. At about eleven meters in length, I wasn't at all surprised to learn that. It wasn't even full grown apparently. It is a shame that we can't do a lot to help these animals when this happens. Maybe some one will come up with a solution? Maybe sonar at the mouth of the estuary. We can give the Humber pilots cattle prods to prod the whales out to sea in the right direction...All I can really think of at the moment. Have a look at the original videos on my You ...
