traditional dance, thaur fasnacht festival, nr. innsbruck, austria 8 02 09 Fastnacht or Fasnacht is the pre-Lenten carnival in Alemannic folklore in Switzerland, southern Germany, Alsace and western Austria. The processions, songs, dances, costumes and lyrics of the Fasnacht traditions (Schemenlaufen) are ancient and rooted in pagan traditions of the Alps. The processions aim to get rid of the demons of winter and awake the spirits of spring, The larger processions or Schemenlaufen is held only once every four years (2004, 2008 and so on). However, there are smaller events held on an annual basis. Traditional processions of the Perchten welcome the springtime. The Schönperchten (beautiful Perchts) represent the birth of new life in the awakening nature, the Schiachperchten ("ugly Perchts") represent the dark spirits of wintertime. Farmers yearn for warmer weather and the Perchtenlauf (Run of Perchts; typical scenery) is a magical expression of that desire. The nights between winter and spring, when evil ghosts are supposed to go around, are also called Rauhnächte (rough nights) I took this particular video showing traditional Tyrolean dance group which was part of large procession in the village of Thaur, outside Innsbruck. Note there are no women in this footage. Groups where female characters such as witches and maids feature are played out by men in this particular procession while women seem to take a minimal role sometimes taking on male personas.

basler fasnacht 2010 - Cortèges The Carnival of Basel (German: Basler Fasnacht) is the biggest carnival in Switzerland and takes place annually between February and March in Basel. It has recently been listed as one of the top fifty local festivities in Europe. The Basler Fasnacht starts on the Monday after Ash Wednesday at precisely 4:00 am with the so-calledMorgestraich. The carnival lasts for exactly 72 hours and, therefore, ends on Thursday morning at 4:00 am. During this time, the old town of Basel is ruled by the Fasnächtler (the participants), where they run loose in the streets and restaurants. Basler Fasnacht is often referred to as die drey scheenschte Dääg ("the three most beautiful days"). Unlike the Carnival celebrations held in other cities on the Rhine (such as those in Cologne, Mainz and Düsseldorf), the Basel Carnival displays a clear separation between participants and spectators. Die Basler Fasnacht ist die grösste Fasnacht der Schweiz. Sie beginnt am Montag nach Aschermittwoch um 4:00 Uhr mit dem Morgestraich. Sie dauert exakt 72 Stunden und endet am Donnerstagmorgen um 4:00 Uhr mit dem Endstraich. In dieser Zeit wird die Basler Innenstadt von den Fasnächtlern beherrscht, die in ihren Cliquen durch die Strassen, Kneipen und Geschäfte ziehen. Basel Fasnacht - Morgestraich (Part 1 of 4) Morgestraich starts at 4:00am sharp. Everything is drownws in the high-pitched melodies of the piccolos (small flutes) and the beating of drums. Gigantic painted lanterns (Ladäärne) glow in the night. Smaller lanterns, the so-called Stäggeladäärne, are carried on long poles. And there are thousands of small Kopfladäärne (head lanterns) that the parade participants have fixed on top of their masks.
