  • Taft Lecture, Anthropology: Dr. Brigitte Demes 3/8 Dr. Brigitte Demes Department of Anatomical Sciences, Stony Brook University Gives the talk: Facultative bipedalism in primates: Understanding the evolution of human gait Abstract: Bipedal posture and locomotion are the earliest features that distinguish fossil hominids from their quadrupedal primate ancestors. South American capuchin monkeys, versed in both of these gait modalities, offer the opportunity to study what gait a quadrupedal primate adopts when it gets up on its hind legs. I have studied the mechanics of capuchin bipedalism in our primate gait laboratory and found that they use a bent-hip, bent-kneed running gait. The facultative bipedalism of other non-human primates, including our closest relative the chimpanzee, is also unlike the habitual bipedalism of humans. Based on these findings and anatomical constraints I conclude that the origin of human habitual bipedalism likely started as a bent-hip, bent-kneed gait. Speed would have been significantly impaired compared to quadrupedal limits, and the evolution of this gait was probably also not motivated by increasing locomotor efficiency. • Oxygen Does Not Eliminate Candida Dr. Jeff Mccombs reveals the truth behind oxygen based products that supposedly eliminate Candida. The intestinal tract is made up of 100 trillion organisms that are anaerobic (do not require oxygen to grow), including good bacteria. Introducing oxygen to your gut will eliminate and disturb those anaerobic organisms such as good and bad bacteria. It will NOT eliminate Candida, which is a facultative anaerob (lives in both an oxygen-rich environment, or an oxygen-deprived environment). For example, Thrush shows that Candida survives in the mouth, an oxygen-rich environment.Candida, which is a facultative anaerob (lives in both an oxygen-rich environment, or an oxygen-deprived environment). I invite any and all opinions on my identification. See my other videos of same species.
  • Mofo Grefy (Sweet & Savory Rice Cake) Recipe - Cuisine of Madagascar [Instructions en francais se trouvent ci-dessous] Ingredients (Makes ~30 mofo grefy): 1 C flour, 3/4 C rice semolina, 1 t yeast, 1 3/4 C hot water, 1/4 t salt, 1/2 t + 1/4 C sugar, 1/8 t vanilla extract (optional), 2 t sweetened condensed milk (optional), 2 t honey (optional). NOTE: For this recipe you will need a mold. Aluminum mofo gasy molds are difficult to find outside of Madagascar. A good replacement is an aebleskiver pan. Non-stick pans make it much easier to make this recipe successfully. In this video I use the Norpro non-stick aebleskiver pan available on . In a small bowl, combine yeast, 1/2 C hot water and 1/2 t sugar. Stir and set aside 5-7 minutes until yeast is proofed. Combine flours in a large bowl, then add 1 1/4 C water plus the proofed yeast mixture. Stir well, then cover and set in a pre-warmed oven for 4-8 hours (the longer the rice semolina soaks, the more authentic the texture of the mofo grefy will be). Afterwards, divide the batter equally among two bowls (approximately 1 C batter in each). You will make mofo gasy batter in one bowl and ramanonaka batter in the other. To make mofo gasy batter, add the remaining sugar, plus the vanilla, sweetened condensed milk and honey as desired, and stir. To make the ramanonaka batter, add salt and stir. In an aebleskiver pan or mofo gasy mold over medium heat, pour 1 t lard or oil in each indentation. Fill each one halfway with ramanonaka batter, then immediately fill the rest of the way with mofo ...

  • Septic Tank Aerator Remediate Your Septic Tank with Solar Aeration? Aeration of the septic tank can dramatically improve septic tank operation. Aeration helps prevent the tank from decomposing anaerobically or without oxygen—the process responsible for creating odour and greenhouse gas emissions. Now with solar aeration, the sun provides the POWER. All septic tanks are aerated one way or another. There are three types of bacteria in every septic system that process waste: aerobic, facultative, and obligate anaerobic. Aerobic bacteria require oxygen (compressed air) and are 20 times more aggressive/effective than anaerobic bacteria (which don't require air and produce dangerous greenhouse gases like methane). Typically there are very few of these type of bacteria in your septic tank. In a conventional septic system, most of the bacteria are facultative. Facultative bacteria also require oxygen but they can get it from non-aerated water by stripping oxygen molecules from other sources which directly produce the "rotten egg odor," also known as hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S). If you aerate the facultative bateria they will stop producing the H2S and odor and only produce an earthy smell. Solar powered aerators are available as after market products to eliminate H2S odor by directly aerating the influent flow in the septic tank and supplying the facultative bateria with oxygen. Just place the air diffuser near the incoming or influent end of the tank. Only our solar aerator is sized to minimize ...

  • Osprey Life inside the nest Sibling rivalry, cainism and cannibalism Osprey -- Life inside the nest - Sibling rivalry, cainism, cannibalism and moving carcass around the nest Just to show how bad weather and food shortage (that more likely was related to a brutal weather) can impact life in the Osprey nest check this video taken this spring. And an important note: this particular Osprey pair had no problems during last 5 years fledging even 3 chicks during two different years. Female almost never hunted during nesting seasons in past years -- this year she was providing at least half, if not more fish than male, and the pair was only able to raise one chicks that was often left alone for many hours as both parents were trying to catch fish at that time. Two younger chicks did not survive sibling rivalry and died from starvation, dehydration and probably overheating. I don't expect anybody to enjoy watching this video, quite appositive, but I think it is interesting to see the event that is very rare to witness in person. I know only about one documented case of Osprey cannibalism. Brood reduction - cainism (siblicide -- obligate and facultative) is well documented in raptors (and not only), but again, rarely witnessed. There are 4 major hypotheses trying to explain sibling aggression and siblicide: The Food-Amount Hypothesis (FAH) - the most generally accepted hypothesis, the Prey-Size Hypothesis, the Brood-Size Hypothesis and the Challenge Hypothesis. All have been supported by evidence but, however, no single hypothesis can fully explain ...

  • Cleaning Symbioses Cleaning symbioses are a ubiquitous behavior found in reef fish dynamics. Numerous species of fish and shrimp remove ectoparasites from other organisms. Some cleaners are obligate, such as the wrasses of the genus, Labroides, or facultative, such as some fish during the juvenile stage (Moosleitner 1980). Ectoparasites are common throughout reef fishes. For example, 44% of the 200 observed fishes on the Great Barrier Reef had the parasitic worm, Bucephalid metacercariae (Jones et al. 2004). The parasite is consumed by the cleaner as a dietary source (Jones et al. 2004). Removal of cleaner fish has been shown to indirectly decrease the diversity and abundance of fish that move between reefs, as these fish appear to choose reefs based on the presence of cleaner fish (Grutter et al. 2003). The following footage shows the interaction between the cleaner and client. • Wiki BioBomb info. Very interesting The M33 was an air-released munition: released at high altitude, it would eject its bomblets while still aloft. Each bomblet would then explode using its own detonator. The US Army Chemical Corps selected Brucella suis as its first mass-produced biological agent in 1949. Tests paved the way for the first mass-produced biological weapon in the US arsenal in 1952. The M33 cluster bomb was a 500-pound (lb) biological munition that initially carried the biological agent Brucella suis. Brucella spp. are small, Gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming rods, which function as facultative intracellular parasites that cause chronic disease, which usually persists for life. In the first stage of the disease, septicaemia occurs and leads to the classic triad of undulant fevers, sweating and migratory arthralgia and myalgia. In blood tests, is characteristic the leukopenia and anaemia, some elevation of AST and ALT and positivity of classic Bengal Rose and Huddleson reactions. This complex is, at least in Portugal, known as the Malta fever. During episodes of Malta fever, melitococcemia can usually be demonstrated by means of blood culture in tryptose medium or Albini medium. If untreated, the disease can give origin to focalizations or become chronic. The focalizations of brucellosis occur usually in bones and joints and spondylodiscitis of lumbar spine accompanied by sacroiliitis is very characteristic of this disease. Orchitis is also frequent in men. The ...

  • Myth #7 -- Oxygen kills Candida Another erroneous myth. Candida Albicans is facultative anaerobe, which means it can exist in oxygen-rich (mouth, skin) and oxygen-depleted (intestinal tract, body tissues) environments. Some studies indicate that is harder to eliminate in an oxygen-rich environment. That seems to be more true of thrush, but not as true for skin infections. Candida has the ability to evade reactive oxygen species that are produced by macrophages to destroy foreign substances in the body.

  • Optional Life - SHORT FILM A short film written and directed by Simone Rabassini. Year: 2007 (10') Language: Italian with english subtitles. THIS IS A COMPLETELY AMATEUR VIDEO, WITH NO PRODUCTION BEHIND. Storyline: Life is facultative? Are we really able to choose or we are victims of the media and of the consumistic world that we have created by our own? Optional life is a journey inside the fascinating and terrible publicity's world. A world populated by strange and evil characters! The making: the movie has been created in six months. It's a completely amatorial video that wants to destroy the mith of the publicity considered harmless and like an optional that simply makes part of our life. This short movie doesn't want to ***yse how the publicity influences our economy or society, but it wants to ***yse the moral damages that it produces. It is not an attack or a polemic but a vision of the future, maybe worst. Il video ha partecipato all'iniziativa WestOne promossa dal "Department of Education and Training" nel Western Australia, poi è andato in onda sul programma "HomeMade" di BonsaiTv ; premio segnalazione a Fuori Target Milano 2008 ; selezione a CortiVivi 2008 a Soliera ; finalista al concorso MenoDi Trenta Video Festival 08 ; NanoFilmFestival 2008; InvasioneDegliUltraCorti 12° edizione ; pre-selezione al Kimera Film Festival.
  • Taft Lecture, Anthropology: Dr. Brigitte Demes 8/8 Dr.
