Livestock exports: In for the long haul The Walmsley Family from Coolup focus their sheep enterprise entirely on supplying the live export market. Throughout the year, Eric Walmsley buys sheep out of sale yards to fatten in the paddock before selling them into the export market, with an annual turn-off of 30-35 thousand head per year. Current export volumes nationally run at around four million sheep a year. Prior to each shipment, export buyers spend up to three weeks sourcing sheep, drafting out any that are unsuitable to travel. The time between farm and ship is spent at an export feedlot, which enables the animals to acclimatise to the shipboard environment ensuring a happy healthy animal is delivered to the other end, which is the best outcome for the animal and for the industry.

Live export - Australian dairy cattle exported to Saudi Arabia In 2009, 1800 Australian dairy cattle were exported to one of the biggest dairies in the Middle East at Haradh, Saudi Arabia. The dairy cattle left on a livestock vessel from Portland Victoria and arrived in late February 2009. The trip took two weeks, and the heifers settled into their new home with the help of an Australian veterinarian. The National Agricultural Development Company's (NADEC) dairy in Haradh, Saudi Arabia is one of the largest dairies in the Middle East region and has imported almost 4800 Australian dairy cattle over the past three years. NADEC produces almost 1 million litres of milk per day from a herd of almost 42000 holsteins. The milk is processed on site, producing milk, cheese and other dairy products that are delivered to retail outlets across the region. Australian dairy cattle are highly regarded by NADEC for their quality, their disease-free status and the volume of milk they produce, making them in high demand in the Australian live export industry. In Australia, the cattle were prepared by the Elders live export team for months in advance of shipment, with bloodlines and production critical to selection.

Russia begins ban on grain exports Russia has imposed a ban on wheat and other grain exports until the end of the year after a severe drought and an outbreak of wildfires destroyed one-third of the harvest and ravaged agricultural land - sparking fears of increased costs and food shortages. An estimated 10 million hectares of agricultural land has been devastated by the fires following the worst heatwave in Russian history. Russia is one of the world's biggest producers of wheat, barley and rye. However a quarter of the country's crops have been destroyed, according to President Dmitry Medvedev. As a result of the ban, world wheat prices have rocketed to a two-year high and there are worries about a crisis in global food supplies. The type of wheat Russia produces is best suited to making unleavened bread, so much of its wheat is imported to the Middle East. Egypt is its largest market, followed by Turkey, Syria, Iran and Libya. In addition to affecting the cost of such food staples as bread, a shortage or hike in the price of grain is expected to have a knock-on effect across several European industries. BBC Newsnight: UK Bans Exports of "Bomb Detecting" Dowsing Rods January 22, 2010 on BBC Newsnight: The UK government has announced a ban on the export to Iraq and Afghanistan of some so-called "bomb detectors". It follows an investigation by the BBC's Newsnight programme which found that one type of "detector" made by a British company cannot work. The Iraqi government has spent $85m on the ADE-651 and there are concerns that they have failed to stop bomb attacks that have killed hundreds of people. The ban on the ADE-651 and other similar devices starts next week. via -
