Insidermedicine In Depth - May 25, 2010 - COPD and Beta Blockers Individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who take drugs used to treat a variety of heart conditions are less likely to have exacerbations of their lung disease and may even live longer, according to research published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Here is some information about COPD: • The term refers to several long-term diseases of the lungs, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis • It causes progressively worsening damage to the airways in the lungs related to swelling and blockage with mucous • It is usually caused by smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke Researchers from University Medical Center Utrecht studied the medical records of over 20 general medical practices in the Netherlands to look at the effects of beta-blockers on those with COPD. Beta-blockers are used to treat a variety of heart problems. Cardiovascular disease and COPD frequently co-occur in the same individuals, so it is important to know how drugs that treat one condition might affect the other. The investigators identified over 2000 individuals with COPD who were aged 45 and older. During an average follow-up period of just over seven years, more than 47% of the participants experienced an exacerbation of their COPD, and about 30% died. Those taking beta-blockers were less likely to experience an exacerbation of their COPD and were even less likely to die during the follow-up period than those not taking these drugs. The benefits of the beta-blockers were ...
COPD Film Further information: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to chronic bronchitis and emphysema, a pair of two commonly co-existing diseases of the lungs in which the airways become narrowed. This leads to a limitation of the flow of air to and from the lungs causing shortness of breath. In contrast to asthma, the limitation of airflow is poorly reversible and usually gets progressively worse over time. COPD is caused by noxious particles or gases, most commonly from smoking, which trigger an abnormal inflammatory response in the lung. The inflammatory response in the larger airways is known as chronic bronchitis, which is diagnosed clinically when people regularly cough up sputum. In the alveoli, the inflammatory response causes destruction of the tissues of the lung, a process known as emphysema. The natural course of COPD is characterized by occasional sudden worsenings of symptoms called acute exacerbations, most of which are caused by infections or air pollution. The diagnosis of COPD requires lung function tests. Important management strategies are smoking cessation, vaccinations, rehabilitation, and drug therapy (often using inhalers). Some patients go on to requiring long-term oxygen therapy or lung transplantation. Worldwide, COPD ranked sixth as the cause of death in 1990. It is projected to be the third leading cause of death worldwide by 2020 due to an increase in smoking rates and demographic changes in many countries.[2] COPD is the ...
No More MS Flare-up iLoveMyNewStemCells and all they have done and all they continue to do and all the potential they have. My recent MS flare-up was unexpected and wouldn't have been as severe as it was if I had been aggressive over the holidays and pushed to see the new neurologist after my MS specialist retired last year. A true MS exacerbation needs to be treated immediately and I waited a few weeks ... shame on me. I feel well and heading back to 100% again. The stem cells are still working and I'm still not proceeding with any MS medications. Amazing science and exciting times for new medicine!

MS Exacerbation and In the Hospital ~~~I am an SLE and RA patient (DX'd Oct 2005) who was recently DX'd with RRMS (Dec 23, 2009) ~~~ This was my first hospitalization because of the MS. This is just a simple personal video blog during my hospitalization. I was terrified the night I was admitted, as I thought I would not be able to walk again. I remember looking down at my legs, wondering how all the sensation of being in them the day before could be removed so fast! The spasticity was so severe that I was not able to stand or walk, nor could I bend my legs or bring my knees up to my chest while laying down. My bladder had to be catheterized in the ER, releasing one liter of urine which I couldn't void on my own. 125 mg of Solu~Medrol every 6 hours for 72 hours, to cool down the inflammation in my body. See the puffy face grrrl... I was a bit zoned out, to say the least! Two new sets of MRIs during my stay showing lesions on my spine, which weren't there in September of 2009. Spinal involvement is now part of my prognosis. I took baby steps with the walker in that hospital, and I assure you that it was like running a marathon at a snails pace! 10 feet down the hall was a huge feat! One week after the hospitalization, I am able to walk unassisted 6-8 feet, anything further than that requires bilateral forearm crutches. I'm still really fatigued, lacking muscle strength and coordination for simple motor tasks and am taking things slowly. My neuro doc said that it's too soon to tell if I will make a full ...

Insidermedicine In Depth - March 24, 2011 Researchers have identified the most effective type of bronchodilator for preventing exacerbations of symptoms in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Their study is published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Here is some information about COPD: • It refers to a chronic type of lung disease that makes breathing difficult and usually worsens over time • Both chronic bronchitis and emphysema are types of COPD, and many patients have both conditions • While there is no cure, relief can be found with drugs that open up the airways, known as bronchodilators Researchers from the Hospital of the Universities of Giessen and Marburg randomly assigned over 7000 patients with moderate-to-very-severe COPD to treatment for one year with one of two kinds of bronchodilator drugs. The first drug is called tiotropium or Spiriva and the second is called salmeterol or Fluticasone. Both drugs work by relaxing the smooth muscles in the lungs, but they do so by acting on different chemical pathways in the body. After one year, those taking tiotropium had a 17% reduced risk of experiencing an exacerbation of their symptoms, compared with those taking salmeterol. In addition, tiotropium use reduced the risk of having a severe exacerbation by 28%, reduced the annual number of moderate-to-severe exacerbations by 11% and the number of severe exacerbations by 27%. Both drugs were equally well tolerated. Today's research suggests that bronchodilating drugs such as tiotropium ...

CNS challenges of an MS and SLE patient Filmed 2 days before I was admitted to the hospital for an MS exacerbation. Moonface compliments of prednisone (won't I ever taper off?!?!) I was diagnosed with overlapping SLE and RA in October 2005 I was diagnosed with Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis December 23, 2009 (ho ho ho) I am a walking buffet of auto~immunity. That's funny, but not funny.... I have been waiting for my health insurance to cover my Copaxane RX since the date of my DX. FYI for non-MSers: The rocking back and forth is called ataxia. I cannot stand with my feet together without rocking back and forth or swaying side to side. This is caused by lesions on the cerebellum part of the brain. I won't stop living and I won't stop fighting back! I won't go down without a fight! I can't quit, my kiddo needs me! Auto~immunity may take parts of my health from me, but it won't stop me from being a mother to my daughter or aiming for a quality life. I salute the souls and lives of other's battling each day with chronic incurable diseases. Don't give up hope and never stop fighting!
