Adzrowo: Ewe music of Ghana, West Africa This is a performance (cleaned up version of an earlier vid that had horrid sound) of a rhythm called Adzrowo that I learned during an extended stay in the Volta Region of Ghana. My first teacher was Godwin Agbeli (now passed) and then his sons Emmanuel, Rubin, and Victor (along with half the other youth in the village!) This version of the rhythm is as it is played in their village, and like many rhythms it's probably a bit different elsewhere. The group here is Akoma, which was founded by Josselyne Price in the late 90's. They were originally graduate/undergraduate students from the University of Washington who wanted to play West African music as an independent study course/ensemble. Now the group still exists under the direction of an amazing Ashanti drummer named Yaw Amponsah, who is the son of famed palm wine guitarist Koo Nimo. (He's playing bell here) This version of Adzrowo includes a few different call/response patterns between the lead drum (atsimevu) and response drums (kidi and sogo). What's missing is the song, clapping, and amazing dance that always accompanies music from this culture. Update/Note as of February 2011: I continue to be amazed at both the number of hits, and the intensity of discussion here about race and musical culture. I intend to leave things as they stand, open for comments and insights. I ask only for respectful dialogue and the willingness to listen and critically think about other viewpoints, avoiding insults, flames and flinging ...

"Embraceable You" The Nat King Cole Trio "Embraceable You", which was written in 1928 by George and Ira Gershwin and first appeared in the 1930 Broadway musical, Girl Crazy, was recorded in 1944 on Capitol Records by the King Cole Trio, consisting of Nat King Cole piano, Johnny Millerbass, and Oscar Moore-guitar. It can be found on a 4 CD box set, Cool Cole, The King Cole Trio Story, on the Proper label released in 2002, a must have for any Nat King Cole fan.

Fadhili Williams - Malaika / Ewe Malaika Source of Fadhili William biography: Author: Doug Paterson One of Kenya's pop music legends, Fadhili William, passed away on February 11th 2001in Nairobi at the (reported) age of 62. His circa 1963 recording, Malaika (Angel), remains the definitive version of this now world-famous song. Although Fadhili's claim of authorship of the song is disputed among several Kenyans and Tanzanians, there is no argument that it is one of the best known songs throughout Africa. Along with Guantanamera, Malaika is in the warm-up repertoire of nearly every hotel band on the continent. Miriam Makeba had a lot to do with spreading Malaika beyond the bounds of East Africa. Her performances of the song brought it to the attention of such famous names as Pete Seeger and Harry Belafonte, pop groups such as Boney M, and scores of African artists including Angelique Kidjo and the Mahotella Queens. It's even covered by Djeli Moussa Diawara and Bob Brozman on their recent Ocean Blues CD.Fadhili William, however, was far more than a one hit wonder. Akrowa Dance Ensemble, Drumming in Kokrobite Ghana This is a video of a rehearsal of the Akrowa Dance Ensemble based in Kokrobite, outside of Accra Ghana. The group has about 10 drummers and several dancers, three of whom were practicing their moves along with the group. Cultural dancing often involves playing out a story. Toward the end of the video, there is an informal interview with Okoe Ardyfio, the founder of Akrowa Dance Ensemble. He has studied, traveled with, and currently works with Mustapha Tettey Addy, the renowned Ghanaian drummer and founder of the Academy of African Music and Arts (AAMA). In addition to leading Akrowa and traveling around the world performing, Okoe also teaches drumming and cultural dancing.
