  • Dawkins: Did Religion Have an Evolutionary Value? Complete video at: fora.tv Richard Dawkins argues that humanity's historical predisposition towards religion and supernatural beliefs may have held an evolutionary utility. "The rule of thumb: 'Believe whatever your parents tell you,' quite clearly could have survival value," says Dawkins. ----- He's the King of All the Atheists, and now Richard Dawkins is hammering home what he sees as his key argument against the existence of God. In his book, The Greatest Show on Earth, Dawkins aims to put the theory of evolution in a factually unassailable position. Here, at Adelaide Writers' Week in 2010, he goes through his book chapter by chapter, and in doing so attempts to convince his audience of the absolute veracity of Darwin's theories. - Australian Broadcasting Corporation Richard Dawkins is a world-renowned evolutionary biologist and author. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and, until recently, held the Charles Simonyi Chair of Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. • Stone Age Minds: A conversation with evolutionary psychologists Leda Cosmides and John Tooby Based at the Center for Evolutionary Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Leda Cosmides and John Tooby are two pioneers and leading lights in the field of evolutionary psychology. This multidisciplinary approach seeks to develop a better understanding of human nature by taking seriously the idea that our brains evolved to solve a variety of adaptive problems routinely faced by our hunter-gatherer ancestors. While our "stone age minds" have programs that are very good at things like detecting lies, attracting mates and avoiding predators, they are in many ways ill equipped for the kind of complex market-based society that we live in today. The lens of evolutionary psychology, for example, provides insights into why so many people in industrialized countries are overweight and sympathetic to socialist ideas. Reason.tv's Paul Feine sat down with Cosmides and Tooby to learn more about evolutionary psychology, the history of the field, and the implications for our society. Approximately 10 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine; shot by Alex Manning and Hawk Jensen; edited by Paul Feine and Alex Manning. For an extended version of this interview, go to www.reason.tv . Then we consider games that involve aggressive (Hawk) and passive (Dove) strategies, finding that sometimes, evolutionary populations are mixed. We discuss how such games can help us to predict how behavior might vary across settings. Finally, we consider a game in which there is no evolutionary stable population and discuss an example from nature. • Creating the Future: Evolutionary Enlightenment in Action This 12-minute feature video is an inside look at Evolutionary Enlightenment in action—through Andrew Cohen's own words and in the accounts of those who are participating with him in a living laboratory for conscious evolution. In November 2005, Andrew declared a "monumental shift" in his teaching work, which marked the emergence of a higher collective consciousness: "Many of my students have finally started to directly experience and express the very essence of what this teaching points to — a goal that until now I've seen only in the eye of my own mind and in rare, temporary bursts of intersubjective enlightened consciousness." Now, in this multidimensional documentary, you'll get a glimpse of what's occurring at the cutting edge of Andrew's teachings of Evolutionary Enlightenment. You'll hear people describing their experience of the authentic self which, infused with its own intelligence, insight, and directionality, may even be revealing the way to a higher order of human development . . .

The stimulus packages have certainly given the retail spending figures a boost, up 1% in May after a 0.3% increase in April and a 2.2% increase in March. But just what did you buy? Geoffrey Miller is an evolutionary psychologist and says it was probably something which was a waste of time, energy and money. He argues that too many of our consumer choices are prompted by the desire not to feel good so much as to look good, in an effort to display our superior intelligence, personality and evolutionary fitness to those around us.

  • Karl Sims - Evolved Virtual Creatures, Evolution Simulation, 1994 This video shows results from a research project involving simulated Darwinian evolutions of virtual block creatures. A population of several hundred creatures is created within a supercomputer, and each creature is tested for their ability to perform a given task, such the ability to swim in a simulated water environment. Those that are most successful survive, and their virtual genes containing coded instructions for their growth, are copied, combined, and mutated to make offspring for a new population. The new creatures are again tested, and some may be improvements on their parents. As this cycle of variation and selection continues, creatures with more and more successful behaviors can emerge.
