SAGE - Semi Automatic Ground Environment - Part 1/2 *** THIS FILM WAS MADE MY THE US GOVERNMENT AND IS PUBLIC DOMAIN *** SAGE, the Semi Automatic Ground Environment, was an automated control system used by NORAD for collecting, tracking and intercepting enemy bomber aircraft from the late 1950s into the 1980s. In later versions, the system could automatically direct aircraft to an interception by sending commands directly to the aircraft's autopilot. By the time it was fully operational the Soviet bomber threat had been replaced by the Soviet missile threat, for which SAGE was entirely inadequate. Nevertheless, SAGE was tremendously important; it led to huge advances in online systems and interactive computing, real-time computing, and data communications using modems. It is generally considered to be one of the most advanced and successful large computer systems ever developed. IBM's role in SAGE (the design and manufacture of the AN/FSQ-7 computer, a vacuum tube computer with ferrite core memory based on the never-built Whirlwind II) was an important factor leading to IBM's domination of the computer industry. Background Prior to the introduction of SAGE, the task of intercepting bombers was becoming increasingly difficult. Honda's New Enviro-Car ANCHOR: Honda has unveiled FCX Clarity, a slick, street wise, and environmentally friendly car. The sporty sedan came off the production line in Japan on June 16. It makes its debut at the July G8 summit in Hokkaido. Let's have a look. STORY: Fuel-cell vehicles are widely considered the ultimate longer-term alternative to today's conventional cars. They run on an inexhaustible and cheaper source of fuel -- hydrogen. They have no harmful tail-pipe emissions, and don't compromise driving performance. The main problems to become more common are a lack of fuelling stations and the high cost of development. The vehicle, which uses a lithium-ion battery, can run 620 km on a single fuelling. It has a top speed of 160 km per hour. The FCX Clarity will be sold through a newly established fuel-cell vehicle dealership group in the US from July. In Japan, sales are set to start in autumn. [Sachito Fujimoto, Honda's Senior Chief Engineer]: "We hope to have the production capacity within at least ten years to produce this car at under 10 million yen ($94000 US dollars). Therefore,I think you and I can look forward to waking up one day in the next ten years and stepping into this very car in the morning." While only two cars will be available for the leaders' summit to ride,the automaker is targeting lease sales of about 200 FCX Clarity cars in the first three years in both Japan and the United States.
