- Sycamore Vineyards and Biodynamics - Napa Valley The name biodynamics might be a term you recognize or maybe not. Strictly speaking, biodynamics is an agricultural process that places first emphasis on the soil as a living organism. Possibly one of the least understood and/or controversial wine practices in present day enology, the term is derived from Dr. Rudolf Steiners spiritual beliefs and philosophical teachings. These beliefs stress the merits of using organic methods to maintain the health of land that is producing crops, and the practice is steadily gaining a foothold in current-day winegrowing practices throughout the world. Join us as we hear from biodynamic consultant Philippe Armenier, and John Bryan, owner of Napa Valleys Sycamore Vineyards, about what the process has done for this winegrower for Freemark Abbey winery. - The Champagne of Dom Pérignon On our visit to Champagne, we had the opportunity to talk again with Richard Geoffroy, the Chef de Cave of Dom Pérignon, to get his perspective on the 2007 harvest - which was literally in progress during our visit. Richard Geoffroy has been the cellar master for Dom Pérignon for over a decade. Although he has a medical degree from the University of Reims, he never entered private practice, preferring instead to get an additional degree in enology and return to the roots of his family - winemaking. - MU Opens Experimental Winery (University of Missouri) The University of Missouri has established an experimental winery to test grape varieties and growing practices in Missouri. Our goal is to provide information on varieties to grow and cultural practices that will enhance efficiency and profitability for the industry, said Keith Striegler, director of the Institute for Continental Climate Viticulture and Enology. There are now 92 wineries in Missouri generating economic development and activity, particularly related to tourism, he said. Our goal is to provide an economic engine to drive this rapidly growing industry. It is critical to make experimental wines to take the institutes viticulture experiments all the way through the winemaking processes, Striegler said. These experimental wines will undergo chemical and sensory ***ysis as well as tasting by industry professionals. Grape varieties and cultural practices are tested for adaptation to Missouri growing conditions. Unlike many of the most well-known winemaking regions, Missouri has a continental rather than a Mediterranean climate. This means varieties must be able to endure cold winters, hot summers, heavy rain and drought. Certain varieties can survive, grow and produce fruit, but dont make good wine, he said. Providing information on which varieties perform best in Missouri from the vineyard to the cellar is important. The winery will provide hands-on training for students who want to include enology or viticulture as a track. Missouri wineries have had to hire ...
