  • Building a JavaScript-Based Game Engine for the Web Google Tech Talk June 11, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Paul Bakaus. There are many professional game engines out there for consoles, PCs, and mobile handhelds. However, there is one big empty gap, even in 2010: Not a single game engine targets desktop and mobile browsers natively without the use of plugins. In this session, Paul will talk about the challenges of building a pure browser-based gaming engine, how web programming concepts like event-driven architecture need to be considered, and what it means to fully utilize the open web stack—HTML5, client- and server-side JavaScript, external Stylesheets, server-side JavaScript and, of course, Canvas—to squeeze every millisecond of rendering time. We will go into the details of our own upcoming Aves Engine for isometric real-time games and will give you a very solid idea of what needs to be done to build graphically rich, real-time, full featured games for the web. Paul Bakaus is the CTO of the Germany-based startup Dextrose AG, and his corporate work mostly focuses on UX, UI and tricky JavaScript challenges. He is best known for creating jQuery UI, the popular official UI framework for jQuery, where he was the driving force behind many of its plugins.

  • Southwest Airlines Engine Washing Southwest Airlines Co. has signed a multiyear agreement to use an environmentally friendly engine-washing system in an effort to save on fuel and cut carbon emissions. The Dallas-based carrier is using the EcoPower system offered by East Hartford, Conn.-based flight technology firm Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partners. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but Pratt & Whitney said Southwest's annual fuel-cost savings could exceed $20 million. The airline also stands to cut 135 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually as a result. The arrangement with Pratt & Whitney comes as Southwest, along with the rest of the airline industry, faces record-high fuel prices that have led many to trim capacity and levy fees on travelers. Southwest in the first quarter reported a 63 percent drop in profit to $34 million, partially driven by a 34 percent hike in fuel and oil costs compared with the same period of 2007. Southwest said it is performing regular washes at airports in Orlando, Fla., and Oakland, Calif., where Pratt & Whitney has established new service centers. The EcoPower equipment uses a closed-loop system with atomized water to wash aircraft engines, avoiding contaminant runoff, Pratt & Whitney said. The patented system is considered more effective and faster than traditional engine-washing processes. Pratt & Whitney parent United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) employs more than 225000 worldwide and in 2007 recorded $4.22 billion in profit on $54.8 billion in ...

  • Ford 351 Windsor Small Block Engine - Water in Oil Mystery Behind the scenes of "Basic Engine Building" DVD A special internet only treat from the producers of the BoxWrench Series! Basic Engine Building DVD - Behind the Scenes: Small Block Ford 351 Windsor Diagnosis We gonna show you some never before seen footage from the filthy Ford 351W we pulled out of a boat. BoxWrench Director Brent Bye recaps the story of discovering the engines problem and what ensued as the tear down process proceeded. Basically salt water was leaking into a cylinder head thru some hidden steel water plugs that only these small block 351 W motors have. Being a marine engine they needed to be replaced with rust proof brass plugs. After running for 5 years the water eroded holes straight thru them. Water pressurized from the water pump was squirting into the cylinder heads right onto the rocker arms, valves and valve springs, ultimately all the way down to the oil pan and crankcase. It all made out for a surprising tear down. This particular Ford 351 Windsor marine motor was fully rebuild on camera in the "Basic Engine Building" DVD. Even a catastrophic blown engine like this can be rebuilt with the proper knowledge and tools. The BoxWrench Series is designed to give you that knowledge and let you have fun with it. • GE90-115B Gas Turbine Jet Engine Testing & Evaluation GE90-115B Gas Turbine Jet Engine Testing and Evaluation I takes a lot of money and time to test as thoroughly as the FAA, military, and GE require. More money and time and lives are saved by finding most problems before they become much larger. Some claim US gas turbine aircraft engines can't take turbulence or odd angles of attack. The claim is clearly false, if you note the shot of the crosswind testing fans. The crosswind fans can simulate hurricane winds at any angle. The fan and the engine can be pivoted to simulate any angle. Typically it is some former soviet block people that make those claims. They think just because they carelessly showboat fighters at air shows doing extreme AOA, that they are the only ones that can do so. The fact is that we don't make a habit of showboating at air shows because it is risky. The former soviet block has crashed a lot of fighters showboating extreme AOAs. The fact is any time you move a gas turbine with reverse airflow your risk of a flameout increases dramatically. The exhaust can recirculate back into the intake the result can be a backfire or flameout or just reduced power; all can be fatal if you are flying with no margin of error at an air show. Normally; US pilots are told to avoid doing things that can cause cavitation or recirculation, particularly wile airborne. They are tested at higher altitude in remote areas to give a good chance of recovery, and restart, and if nothing else ejection. There are some exceptions ...
  • Charles Babbage and his Difference Engine #2 [Recorded: April 2008] Charles Babbage (1791-1871), computer pioneer, designed the first automatic computing engines. He invented computers but failed to build them. The first complete Babbage Engine was completed in London in 2002, 153 years after it was designed. Difference Engine No. 2, built faithfully to the original drawings, consists of 8000 parts, weighs five tons, and measures 11 feet long. OVERVIEW - In London, during the summer of 1821, Charles Babbage, inventor and mathematician, is poring over a set of astronomical tables calculated by hand. Finding error after error he finally exclaims 'I wish to God these calculations had been executed by steam'. His appeal to machinery, in one of the most resonant utterances of the 19th century, was the start of a new era of automatic computation. It was not only the grindingly tedious labor of verifying a sea of figures that exasperated Babbage, but their daunting unreliability. Engineering, astronomy, construction, finance, banking and insurance depended on printed tables for calculation. Ships navigating by the stars relied on printed tables to find their position at sea. The stakes were high. Capital and life were thought to be at risk. Babbage embarked on an ambitious venture to design and build mechanical calculating engines to eliminate the risk of human error in the production of printed tables. The 'unerring certainty of machinery' would solve the problem of human fallibility. His work on the engines led him from ...

  • Homemade Stirling Engine A Stirling engine is a heat engine operating by cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas, the working fluid, at different temperature levels such that there is a net conversion of heat energy to mechanical work. Like the steam engine, the Stirling engine is traditionally classified as an external combustion engine, as all heat transfers to and from the working fluid take place through the engine wall. This contrasts with an internal combustion engine where heat input is by combustion of a fuel within the body of the working fluid. Unlike a steam engine's (or more generally a Rankine cycle engine's) usage of a working fluid in both its liquid and gaseous phases, the Stirling engine encloses a fixed quantity of permanently gaseous fluid such as air. Typical of heat engines, the general cycle consists of compressing cool gas, heating the gas, expanding the hot gas, and finally cooling the gas before repeating the cycle. The efficiency of the process is narrowly restricted by the efficiency of the Carnot cycle, which depends on the temperature difference between the hot and cold reservoir. Originally conceived in 1816 as an industrial prime mover to rival the steam engine, its practical use was largely confined to low-power domestic applications for over a century. The Stirling engine is noted for its high efficiency compared to steam engines, quiet operation, and the ease with which it can use almost any heat source. This compatibility with alternative and ...
