In this process, two sperm from the pollen tube eject into the embryonic sac, where one of the sperm unites with the egg, and the other sperm unites with the central cell of the sac. From this, a zygote and an endosperm mother cell are created. Once double fertilization has occurred, the ovules develop into seeds, and the ovary starts to ripen into the pericarp, or the flesh of the fruit. As the ovary continues to ripen, the petals, stamens, and style of the flower fall off and the fruit is what remains.

Through the hydrolysis process of starch, the enzymes provide nourishment for the embryo and it eventually outgrows the seed coat, sprouting into a wonderful plant. Worldwide, over 70% of the wheat supply is used for food, and it is the major dietary cereal in all regions except Asia and China (Table 2). Consumption levels are highest in western Asia (Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, and Turkey) and North Africa (Algeria and Tunisia), where supplies for food use exceed 500 g day1 per person. Although other species are grown in some regions, the major species are common or bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) and durum wheat (Triticum durum). Of these two species, common wheat accounts for about 95% of total production. Common wheat can be grown across widely diverse geographical regions including subtropical, warm temperate, and cool temperate climates, where it can withstand frosts. There is an extensive range of genotypes, varying in agronomic adaptability and grain quality. Quality is usually assessed in terms of suitability for milling and baking. The whole grain comprises about 82% endosperm and 18% bran. The aim of milling white flour is to separate the starchy endosperm from the darker coarser bran. Wheat bran is used as a fiber source in some foodstuffs including ready-to-eat cereals.   • NS 201/ 2008 - Lab 6 (Baum) During the experiment we set out to determine the concentration of lipids, proteins and starches in kidney, pea, castor, and corn seeds. Using Sudan Red IV we determined the concentration of lipids, PFA to reveal the proteins and IKI to expose the starches. We hypothesized that there would be the largest concentration of red die in the embryo of the seeds because the embryo holds the largest amount of lipids. The greatest amount of blue/ green die will be in the endosperm representing a large amount of protein where the seeds germinate. We believe that the concentration of starches will be in the embryo because the embryo needs nourishment to encourage growth. Once injecting the dies into the seeds we learned that we were correct in our hypothesis that lipids are concentrated in the embryo and proteins are greatest in the endosperm. We were incorrect in our belief that starches were the most present in the embryo. They were actually the most exposed in the area surrounding the embryo, available to provide nutrients. We also learned about the structure of the seed and the various layers, which store specific nutrients. In conclusion we found that seeds are self-sufficient products of evolution. We have deduced that the bio-molecules in the seed are necessary to make life and allow the seed to function with all the proper nutrients. Monosaccharides are the monomers of disaccharides. Disaccharides are thus made up of two monosaccharides. Disaccharides are readily soluble in water (like monosaccharides) and are built by dehydration synthesis (Lab Book, pg. 108). Polysaccharides and disaccharides are broken down by hydrolysis reactions. Seeds are made up of 4 main layers. These are: the seed coat, the Aleurone layer, the endosperm, and the embryo. I want to go back a little bit and explain where the name Golden Rice came from. Ingo first presented his results during the last meeting of the Rockefeller Foundations Rice Biotechnology Network held in Phuket, Thailand, in September 1999. It was one of several important scientific breakthroughs that were presented at that meeting. Following the meeting, Bob Herdt, John OToole, and I stayed on in Bangkok. John was based in Bangkok and we needed to spend a couple of days figuring out the next phases of the work that he was going to be doing from that office. Angiosperm seeds are produced and packaged in botanical structures called fruits which develop from the "female" pistils of flowers. Immature seeds (called ovules) each contain a minute, single-celled egg enclosed within a 7-celled embryo sac. The haploid (1n) egg is fertilized by a haploid (1n) sperm resulting in a diploid (2n) zygote that divides by mitosis into a minute, multicellular embryo within the developing seed. A second sperm unites with 2 haploid polar nuclei inside a binucleate cell called the endosperm mother cell which divides into a mass of nutritive tissue inside the seed. In most seeds the embryo is embedded in this endosperm tissue which provides sustenance to the embryo during germination. In exalbuminous seeds (found in many plants such as the legumes), the endosperm tissue is already absorbed by the time you examine a mature seed within the pod, and the 2 white fleshy halves in the seed are really the cotyledons (components of the embryo). The 2 sperm involved in the double fertilization process originated within the pollen tube that penetrated the embryo sac.
