  • Jeff Furman: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: The Impact of Institutions on Cumulative Research. While cumulative knowledge production is central to growth, little empirical research investigates how institutions shape whether existing knowledge can be exploited to create new knowledge. This paper assesses the impact of a specific institution, a biological resource center, whose objective is to certify and disseminate knowledge. We disentangle the marginal impact of this institution on cumulative research from the impact of selection, in which the most important discoveries are endogenously linked to research-enhancing institutions. Exploiting exogenous shifts of biomaterials across institutional settings and employing a differences-in-differences approach, we find that effective institutions amplify the cumulative impact of individual scientific discoveries.

Aspirin also has an antiplatelet effect by inhibiting the production of thromboxane, which under normal circumstances binds platelet molecules together to create a patch over damaged walls of blood vessels. Because the platelet patch can become too large and also block blood flow, locally and downstream, aspirin is also used long-term, at low doses, to help prevent heart attacks, strokes, and blood clot formation in people at high risk for developing blood clots. It has also been established that low doses of aspirin may be given immediately after a heart attack to reduce the risk of another heart attack or of the death of cardiac tissue. He begins by reviewing some foundational ideas, including Adam Smith's invisible hand, Marxist historicism, Malthusian economics, and Schumpeter's notion of creative destruction. Professor Rae also reviews the importance to capitalism of the modern nation state, which guarantees property rights and contracts, and recalls Hernando de Soto's theories about the importance of formal property rights for developing countries. These, in turn, are determined by the economy's factor endowments at that stage. This lecture will discuss the existence on an endogenously determined optimal composition of various financial arrangements, that is, optimal financial structure, for an economy at different stages of development.

Around the globe, chemicals remaining after wastewater treatment end up in oceans and groundwater with deleterious effects to wildlife and humans alike. Cal State Long Beach science professors Kevin Kelley and Stephen Mezyk are studying these effects and ways to remove such chemicals and present their finding in this lecture.

  • 25. The Leverage Cycle and the Subprime Mortgage Crisis Financial Theory (ECON 251) Standard financial theory left us woefully unprepared for the financial crisis of 2007-09. Something is missing in the theory. In the majority of loans the borrower must agree on an interest rate and also on how much collateral he will put up to guarantee repayment. The standard theory presented in all the textbooks ignores collateral. The next two lectures introduce a theory of the Leverage Cycle, in which default and collateral are endogenously determined. The main implication of the theory is that when collateral requirements get looser and leverage increases, asset prices rise, but then when collateral requirements get tougher and leverage decreases, asset prices fall. This stands in stark contrast to the fundamental value theory of asset pricing we taught so far.   • Taft Lecture, Philosophy: Dr William Bechtel 4/8 Only recently have philosophers of science caught up with biology and psychology in recognizing that explanation often involves specifying a mechanism responsible for a phenomenon rather than subsuming the phenomenon under a law. But the accounts of mechanistic explanation advanced often neglect the dynamics exhibited by complexly organized mechanisms. Dynamical systems theory offers tools for describing dynamical behavior but downplays the importance of identifying the parts and operations of the mechanism producing that behavior. I argue that there is an important class of explanations dynamic mechanistic explanations in which the tools of dynamical systems ***ysis and mechanistic science are coordinated. In this talk I show how this provides a framework for understanding endogenously active brains and their contribution to cognition. This contrasts with the reactive approach that has long been dominant in psychology and neuroscience, as reflected in mechanistic models that downplay dynamics and, specifically, neglect endogenously generated dynamics. I review some of the evidence for endogenous activity in brains and consider the implications not only for understanding cognition but also for accounts of explanation offered by philosophers of science. ............................................................................................................................................   • Cast of 1000 Proteins Shines in Movies of Cancer Cells From paper "Dynamic Proteomics of Individual Cancer Cells in Response to a Drug," AA Cohen et al. and U. Alon, Science, Published Online November 20, 2008, DOI: 10.1126/science.1160165. Presents dynamics and variability of the protein response of human cancer cells to a chemotherapy drug, camptothecin. Dynamic-proteomics approach measuring the levels and locations of nearly 1000 different endogenously tagged proteins in individual living cells at high temporal resolution is presented. All cells show rapid translocation of proteins specific to the drug mechanism, including the drug target (topoisomerase-1), and slower, wide-ranging temporal waves of protein degradation and accumulation. However, the cells differ in the behavior of a subset of proteins. The video and ***ysis opens the way to understanding molecular responses to drugs in individual cells.
  • Richard Palmiter: 2011 Allen Institute for Brain Science Symposium Richard Palmiter, University of Washington; Howard Hughes Medical Institute, "Deciphering a neural circuit controlling anorexia in the mouse" Dr. Palmiter, one of the pioneers of transgenic mice technology, developed several important techniques that have led to the creation of animal models of the brain in which the majority of neuroscience research is currently conducted. Focusing on the circuits and molecular regulators that drive anorexia, Dr. Palmiter identified particular alterations in expression and circuitry of Agouti-related Peptide (AgRP), which is uniquely expressed in a particular area of the hypothalamus, the arcuate nucleus. Experimental evidence shows that selectively activating AgRP neurons induces hunger or feeding, and inhibiting these neurons causes starvation or refusal to feed in mice. Further, Dr. Palmiter presented particular pathways in which AgRP neurons are critical, downstream effects of which endogenously cause activation or inhibition to produce the aforementioned effects. Dr. Palmiter is a world leader in dissecting the circuits of physiological behaviors, and his work can be generalized to the study of other long-range circuits in the brain.
