  • Exocrine Gland and Endocrine Glands Check us out at Exocrine glands are glands that secrete their products (excluding hormones and other chemical messengers) into ducts (duct glands) which lead directly into the external environment. They are the counterparts to endocrine glands, which secrete their products (hormones) directly into the bloodstream (ductless glands) or release hormones (paracrines) that affect only target cells nearby the release site. Exocrine glands contain a glandular portion and a duct portion, the structures of which can be used to classify the gland. •The duct portion may be branched (called compound) or unbranched (called simple). •The glandular portion may be tubular, acinar, or may be a mix of the two (called tubuloacinar). If the glandular portion branches, then the gland is called a branched gland. Endocrine glands are glands of the endocrine system that secrete their products, hormones, directly into the blood rather than through a duct. The main endocrine glands include the pituitary gland, pancreas, ovaries, testes, thyroid gland, and adrenal glands. The hypothalamus is a neuroendocrine organ. Other organs which are not so well known for their endocrine activity include the stomach, which produces such hormones as ghrelin. Local chemical messengers, not generally considered part of the endocrine system, include autocrines, which act on the cells that secrete them, and paracrines, which act on a different cell type nearby

  • Chapter 3 - What Are Endocrine Disruptors An endocrine disruptor is any compound that is capable of interacting with endocrine receptor cells in a body. The body mistakes it for the female hormone estrogen. Endocrine disruptors come in forms such as: detergents, shampoos, personal care products, fragrances, and so on. Many foods also have endocrine disrupting capabilities. An example is soy based baby formula. Many plastics that humans are exposed to every day contain the endocrine disruptor BPA (Bisphenol A plasticer). View to learn about what an endocrine disruptor is, and what products contain them. • Endocrine System Physiology.wmv This is an overview of endocrine system physiology. I completely forgot to mention, my apologies, that steroid hormones are also slower in eliciting a cellular response than peptide hormones. Steroid hormone responses include transcription and translation and then a physiologic response while peptide hormones activate inactive secondary messengers that interact with enzymes that are already within the cystol. Steroid hormones also tend to stay bound to their receptors longer than peptides which is another reason why they are slower to be cleared.

  • "Anatomy and Physiology", The Endocrine System, The Pancreas The Pancreas in one of the components of the Endocrine System. The Pancreas produces pancrease, which serves a role in digestion. In addition, the Pancreas's "Islets of Langerhans" produce Insulin. Insulin is essential for simple sugars to enter into the cells of the body, such that it can be used as energy in cellular metabolism. Some individuals are born with Type I Diabetes. In Type I Diabetes, the "Islets of Langerhans" are dysfunctional, and unable to produce any significant amount of Insulin on a daily basis. In Type II Diabetes, there is an imbalance between Insulin supplied daily by the "Islets of Langerhans", and the metabolic needs of the individual. A major cause of Type II Diabetes is Obesity. There are also individuals who are genetically pre-disposed to Type II Diabetes, and in general individuals are at higher risk of Type II Diabetes as they get older (Adult Onset Diabetes). There are some special conditions (Pregnancy/Acute Illness), that can result in an individual becoming Diabetic. For some of these individuals the Diabetes is only temporary, but for others, it is longterm. The best strategy to minimize your chances of becoming a Type II Diabetic is to maintain your ideal weight, eat a balanced diet, and exercise on a daily basis. This way the Insulin produced by your pancreas is more likely to be able to meet the daily metabolic needs of your body.

  • The Human Endocrine System Check us out at Endocrine system is a system of glands, each of which secretes a type of hormone into the bloodstream to regulate the body. The endocrine system is an information signal system like the nervous system. Hormones regulate many functions of an organism, including mood, growth and development, tissue function, and metabolism. The field of study that deals with disorders of endocrine glands is endocrinology, a branch of internal medicine. The endocrine system is made up of a series of ductless glands that produce chemicals called hormones. A number of glands that signal each other in sequence is usually referred to as an axis, for example, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Typical endocrine glands are the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands. Features of endocrine glands are, in general, their ductless nature, their vascularity, and usually the presence of intracellular vacuoles or granules storing their hormones. In contrast, exocrine glands, such as salivary glands, sweat glands, and glands within the gastrointestinal tract, tend to be much less vascular and have ducts or a hollow lumen. In addition to the specialised endocrine organs mentioned above, many other organs that are part of other body systems, such as the kidney, liver, heart and gonads, have secondary endocrine functions. For example the kidney secretes endocrine hormones such as erythropoietin and renin

  • The Endocrine Glands The Endocrine Glands Hormones maintain the equilibrium of the body's chemistry and regulate growth and development. They are produced by the system of endocrine glands, which secrete them directly into the bloodstream for distribution throughout the body. There are nine endocrine glands throughout the body. The anterior pituitary gland produces thyroid-stimulating hormone or TSH, adrenocortico trophic hormone or ACTH, follicle-stimulating hormone or FSH, luteinizing hormone or LH, prolactin and growth hormone or GH . The posterior pituitary gland produces oxytocin, which helps induce labor and causes milk release, and antidiuretic hormone or ADH, which promotes water retention by the kidneys. The thyroid gland produces triiodothyronine and thyroxine, which increase metabolic rate. The Parathyroid glands produce parathormone or PTH, which raises the level of calcium in the blood. The pancreas produces insulin, which decreases blood sugar levels, and glucagon, which increases blood sugar levels. The adrenal cortex produces glucocorticoids, affecting protein and carbohydrate metabolism, mineralorcorticoids, regulating body fluid concentration, and *** hormones. The adrenal medulla produces adrenaline and noradrenaline, which prepare the body for "fight or flight". The testes produce testosterone, which maintains the male secondary ***ual characteristics. The ovaries produce progesterone, which help to prepare the uterus for pregnancy, together with estrogen, which also ...
