MonetDB/X100: a (very) fast column-store Google Tech Talks January, 15 2008 ABSTRACT MonetDB/X100 is a second-generation column-store prototyped at CWI, targeted at ***ysis-heavy data management tasks such as data warehousing and information retrieval. In this overview talk I will outline the research challenges, novel techniques and results from this project. The ideal is to close the existing performance gap between hand-coded applicationas and database systems using architecture-conscious techniques, and by carefully exploiting the bandwith strengs of modern hardware (and avoiding its latency weaknesses). The novel techniques presented encompass expressing relational operators as vector operations, lightweight compression on the border between CPU cache and RAM, sequential-access optimized database design and I/O bandwidth sharing. Top One Hundred VGM 100-76 this list was made off and on during the summer, it isn't perfect, not even by my own standards, but I am satisfied with it, and it is my hope you are too ^^. Many believe that the city was planned to be shaped like a puma. This talk integrates Dave Snowden's Cynefin Framework with Gunderson and Holling's Cycle of Adaptive Change. This adds the time dimension to Snowden's Framework and adds a strategic knowledge dimension to the Cycle of Adaptive Change. This provides queues for knowledge and action during different kinds of transition, which provides a theory-driven evidence base for strategic action during times of dynamics uncertainty.
