- ECE DAY '09: Honor Thesis Emily Hostage Part 2 Senior Honors Thesis Muscular Force Control Thesis Presenter: Emily Hostage The objective of this study is to produce a conceptual model of the human control system governing the recruitment of motor units based on the observed relationship between their firing rates and recruitment thresholds in voluntary physical activity. For this purpose, six healthy human subjects of comparable age and physical fitness were selected to perform isometric contractions of the vastus lateralis (VL), first dorsal interosseus (FDI), and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles at various force levels relative to their maximum voluntary capabilities. Electromyographic (EMG) data was collected during the contractions with surface array probes and ***yzed using a decomposition algorithm to identify the firings of the individual motor units engaged during the muscle contraction. From these decomposed firings the recruitment thresholds, initial firing rates, and mean firing rates of the active motor units were calculated and ***yzed to produce an empirical model of the control system. The data strongly suggest a hierarchical relationship between the recruitment thresholds and firing rates which remains constant relative to the level of force. This relationship is slightly variable between subjects and unique to each muscle. These results support the theory that a basic control scheme is encoded in the physical properties of a muscle which responds consistently to a single excitatory input from the ...

July 15, 2011 doi: 10.1242/jeb.052829 Summary Wing-assisted incline running (WAIR) in birds combines the use of the wings and hindlimbs to ascend otherwise insurmountable obstacles. It is a means of escape in precocial birds before they are able to fly, and it is used by a variety of juvenile and adult birds as an alternative to flight for exploiting complex three-dimensional environments at the interface of the ground and air. WAIR and controlled flapping descent (CFD) are the bases of the ontogenetic-transitional wing hypothesis, wherein WAIR and CFD are proposed to be extant biomechanical ***ogs for incremental adaptive stages in the evolutionary origin of flight. A primary assumption of the hypothesis is that work and power requirements from the primary downstroke muscle, the pectoralis, incrementally increase from shallow- to steep-angled terrestrial locomotion, and between terrestrial and aerial locomotion. To test this assumption, we measured in vivo force, electromyographic (EMG) activity and length change in the pectoralis of pigeons (Columba livia) as the birds engaged in shallow and steep WAIR (65 and 85 deg, respectively) and in three modes of slow flight immediately following take-off: ascending at 80 deg, level ...

- The most effective abdominal exercise - Improved! This is so simple and so effective for conditioning and strengthening your mid section, that you'd be remiss in not adding this to your routine. Or ... if you don't have a routine, this can be the second thing you do after waking up (the first, would be to go to the bathroom) (See more at: ) Why this exercise is considered the "most effective." While doing electromyographic testing, (a test that hooks up electrodes to the skin or where needle sensors are inserted directly into the muscle) it was found that this exercise was able to show more activity in most of the muscles of the midsection that any other exercise. One key factor! The same study also reveled something that no other test expressed ... safety to the low back. Most "effective" abdominal exercises tend to wreck the low back, but no one seems to mention it. I praise this study for hooking up the same sensors to the muscles surrounding the lower spine, thus exposing this coveted little secret. Speaking of "secrets," this exercise is clearly depicted in the book, "Secrets of the Game, What Superstar Athletes Can Teach You about Health, Peak Performance and Getting Results" Yet, while at the Miami Dolphin training facility last week, I observed a slight addition to this exercise, a barbell! Weighted bar, abdominal crunch Why does this sound like something to eat? I must be hungry since "bar" and "crunch" appear to be the appetite triggers. Anyway, holding a bar up with your arms extended can ...

On each finger there is a pressure sensor with which information about contact with an object and the amount of force the finger is applying is obtained. - EMG Test EMG (Electromyography) Test Video is a medical educational video explaining the EMG test in details. EMG Laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility that specializes in sophisticated electrodiagnostic testing of the nerves and muscles. Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction tests are performed in order to evaluate the condition of nerves and muscles. These tests make use of computerized equipment, which allow calculations of the rate at which nerves conduct electrical impulses. In addition, they assess whether or not muscles may have had some interruption in their nerve supply, or if there is any damage to the muscles. This test provides information about a variety of disorders including injured nerve roots, damaged nerve and muscle disorders. The detailed information gathered, and comprehensive ***ysis that follows, is critical to understanding the neuromuscular condition, which in turn assists in selecting the most effective treatment plan.
- Wireless EMG controlled RC Car A person hooked up to four different electrode pairs which collect electromyographic(EMG) data and is used to operate a wireless RC Car. Electromyography is the study of the ionic shift from muscle activity. The shift in the ionic current causes a small voltage change when making a muscle. The EMGs are collected by a BioRadio150 (made by Clevemed). Typical electrodes are used (same as that ambulance corps use for EKGs). The data is processed and then sent by RF to custom RC car. This was a senior design project (P08027) at RIT.

- ECE Day '08 - Kuznetsov Thesis Electromyographic (EMG) signals are electrical signals that originate in the brain and control the force generating capacity and movements of muscles. These signals consist of trains of superimposed electric pulses known as Motor Unit Action Potentials (MUAPs). Detailed ***ysis of the behavior of the MUAP can provide improved understanding of how the muscle is controlled during both normal and dysfunctional states. A surface sensor, which consists of an array of electrodes that are placed on the skin above the muscle, is being developed. This project developed hardware and software tools and techniques in order to improve the design of these sensors by providing a means to study the effect of various sensor parameters, such the dimensions and geometrical arrangement of electrodes on the ability of the sensor to acquire sEMG signals with distinguishable MUAPs. The new system was used to investigate relationship between the inter-electrode spacing of a surface sensor and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the acquired signals on the distinguishability of MUAPs in the sEMG signals. The signals were acquired from contractions of the First Dorsal Interosseous (FDI) muscle of the hand and the Vastus Lateralis (VL) muscle of the leg using a surface sensor with three sets of inter-electrode spacings. Results showed that while the performance of the sensor on the FDI was not affected by either of the 2.5mm, 6 mm, and 10 mm inter- electrode spacings tested, the performance of the ...
