Electromyographic (EMG) data was collected during the contractions with surface array probes and ***yzed using a decomposition algorithm to identify the firings of the individual motor units engaged during the muscle contraction. From these decomposed firings the recruitment thresholds, initial firing rates, and mean firing rates of the active motor units were calculated and ***yzed to produce an empirical model of the control system. The data strongly suggest a hierarchical relationship between the recruitment thresholds and firing rates which remains constant relative to the level of force. These tests make use of computerized equipment, which allow calculations of the rate at which nerves conduct electrical impulses. In addition, they assess whether or not muscles may have had some interruption in their nerve supply, or if there is any damage to the muscles. This test provides information about a variety of disorders including injured nerve roots, damaged nerve and muscle disorders. The detailed information gathered, and comprehensive ***ysis that follows, is critical to understanding the neuromuscular condition, which in turn assists in selecting the most effective treatment plan.
  • Wireless EMG controlled RC Car A person hooked up to four different electrode pairs which collect electromyographic(EMG) data and is used to operate a wireless RC Car. Electromyography is the study of the ionic shift from muscle activity. The shift in the ionic current causes a small voltage change when making a muscle. The EMGs are collected by a BioRadio150 (made by Clevemed). Typical electrodes are used (same as that ambulance corps use for EKGs). The data is processed and then sent by RF to custom RC car. This was a senior design project (P08027) at RIT.

  • ECE Day '08 - Kuznetsov Thesis Electromyographic (EMG) signals are electrical signals that originate in the brain and control the force generating capacity and movements of muscles. These signals consist of trains of superimposed electric pulses known as Motor Unit Action Potentials (MUAPs). Detailed ***ysis of the behavior of the MUAP can provide improved understanding of how the muscle is controlled during both normal and dysfunctional states. A surface sensor, which consists of an array of electrodes that are placed on the skin above the muscle, is being developed. This project developed hardware and software tools and techniques in order to improve the design of these sensors by providing a means to study the effect of various sensor parameters, such the dimensions and geometrical arrangement of electrodes on the ability of the sensor to acquire sEMG signals with distinguishable MUAPs. The new system was used to investigate relationship between the inter-electrode spacing of a surface sensor and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the acquired signals on the distinguishability of MUAPs in the sEMG signals. The signals were acquired from contractions of the First Dorsal Interosseous (FDI) muscle of the hand and the Vastus Lateralis (VL) muscle of the leg using a surface sensor with three sets of inter-electrode spacings.
