  • Stand Up For Fact-Based Education Science & Reason on Facebook: Secular Coalition for America: Action Alert - Tell Your Representative to Stand Up For Fact-Based Education • --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • • • • --- Secular Coalition YouTube Channel • By now, you've probably heard about the Texas State Board of Education's moves to impose educational standards into its textbooks intended to indoctrinate Texas public school students with a telling of US history that is based in extremist religious ideology. You've probably also heard about some of the more jaw-dropping proposed changes to the curriculum, such as booting Thomas Jefferson off of a list of influential thinkers in place of explicitly religious figures, and the totally fabricated assertion that our system of government is based specifically on the laws of Moses. This comes from the same group of theocrats who famously fought to undermine evolution in science classes and delete from science textbooks the scientific consensus on the age of the universe because they conflict with the Bible. As terrible as this religious imposition is for Texas students, all Americans have reason to fear. Due to the size of the Texas textbook market (and because other highly populated states do not use statewide textbook contracts in the say way), the backward dictates of its theocratic school board effect textbooks used by public school ...

  • The Higher Education Bubble The Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism presents the Fall 2010 Pope Lecture: The Higher Education Bubble and What Comes Next Full Version: It is often said that a process that cannot go on forever, won't. Over the past few decades, college and graduate tuitions have climbed much faster than the rate of inflation and the growth of household income, with the difference being made up by debt taken on by students who assumed they'd have no trouble paying it off after graduation. • The KinKs "Education" In a deep dark jungle, long time ago Lived a lonesome caveman He was a solitary soul And he spent his playtime Chewing meat from bones. He didn't know how to talk much He only knew how to groan Then he lifted up his hands and reached to the sky Let out a yell and no one replied. Frustration and torment tore him inside Then he fell to the ground and he cried and he cried. But then education saved the day. He learned to speak and communicate Education saved the day. He thanked God for the friends he made. 'Cos everybody needs an education Everybody needs an education. Black skin, red skin, yellow or white, Everybody needs to read and write Everybody needs an education. Thank the day when that primitive man Learned to talk with his brothers And live off the land. He left his cave and he moved far away And he lived with his friends in a house that they'd made He learned to think and to work with his brain And he astounded his friends with all the knowledge he gained He wrote it down on a rock that he found And he showed all his friends and they passed it around And then education came that day. The day it came was a sacred day. Education came that day He thanked God for the friends he'd made. Well man built a boat and he learned how to sail And he traveled far and wide Then he looked up above saw the stars in the sky So he learned how to fly. Thanks to all the mathematicians And the inventors with their high IQs And the professors in their colleges Trying to feed me knowledge ...

  • A Review of Education Reports This Past Year This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from . In two thousand nine, Special English Web site users began posting comments about our stories on our Web site. The Education Reports have received many of those comments. We began the year in the middle of our Foreign Student Series. These were reports about how foreign students could attend a college or university in the United States. The report that received the most comments--seventy-three--told how to qualify for free training at an American community college. The next highest number of comments was forty-nine. They were about a report on services at American colleges that help foreign students adjust to studying in the United States. Close behind with forty-eight comments was a report about financial aid. Forty-seven comments followed a story about college student grade expectations. And forty-six people wrote in reaction to our guide to writing college papers. Other education stories included the deaths of college test preparation pioneer Stanley Kaplan and music educator Bess Lomax Hawes. We explained the work of school nurses. We had a report about what foreign exchange students thought about American high schools. We discussed the California digital textbook program as well as the use of digital textbooks in general. We talked to education experts about teaching handwriting, choosing a college, and publishing research in medical journals. And we looked at the job market for American ...
