- Carlson Orthodontics Podcast - January 2011 - Understanding X-Ray Dosimetry This is Part I of a three part series on dental and orthodontic x-rays. It is an excerpt from a 2010 lecture given by Dr. Sean K. Carlson at the North East Society of Orthodontists meeting in Montreal, Canada 2010. It covers some basics of x-ray dosimetry as they relate to common dental and orthodontic diagnostic procedures. It also covers the current recommendations by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). To ensure patient protection, the risks associated with dental x-rays should be minimized by all practitioners. This Podcast describes the risk relationships between everyday background radiation exposure, radiation exposure of common events like air travel, and radiation exposure from dental and orthodontic x-ray imaging (including 3-D CBCT x-rays). Viewers will be relieved to learn that radiation exposure in the dental office is minimal when compared with the common things we do everyday.

- Radiation Monitoring (ALARMS) A Location Aware Radiation Monitoring System (ALARMS) Minimizing radiation exposure of workers may soon be much easier when the system demonstrated by Q-Track and ORNL (Oak Ridge National Labs) is commercialized. By merging Q-Track's location data with radiation dosimetry, one will be able to map out and identify potentially dangerous levels of radiation. The radiation map will update immediately as workers with dosimeter/location tags move through the area. This radiation mapping provides a prompt indication of emerging problems and enables workers to avoid the radiation hazard reducing dose and making a safer work environment. Learn More: www.q-

- Dosimulation™ System Workers who understand how to use and interpret their personal radiation dosimeters can avoid health hazards and minimize costs for their employers. However, accurately simulating hazardous environments is a challenge. Q-Track answers this challenge with the Dosimulation™ Radiation Worker Training System. Using patented technology, the system automatically and instantaneously correlates a worker's actual location with a trainer-controlled, simulated-radiation environment. Directly, our training dosimeter displays the cumulative radiation exposure and detonates internal-alarms when radiation thresholds, regulated by the training instructor, are met. This accurately replicates the radiation-dosage alarms a worker receives when operating in a "hot" environment. Q-Track's Dosimulation™ System is also a process mapping tool allowing a trainer to review an exercise and empowering him to streamline any operation procedure proposals to minimize manpower and radiation exposure. The distinct precision and unprecedented adherence to realism of the Q-Track Dosimulation™ System make a "Practice-Like-You-Play" training experience an actuality. Learn More: www.q-

- The truth behind the moon landings part 4 Were they faked part 4 And there's another possible and far simpler explanation. Above is a scene of an Apollo landing, with the crosshairs in red for visibility. They would be invisible at that picture scale without the emphasis. Now let's examine a couple in detail. There's No Blast Crater If you visit the Web pages for the Apollo missions, it's easy to find photographs specifically showing the LEM engine nozzle and the ground beneath. Now why would NASA deliberately take pictures that failed to show a blast crater? Because there is no fluffy, easily mobilized dust on the Moon. There never was, except in the imaginations of a few fiction science writers. Certainly since the Surveyor missions of the late 1960's, it was known for certain that the Moon's surface was fairly firm, well-packed material. Pictures of the blast effects would be useful from both an engineering and scientific standpoint, but nobody was surprised by the absence of a blast crater. The film shows an artist's (Norman Rockwell's) conception with a blast crater visible under the LEM, but a public relations artist is not a scientist. Dust on the Moon A lot of the confusion about lunar dust seems to arise from people thinking of household dust. Household dust is mostly organic (a lot of it is you - hair and dead skin). It has a low density and floats easily in the air. Lunar dust is powdered rock, much higher in density and with no air to support it. There are no dust bunnies on the moon. Kick any dry ...
