  • Scotland's Fabled Distilleries No trip to Scotland would be complete without a visit to a distillery. The Glen Ord distillery was founded in 1828 in the Muir of Ord. There were local farms that could provide the barley needed to make whiskey. Local streams supplied the pure water. Which was something most farmers did in the winter but eventually distilling and whiskey making became more organized. One thing that hasn't changed -- the use of local barley and the fresh water from the streams. This is what gives each distillery a distinctive flavors and character. At least, that's what they told us and after two or three samples, I'd believe anything.

  • Betty's Trip to Maker's Mark Distillery with Rick--NO RECIPE In this video, Betty and her husband, Rick. visited the Maker's Mark Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky (about 70 miles from our home). This video shows several buildings associated with the making of Bourbon whisky (not spelled whiskey!). Rick and I spent some time just enjoying the scenic views around the distillery, and then we went on a tour that lasted about a half-hour. The tour showed us some history behind Maker's Mark and all the steps in making this liquor, which must be aged from about 6 years to 7 years. We finished our tour at the gift shop, where we were treated to Bourbon balls, a popular candy in Kentucky and a tasting of incompletely aged whisky as well as aged whisky . I asked our tour guide for the recipe for Maker's Mark Bourbon balls, and I was given the recipe--you may see thosein bettyskitchen later! At the gift shop, I also bought 2 dipping bottles of Bourbon (free of the red wax topping). I was allowed (helped) to dip those myself, and although I had a little trouble dipping the bottles in the hot red wax, one of them turned out beautifully! These are some of the things you will see in this little day trip video--and I will be making something with Marker's Mark Bourbon whisky for you soon! Kentucky produces 95% of the world's Bourbon whisky. I hope you enjoy this tour of a true Kentucky tradition! --Betty :)
  • Pedal Powered Water Distillery This is our entry to Specialized and Google's "Innovate or Die" competition. It is a bicycle-powered water distillery. Using friction heat from a bicycle "fluid trainer", contaminated or unsafe water is boiled, and the vapor is condensed, making it fit to drink. Currently the design relies on "pedal power", but it could be easily coupled with solar power, wind power, or a paddle-wheel in running water to produce clean water on a larger scale. The design has two boiling chambers as shown, one at atmospheric pressure and one under a vacuum to boil water at a lower temperature. The optional vacuum is created by the use a hand pump before riding the device to increase efficiency. The steam coming out of the first chamber heats the second chamber as it condenses. Any existing bicycle can be used and quickly mounted to the device.

  • Whiskey Distillery Opens OYSTER RIVER - After years of dreaming about it, a group of Comox Valley businessmen have now started their own single malt whiskey distillery, the newest of it's type in Canada. Shelter Point Distillery, located on a farm just north of Black Creek has fired up the boilers and is just days away from starting their first test batches. The partners toured several operations in Scotland while researching their plans and realized distillery tours were a huge part of several operations. They then upgraded their plans for the building that would house their operation. The result is an impressive facility that features luxurious tasting rooms, etched windows and several gas fireplaces. The men say the pride of the artisans and the craftsmen who worked on the building is evident throughout. Once the operation is fully up and running the partners will begin incorporating barley grown on the property just steps from the distillery. They will be testing a seed variety from the UK because the climate is similar to Vancouver Island.

  • Toronto Travel: Fall in Toronto The Distillery District & As thedays get shorter and the temperatures get lower, every little ray of sunshine seems to count and tempt me to rush outside to breathe in the last few glimpses of nice weather before we head into our long, cold and dark winter here in Toronto. So on September 19, 2009 I hopped on my bicycle again and cycled southwards along the Don Valley bicycle path. The colours are slowly turning and signs of fall are in the air everywhere. I headed to one of my favourite Toronto destinations: the Distillery District, North Americas largest collection of vintage Victorian-era industrial buildings that has been transformed into a popular entertainment and cultural district. After my delicious late lunch which included one of my favourites, baked pretzels with Dijon beer aioli & marinara sauce at the Mill Street Brew Pub, I took a stroll through this busy entertainment area that has become a favourite Toronto destination among locals and tourists alike. A major art installation graced the large outdoor space at the end of Trinity Street. I still havent been able to figure out what the combination of what appears to be a giant funnel and an oversize spiral is supposed to be and who it was created by. On September 20, 2009 another gorgeous day awaited me, and I had a few hours available to go biking on a busy day. I had read that a new portion of the Toronto Waterfront Trail had been opened next to Ontario Place the day before and wanted to see this newest addition to Torontos bicycle ...
