- Phalanx or Traitor? Impact of Gut Microbial Communities on Insect Health Air date: Thursday, March 01, 2012, 3:00:00 PM Timedisplayed is Eastern Time, Washington DC Local Category: Wednesday Afternoon Lectures Description: Research in the Handelsman lab focuses on understanding diversity in microbial communities and the role of microbial communities in infectious disease. In particular, we are interested in understanding a gut community that serves as a source of opportunistic pathogens, and the soil microbial community as a source of new genes and proteins. To study opportunistic pathogens, we developed a model system with the normal gut microbiota in lepidopteran insects. These normally benign bacteria kill the host under certain conditions, and our work aims to determine the mechanistic basis for host death. To explore microbial diversity, we use functional metagenomics to probe genetic and biochemical diversity in microbial communities. Metagenomics circumvents culturing, thereby capturing genetic information from organisms that cannot be cultured by standard methods, which represent the majority of the microbial world. Through this approach, we have discovered novel antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes, some of which encode bifunctional proteins. - Mitochondria: dynamic organelles critical for human health Mitochondria: dynamic organelles critical for human health Air date: Wednesday, October 03, 2012, 3:00:00 PM Description: Mitochondria are dynamic organelles that fuse, divide, and move. Human genetic studies indicate that these processes are important for normal functioning of tissues, particularly neurons. Mutations in Mitofusion-2 (Mfn2) cause peripheral neuropathy (Charcot-Marie-Tooth 2A), and mutations in optic atrophy 1 (OPA1) cause eye disease (dominant optic atrophy). Mouse knockout studies focused on the mitofusins Mfn1 and Mfn2 have shown that mitochondrial fusion is important for organellar function. Dr. Chan will discuss mouse studies that reveal the physiological functions of mitochondrial dynamics. In addition, Dr. Chan will discuss how new mouse models can be combined with imaging approaches to understand the role of mitochondrial dynamics in neurodegeneration. - Symptoms of Acute Bacterial Prostatitis Part 2 Prostate gland seems to be a small gland in the bodies of men, it affect lots of ***ual function of men. Symptoms of acute bacterial prostatitis can be very obvious, and they vary in different kinds of infection. In clinical cases, there are two types of symptoms of prostatitis: local symptoms and systemic symptoms. Patients who have hematogenous infection have systemic symptoms and for those who have lymphatic or diffusible infection, they are more possible to have local symptoms. Prostatitis is a common disease occur on male and the average age of the patients are getting younger. So what are the symptoms of acute bacterial prostatitis? Local symptpms: Irritation in the bladder and urethra: frequent urinate, urgent urinate, pain when urinate, urinate difficulty, hematuresis and even urodialysis. Irritation in the rectum: pain in the *** and perineum, constipation, pain when discharge and the pain sometimes spread to the abdomen. Systemic symptoms: A sudden hit of symptoms, high fever, pain and atony in the muscle and articulation, inappentence, vomit, and even symptoms of toxaemia.

In combination with the approved SIGA high-performance adhesives Majpell provides for permanently airtight building envelopes for roof, wall and ceiling structures in the interior. With a fixed sd value of 5m Majpell is on the one hand particularly diffusible. On the other hand it provides utmost safety, because it protects the building against excessive moisture penetration in the construction phase, for example by fresh cast plaster floor or walls just plastered. Thus Majpell can substitute variable vapour control layers which otherwise are mainly used for roof renovation. Combining Majpell with the breathable membrane Majcoat (sd value = 0.1 m) ensures perfect moisture transportation with a diffusion gradient of 50:1. www.siga.ch

The invisible substance that every hypha emits into the environment is actually avoided (as good as possible) by the growing tips themselves. Later, another type of hypha emerges, that seeks to fuse with other parts of the mycelium, thus decentralizing the network, as now there are multiple paths to other places inside the net. This in turn adds robustness to the system, as a single link breakage wouldn't disconnect large parts of the network. Now all i need is a little recycling..

- CONCENTRATION OF SOLUTIONS; PART 5; PLASMA COLLOID OSMOTIC PRESSURE by Professor Fink.wmv Professor Fink explains the Plasma Colloid Osmotic Pressure. In this lecture, Professor Fink shows how the total solute concentration of a fluid (in milliosmoles per L) can be used to calculate its osmotic pressure of a fluid. Since Blood Plasma contains non-diffusible proteins, it is slightly hypertonic compared to other body fluids, giving it an osmotic pressure of about 25 mm Hg higher than other fluids.

- Enzymes: A Simple Way To Improve Your Health Part 6 Digestive Enzymes (Hydrolases) Digestive enzymes provide relief for the digestive system because they break down proteins. There action is especially beneficial for those who have digestive conditions such as IBS, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac Disease, and Gluten Sensitivity. The human digestive system has 4 major sites of digestion: the oral cavity, the stomach, the duodenum, and the jejunum. Digestive enzymes are naturally secreted by different glands: the salivary glands, the glands in the stomach, the pancreas, and the glands in the small intestine. When foods are consumed, they must be broken down into simple, soluble, and diffusible substances before they can be absorbed into the body. Digestive enzymes start their action in the oral cavity by using saliva to break down food starches into smaller molecules. The various digestive enzymes help to break down the different components of foods such as starches, proteins, fatty acids, and sugars. Digestive enzyme supplements are becoming more popular as more people are learning that they have food allergies and digestive conditions. Most, but not all, digestive enzymes in supplements are extracted from natural foods. Although digestive enzyme supplements are available, the best way to obtain them is to eat natural foods that contain them. Raw fruits, vegetables, and "live food" juices are excellent sources of enzymes. There are three classes of ...
- Alzheimers:Toll of Beta-Amyloid And Tau Tangles Alzheimers Is the accumulation of amyloid-beta plaque deposits and protein tau tangles in the brain. It kills over 75000 people in the US each year. As many as 13.2 million people will have the disease in the US by 2050. AD inflicts the worst kind of devastation, with the loss of bodily functions, ultimately leading to death. An adult brain has 100 billion nerve cells, or neurons with extensions connected at 100 trillion points called synapses, where information flows. In AD, information transfer at synapses begins to fail as their number declines. An estimated 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimers disease. Most are elderly. One in eight people over 65 have the disease. The annual cost to the nation is 83 billion. The non-economic cost of AD care to family members can't be tolled. As the mean age of the worlds population increased, dementia has also increased. Its estimated that over 24 million people live with a form of dementia today. With 4.6 million new cases every year. The disease is extremely complicated with several proteins involved in its cause and progression. Cholesterol and inflammation are part of the disease process. Strokes and head injuries make Alzheimers more likely, they cause inflammation of the brain Genetic Causes of AD A po E4: The lipid transport apolipoprotein E4 is the largest genetic risk factor that leads to excessive amyloid beta plaque buildup and late-onset A D.
