  • IMPROVISATION: Diatonic Musical Patterns Search Andrew for FREE lesson Handouts. This Video: July 05, 2011 | Search Videos by Title/Date. GO TO: Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I'm not very well grounded in music theory, so I was wondering if playing by shapes would work for the time being? I know the basic shapes for the triad chords, but I feel I lack in getting good musical statements with them. Could you offer any tips for gaining a more spontaneous response for playing by shapes in my solos. - Otello, Italy A: One of the more important ideas when it comes to licks created by shapes is spending time practicing the shapes diatonically along related string sets and eventually along the entire fingerboard. The idea we're trying to develop is having a comfort level with scale & chord sound as it relates to shapes. And, you'll have to gain quite a high level of comfort with the shapes before you'll find that they just show up effortlessly in your solos. • Suzuki Manji M-20 Diatonic Harmonica: Part 2 Brendan Power demonstrates the all-new high performance harp from Suzuki: the MANJI. Every component has been designed from scratch: comb, coverplates, reeds and reedplates, for the ultimate in response, tone, durability and good looks. The comb is a specially formulated wood/resin composite which simulates the structure and sound of natural wood, but without the problems. The light but strong stainless steel covers have fully open backs, vent holes at the sides, and front-mounted single attachment screws. They have taken the traditional form forward with a beautiful clean contemporary design. But the killer app is that, in the Manji, new, phenomenally accurate reed-fixing processes have now enabled Suzuki to achieve the CLOSEST REED/SLOT TOLERANCES OF ANY MANUFACTURED HARP. This gives amazing response, volume and sweet crisp-edged tone. In addition, The Phosphor Bronze reeds have are longer and narrower for easy, stable overblows/overdraws and high durability. And all this comes at a very affordable price! The Manji will be shown for the first time at the August 2009 SPAH Convention in Sacramento, and released later this year. • Black Orpheus, Diatonic Harmonica Jazz Here is one of my favorite tunes. The melody is a pure beauty, and quite simple to be played. There is only one overblow (on a C harp), which can be replaced by playing at the lower octave. You'll find the tabs in the video, as well as the play-back present at 5'30''. Listen to the original tune to get closer to the "real" theme ;-) Even beginners can improvize and have fun on this tune. Blues players should make it swing quite easily. To improvize, you can use the A minor harmonic scale : -3'' -3 +4 -4 +5 -5 -6' -6 During the second loop, you can also play with the D minor harmonic scale : -1 -2'' -2 -3'' -3' -4' -4 You'll find great interpretations of this tune by Jobim, Jim Hall, ... I hope you'll like it.

  • Chord Families & Diatonic Substitution This video explains the various families of the harmonized major scale. After building chords upon each step of the major scale and naming the family name given to each step, the chords can then be grouped together. The groups represent an effect of common emotional effects. These chords present similar sounds due to the number of tones they share. The act of mixing one chord for and with others in a common family is the application of "Diatonic Substitution."
