It is more likely that each particle was either a mycelle or a vesicle [see Wikipedia for both terms]. Life is, indeed, wondrous to behold. The tank now has a developing population of beneficial microorganisms. These include bacteria, protozoans, diatoms, microphytoplankton and microzooplankton. The NanoStart kit comes with these components, plus nutrients and a Coralline Algae Booster Plate which we've placed into the hang-on filter box. We want the succession of life forms in our Nano Lagoon to mimic that which occurs on bare substrates on natural coral reefs. So far we are on schedule with the diatom bloom, which normally occurs within about two weeks of adding the first marine microorganisms.   • Diatom On Amscope Microscope and tucsen 10Mp Video Camera Yesterday, after a tip on how and where to collect subjects for the microscope, I went to a pet shop and bought a nice dip net with a 3 foot stainless handle and a super fine mesh net. This morning, I drove down to the Mississippi River in town, near a boat ramp, and collected some duckweed and some other water plants, by scraping the edge of the net bail along the plants and bringing up some pieces, along with the bugs that were attached to them. I also added some water from the river. I was able to collect some great specimens, some weed and some bugs actually big enough to see. This is two videos taken with the Tucsen 10Mp video camera in one of the eyepieces of the Amscope microscope and then merged together and a music track added in Movie Edit Pro 16. The Amscope is a trinocular microscope, but did not come with the proper adapter for the third tube so I could mount the Tucsen camera on it. The camera does mount, but the adapter is way too long, and the image quality suffers greatly. Using the camera in the eyetube gives much nicer video quality.

  • Beautiful Diatoms Cycling a new sal***er aquarium begins with two basic steps, the bacterial bloom and the diatom bloom. Living bacteria and diatoms must be introduced to the tank along with a nutrient source before these processes will occur. Rock and sand substrate should be in place in the main display tank before the cycling begins. Circulation pumps and powerheads should be on and lights should be running on a normal 12-hours-on, 12-hours-off cycle. No skimming is required during cycling. The bacterial bloom occurs first and makes the seawater slightly cloudy. The diatom bloom occurs next and leaves faint brown streaks on the rock, glass and sand. These processes may take 2-3 weeks to run their course. No water changes are needed during this period as they will only prolong the cycle. Diatoms are microscopic, single-celled algae with siliceous shells (made of silica). They are ubiquitous in the marine environment and along with bacteria are early colonizers of barren substrates like lava flows, dead coral, shipwrecks and artificial reefs. Many organisms consume diatoms in nature including single-celled protozoans, sponges, corals, gastropod and bivalve molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms, fishes and marine mammals like whales. Diatoms reproduce a***ually by simple cell division (mitosis). They may also reproduce ***ually after many mitotic divisions, or even enter a resting stage.
