NJIT Professor Kam Sirkar is awarded a water desalination patent NJIT Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering Kamalesh K. Sirkar was awarded a patent today for his water desalinization technology. "Desalination Devices and Systems Using Porous Hydrophobic Hollow Fibers and Hydrophobic Porous Coatings" (US Patent Number 8167143), discloses membrane devices and methods for direct contact membrane distillation and vacuum membrane distillation. Sirkar is the Foundation Professor in Membrane Separations at NJIT. These methods can recover a larger fraction of water from brine than reverse osmosis, the current industry standard for water desalination. In his research and pilot plant studies, Sirkar has achieved extraordinarily high water vapor fluxes and stable performances from brines with salt concentrations of up to 20 percent. Reverse osmosis as currently practiced for seawater desalination does not work when salt content exceeds 6 percent. This technology has been used to successfully treat sea water collected near the discharge from a nuclear power plant and liquid animal wastes. Membrane separation processes are used throughout the world by the chemical, food, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries to separate, purify or concentrate liquid solutions, cellular suspensions or gaseous mixtures. They are also increasingly important in meeting the growing global need for pure drinking water, an application that has been a major focus of Sirkar's recent research. Many membrane separation processes depend on ...

Gulf desalination plants harming the seas - 15 May 09 Most of the Arabian Peninsula is desert, and the people who live there have always struggled to find fresh water. Now, the region relies on desalinated seawater for most of its needs - from drinking water to irrigation. But as Steff Gaulter report, the dozens of fresh-water factories across the Gulf have a high environmental cost

A new approach to water desalination The availability of fresh water is dwindling in many parts of the world, a problem that is expected to grow with populations. One promising source of potable water is the world's virtually limitless supply of seawater, but so far desalination technology has been too expensive for widespread use. Now, MIT researchers have come up with a new approach using a different kind of filtration material: sheets of graphene, a one-atom-thick form of the element carbon, which they say can be far more efficient and possibly less expensive than existing desalination systems. Water Desalination In Israel In Israel, approximately 300 million cubic meters (MCM) of water are desalinated annually. This is done at three different seawater desalination facilities -- Ashkelon, Palmachim and Hadera, as well as at several other salty water desalination facilities. According to the decision made by the government of Israel in 2008, the goal is to achieve an annual desalination volume of 600 MCM as soon as possible, and reach an annual volume of 750 MCM by the year 2020. If this goal is reached, it will be possible to begin restoring groundwater reservoirs and maintain the Kinneret at the preferable water level.

The key to water reuse and desalination - Kemira membrane program 97% of the water on the Earth is salt water - lack of fresh water has forced us to seek unconventional water supplies. With the comprehensive use of chemistry, biology and mechanical treatment, we can put salt water to good use. Salt water can be purified for industrial processes - even to drinking water. However, the treatment is costly and highly energy intensive. Kemira membrane program is the key to water reuse and desalination. We offer application know-how and a wide range of products for membrane treatment particularly in reverse osmosis. We help our customers optimize their process from water intake to post treatment - sustainably.

Dr. George Tzamtzis discusses CyI's Desalination and Solar Energy project CDS-DSW on Sigma TV The first phase of the CSP-DSW project comprises of a comprehensive techno-economic feasibility study for the creation of a pilot (demonstration) plant will utilize solar power technology and tested desalination methods in a more efficient and environmental-friendly combined thermodynamical cycle for the production of water and simultaneous production of economically competitive, green energy. With the completion of the feasibility study, an implementation design will be proposed for the pilot plant that is best suited to Cyprus' needs and conditions. The second phase of the project is comprised by the actual installation of the plant that will be used to further advance the concept, engineering and optimize the use of this technology. The third and final phase will see the deployment of the refined technology plants for heavy-load commercial operation. The first phase of the project which was formally launched in the fall of 2008, will last 16 months. The Government of Cyprus has fully endorsed this project. Specifically, the President of the Republic of Cyprus HE Mr. Demetris Christofias declared (to the local press and in official EU meetings) the intention of the government to invest 18m Euros taken from the European Structural Funds to construct a prototype desalination unit that will be driven by solar-thermal power. Ambassador Shapiro Visit to IDE Desalination Plant in Hadera See the photos at: flic.kr On July 26, Ambassador Daniel Shapiro visited and toured the Hadera Desalination Plant, the newest and most modern desalination facility in Israel, and the leading desalination plant in the world. During the visit, the Ambassador learned more about Israel's strategic decision in 1999 to develop a large scale desalination program which today contributes nearly 50 percent of the potable water used in Israeli households. The head of Israel's Desalination Program, Abraham Tenne, and the Exceutive VP of Special Projects Hadera plant, Fredi Lokiec, provided the Ambassador with a strategic overview of Israel's future plans for desalination and led a tour of the plant's key facilities. At the end of the tour, the Ambassador had the opportunity to sample a glass of high quality drinking water which only 90 minutes earlier had been salty sea water. Ambassador Shapiro commended Israel for its impressive technology and urged Israeli water officials to continue their constructive engagement in the region on desalination training under the auspices of the multilateral MEDRC (Middle East Desalination Research Center) program in which the US plays a leading role. Desalination plant in West Bank tackles water shortage As summer nears, families living in the dusty Palestinian village of Marj Naaja located in the Jordan valley are set to face water shortages, a recurring problem in many parts of the West Bank. Water is one of the many contentious issues hindering a Palestinian-Israeli peace deal. It is also an increasingly scarce resource in the Middle East which makes finding a resolution to the issue even more urgent -- and complex. Palestinian farmers in Marj Naaja, like Mahmoud Ali, say they have recently been suffering due to Israel's control over water sources. He says they have had to use saline water for irrigation which is harmful to crops. However, the farmers can now hope to face a good season thanks to a small desalination plant. The plant is the result of a two-year collaboration project between the Munir Sukhtian trading group and the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development and was built in the village. "The main reason for this plant is that the 50-year-old water well under Road 90 contains salty water which we cannot use for agricultural purposes. We can only use the salt water for the palm trees," said head of the village council, Kayed Masoud. The fresh water generated from the plant will allow the farmers to expand their produce beyond palm tree dates, one of the only crops able to withstand being irrigated with saline water, to include more vegetables to sell at the local market. Masoud says Israeli officials have barred the village from creating any new wells ...
DIY: Emergency Desalination still If you're stuck near the ocean with access only to salt water you may want to give this a try. This simple desalination / desalinization, or desalinisation still removes salt from salt water and gives you potable water when you're done. In this version I use 1 pot to boil water, aluminum foil totrap the condensation, which is then funneled through a hydration reservoir tube, down into a catchment container. A wet cloth is used to aid condensing of the steam. This was my first try and it worked well, except for some escaping steam. Be responsible, be careful and have fun!
