  • Welch Allyn Automated External Defibrillators AED Recalled (May 2009) The device company Welch Allyn is recalling about 14000 automated external defibrillators. The affected models are AED 10 and MRL JumpStart defibrillators manufactured between October 3, 2002 and January 25, 2007. A number of problems have been reported with these defibrillators. They include devices that deliver less defibrillation energy than they were programmed for, susceptibility to electromagnetic interference, and unexpected shutdown during use. These problems could prevent a patient in cardiac arrest from being defibrillated, which could be fatal. The company has sent a letter to its customers about the recall, giving them instructions to return their units without delay so they may be repaired or replaced. Customers in the US and Canada may either exchange their AED 10 for a similar device at no cost, or purchase a new AED 10 directly from Welch Allyn at a reduced cost. International customers will be offered exchange AED 10 devices. For more information, contact the company at 1-888-345-5356.
  • Heart transplantation The video shows an orthotopic heart transplantation using the "bicaval technique". It begins with the harvesting of the donor heart (frequently at a remote site, as in the video). Another surgeon stays with the patient to prepare him for the transplant (opening the chest and installation of cardiopulmonary bypass). Coordination between the two surgical teams (logistics, transportation, anesthesia and incision) must be perfect in order to minimize the duration of ischemia (time between removal and implantation of the heart must remain under 5 hours). Everything must be ready at the arrival of the donor heart, so that the surgeon can perform the transplant without wasting time. The graft is prepared (to fit with the recipient) and the cardiopulmonary bypass started allowing the explantation of the failing heart. The different stages of the intervention are shown interspersed with diagrams. At the end of vascular anastomoses, the heart is purged to remove any air bubbles, then the aorta unclamped. The heart is defibrillated with an electric shock. See other video in cardiac surgery : Pr Chavanon, Faculty of Medicine, CHU Grenoble Joseph Fourier University. Music: Pinnacle Studio software

The i-PAD NF1200 is designed for minimally trained individuals. It provides simple and direct voice prompts and instructions for straightforward rescue operation. It is lightweight and battery powered for maximum portability. The i-PAD NF1200 is intended to treat Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) and Fast Ventricular Tachycardia. These two conditions are the most common causes of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). In SCA, the heart of the victim suddenly stops pumping. This condition may occur suddenly to any age group without warning. The only effective treatment for SCA is the application of a defibrillating shock. The i-PAD NF1200 has been manufacturing and distributing around the world by CU Medical Systems, Inc. since 2001. (www.cu911.com)

  • Ex Egyptian Preisdent Hosni Mubarak clinically dead : Reports Cairo: Deposed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak suffered a brain stroke and was shifted from Yura prison to a military Hospital in southern Cairo, with some media reports claiming he is "clinically dead". The 84-year-old former president, who is serving a life sentence, was in a "critical" condition and transferred to Maadi Hospital late on Tuesday night after he was defibrillated in the prison hospital, state-run new agency MENA reported. The agency quoted hospital sources as saying that Mubarak was "clinically dead". "His heart had stopped beating and did not respond to defibrillation," it said. But Nile TV said that attempts are continuing to revive him and he has been put on ventilator. The television station began broadcasting archival footage of Mubarak during his presidency, which ended with a popular uprising last year. Al Jazeera quoted a lawyer for Mubarak's family as saying that the ousted president was actually unconscious and on a respirator after he was rushed to Maadi Hospital. Mubarak's wife Suzanne has reportedly arrived at the hospital. "We do understand from family sources that Hosni Mubarak is improving," Al Jazeera said. "We believe he is still in a coma." Mubarak was sentenced to life on June 2 for his role in the death of over 800 anti-regime protesters last year. There have been frequent reports since then that his health has deteriorated, many of which have proved wrong. Mubarak's condition deteriorated following his conviction and he suffered an ...

  • Insidermedicine in 60 - January 3, 2008 From Kansas City - New research shows that nearly a third of patients who suffered from cardiac arrest were not defibrillated within the critical 2 minute window, cutting the chances of survival in half. Risk factors for these delays included being admitted for non-cardiac causes, being admitted to a hospital with fewer than 250 beds and having the event after regular working hours. From Maryland - The FDA has approved a test that checks for methicillin-resistant staph aureus. The test, called BD GeneOhm StaphSR Assay, delivers results within a few hours and was shown to have a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 98%. Given the rise in prevalence of MRSA, this new assay could result in significant savings for the healthcare system. And finally, from Chicago - Disrupted sleep may raise the risk for diabetes. Researchers monitored a group of healthy individuals who slept in an environment where 300 audible sounds were delivered. The subjects experienced the equivalent of giving a 20 year old the same quality of sleep as a 60 year old. The results showed that disrupted sleep altered insulin sensitivity by 25%. • Ohio School District Receives AED Grant from Cintas Ohio high school teachers are feeling a bit more confident about their ability to save the lives of their students thanks to a generous donation from Cintas Corporation. Delaware City School District, located just outside of Columbus, OH was one of 600 schools that applied from 100 AEDs (automatic external defibrillators) through the Cintas Scholastic AED Grant Program. The District applied after a frightening experience involving a high school senior. Dayonne Johnson was running around the track during his high school teams basketball practice when he collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest. His coach performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Paramedics defibrillated Dayonne 4 times on the track and 2 more times at the hospital. It became apparent that the school district needed their own defibrillators. Sudden cardiac arrest can happen at any minute and affects more than 250000 people every year. http

  • Remembering to Re-Activate a Patients Defibrillator (Apr 08) A recent FDA article in the journal "Nursing2008" describes the case of a patient who died, possibly of ventricular fibrillation, following elective surgery. This happened because after the procedure, his implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) wasn't reactivated. ICDs are subject to interference from MRI and CT machines, and also from sources such as electrocautery devices. This interference can cause inappropriate shocks to the patient, and so ICDs are often turned off prior to medical and surgical procedures. But unless they're turned back on immediately afterwards, the patient will be unprotected against potentially lethal arrhythmias. To prevent these kinds of errors, here's what the article recommends: • Document information about the patient's ICD in the medical record. • As the patient moves through the system, be sure other personnel know that the patient has an ICD and whether it is on or off. • While the ICD is inactivated, provide continuous cardiac monitoring and have emergency equipment close by. • Ensure that the ICD is reactivated after the medical or surgical procedure is finished. She graduated in 1981 from Archbishop Wood Catholic High School. Terri met Michael Schiavo in 1982 in a sociology class at Bucks County Community College. Firefighters and paramedics arrived in response to Michael's 9-1-1 call and found her face-down, not breathing, had no pulse, and was unconscious. They attempted to resuscitate Terri, defibrillated her heart several times before transporting her to Humana Northside Hospital where she had been intubated, ventilated, and restored breathing through a tracheotomy. • Ed and Mary Lou: Cardiac Arrest and Helicopter Transport Ed wasn't feeling well. He started having chest pains but thought it was indigestion. An employee convinced him to have it checked out - and ten minutes after arriving at Rutland Regional Medical Center, Ed went into cardiac arrest. "He literally flatlined," his wife, Mary Lou, said. Ed was defibrillated 14 times in the emergency room. It was clear he needed advanced cardiac care. "They didn't think Ed was going to make it," said Mary Lou. His best chance sat 150 miles away, in the Dartmouth-Hitch*** Advanced Response Team (DHART) hangar at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. When the helicopter and its team arrived and Ed was stabilized, he was loaded aboard for the 12-minute flight to Dartmouth-Hitch*** Medical Center. "[Flight nurse Deanna McGrew] told me that she would take good care of him - and she did," Mary Lou said. At DHMC, surgeons implanted four stents into Ed's heart, and Thompson's battle back began. On Mary Lou's birthday, Ed woke up. "His first words were, 'I love you,'" she said. A year later, Ed is back at work, undergoing cardiac rehabilitation, and well on the road to recovery. "He'll even eat the carrot sticks I pack in his lunch every day," Mary Lou said. "The care at Dartmouth was amazing. Not only did they take care of my husband, they took care of me and my sister," Mary Lou said. "You have an amazing person in the critical care waiting room ... Gregory checked on me every day ... • Heart Attack Miracle Recovery Phoenix firefighter Mike Glennie began walking to and from work to boost his cardio conditioning. He felt great and was happy that his workouts were producing results. Then something went wrong. On May 28, 2010, Mike did not make it home. Without any warning, he suffered a massive heart attack and dropped to the ground. Mike was defibrillated on site and taken to a nearby Phoenix hospital in a coma and carcinogenic shock. He needed more specialized care, and was airlifted to Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center. The 55-year-old had to be resuscitated three times before a pulse was found. Surgery was the only option for his survival. Hypothermia treatment protocol began in the intensive care unit, cooling his body so Mike would be stable for open heart surgery. Next, an angiogram was performed and displayed several blockages. Two days passed while Mike's family, friends and firefighting colleagues waited by his side. There seemed to be little hope. On May 30, Scottsdale Healthcare cardiovascular surgeon Michael Caskey, MD performed a successful five-bypass surgery. Mike woke shortly after surgery completely mentally intact, progressed well and went home 12 days later. "They tell me I should not have lived," he says. "The nurses all told me that I was a fighter, although I don't remember most of it." Today, experts can't find anything wrong with his heart and Mike has returned to doing what he loves―"driving big red." "The team at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical ...

Lieutenant Donald Gurule, Driver Nathaniel Meisner and Michael Mendel and Fire Fighters Duane Esquibel, Brennie McCoy and Mario Montoya received this weeks Fridays Heroes Award. Each week Mayor Berry or Public Safety Director Darren White recognize at least one public safety employee who went above the call of duty. Each week it amazes me the stories we hear, Mayor Berry said. It wows us. But to our firefighters, police officers and dispatchers, its every day business. On Dec. 10, Rescue 9 and Engine 12 were dispatched to Manzano High School at 11:15a.m. after 14-year-old Nicholas Roldan collapsed. He was unconscious, with no pulse and not breathing. Before AFDs arrival, Ms. Evans, a teacher at Manzano, started performing CPR with mouth to mouth ventilations in an attempt to revive the boy. An Automatic Electronic Defibrillator was also brought to the classroom and Roldan was defibrillated once. The AFD units arrived minutes later and found Roldan laying flat on the floor in a classroom. He was still unconscious, pulse less and not breathing. Rescue 9 immediately secured Nicholas's airway and attached the monitor. Bystander's continued CPR until Engine 12 arrived. Epinephrine was administered and Roldan suddenly had a pulse rate of 130 beats per minute. Minutes ...
