  • Ego - Decentralized Social Networking Ego is to social networking what P2P is to file-sharing. Like in P2P networks, each user uses a program, dubbed agent, that discovers and communicates with other programs in the internet by following a well-defined and extensible protocol. Unlike P2P networks, agents are indexable by search engines and as such can discover each other by doing a simple web search. This eliminates the need for seeding nodes, directories, central servers, etc. Agents allow their owner to select the levels of access different groups can have to private information, search engines included. Agents can also run arbitrary, downloadable applications that extend their capabilities, like keeping track of their location, interfacing with their owner over IM, etc.

  • HAR 2009: The power of decentralization 2/7 Clip 2 Speakers: Laurent de Wolf, Vincent Guffens Agent-based simulation of a decentralized power network MADMAX AGAINST THE POWER OF DECENTRALIZATION In a world where oil is scarce, violence, chaos and desperation rein. But what about our world without power? Electricity has become vital for all these appliances that make our daily life so enjoyable. Our network, our tellies our fridges and freezers are as dependent on their power supply that we are on them. In this paper, or should we say in this fiction note, we investigate how a citizen based decentralized power system could work and how an auction based bidding system could insentivize people to switch off their devices so that others, more eager to consume, could benefit from their spare capacity. Would the theory of auction, combined with the next generation of micro power sources, restore order in a place where scarcity would otherwise prevail? For more information go to: har2009.org

Yet, due to their specific characteristics like wireless multihop data transmission and lack of central trusted instances, infrastructureless and decentralized networks are also beyond the protection of contemporary security mechanisms. This especially requires consideration in possible first responder or military application scenarios. Various new threats targeting each layer of the ISO/OSI model have been identified. Central questions regarding security include how to deal with misbehavior and how to protect information in networks without well-defined borders, consisting of devices, services, and users from multiple administrative domains. In this talk we present possible solutions for excluding misbehaving nodes from infrastructureless networks to recover the availability of the network in presence of attacks. We further present mathematical tools for governing cooperative decision processes without central trusted instances as basis for security objectives such as authentication and access control in decentralized systems. We show evaluation results based on ***ytical models as well as simulation and testbed studies and highlight general challenges regarding the evaluation of ...

  • Securing the Web with Decentralized Information Flow Control This talk discusses how to secure both today's web sites and tomorrow's web computing platforms with a new OS technique called Decentralized Information Flow Control (DIFC). A DIFC system tracks the flow of secret data as it is copied from file to file and communicated from process to process. DIFC provides better security than standard OSes because it allows developers to concentrate security-critical code in small, audit-friendly declassifiers, which remain small and contained even as the overall system balloons with new features. • V for Vendetta-ANONYMOUS-DeCentralized Faceless Resistance Against The Establishment.flv Please Read! Please download & upload to your YOUTUBE channel & share with everyone you know. 1. Shatter the Left/Right paradigm by dismissing any remaining doubt that there is a difference between Democrats/Republicans. They have successful run a train on the American people by playing the old good cop/bad cop routine for years. One side will run as far towards tyranny as the people will allow, only to "Hand the Baton Off" to the other on the far side of the elections. 2. Shatter the paradigm that the Constitution never was relevant & now that the "president" can unilaterally declare a US citizen a terrorist, order his assassination, without judicial review, legislative oversight, or administrative appeal. This is proof that the 5th & 14th Amendment right to life liberty, & property reads as void, and no constitution is worth anything, if one is not alive to enjoy its restraint of the state, period. 3. Shatter the paradigm that we have a functional court/justice (JUST-US) system in the US. 5. Shatter the paradigm that the "Republic" is able to be saved. Sorry folks there never was a republic, so it is beyond being saved by Democrats, Republicans, Tea Party Patriot, Truthers, Constitutionalists, etc... It was never ours to begin with: "But, indeed, no private person has a right to complain, by suit in court, on the ground of a breach of the Constitution. • DEFCON 16: Generic, Decentralized, Unstoppable Anonymity: The Phantom Protocol Speaker: Magnus Bråding, Security Researcher, Fortego Security Recent years, and especially this past year, have seen a notable upswing in developments toward anti online privacy around the world, primarily in the form of draconian surveillance and censorship laws (both passed and attempted) and ISPs being pressured into individually acting as both police and informants for commercial interests. Once such first steps are taken, it's of course also of huge concern how these newly created possibilities could be used outside of their originally stated bounds, and what the future of such developments may be. There are no signs of this trend being broken anytime soon, and combined with the ever growing online migration of everything in general, and privacy sensitive activities in particular (like eg voting and all kinds of discussions and other personal groupings), this will in turn unavoidably lead to a huge demand for online anonymization tools and similar privacy means. If not designed carefully though, such anonymization tools will yet again be easy targets for additional draconian legislation and directed (il)legal pressure from big commercial interests. Thus, a good, robust and theoretically secure design for an anonymization protocol and infrastructure is needed, which is exactly what is set out to be done with this project. What is presented in this talk is the design of a protocol and complete system for anonymization, intended as a candidate for a free, open ...

We arrived to discover about 10 people and no hint of a party.. but once we pumped up the jams and started cutting loose, a modest crowd began to form, growing steadily as the night progressed. A pretty good test run and a pretty good time! What is a Decentralized Dance Party (DDP)? The DDP is a portable, battery-powered Party System invented by Tom and Gary, two ridiculous human beings from Vancouver, Canada. It consists of hundreds of Party People, carrying boomboxes, and a DJ who wears a backpack, containing a powerful FM transmitter. All the boomboxes are tuned into the DJ's master FM broadcast, resulting in a mobile, synchronized sound system. This Portable Dance Party roams the night, generating complete awesomeness, street by street and block by block, onto buses and subways, into public fountains and beyond! Inevitably interfacing with the public, together we create an infectious epidemic of fun. A Roaming Party Adventure that lasts all night long! But don't take our word for it: The link below showcases the evolution of the Decentralized Dance Party: from 20 people to 20000 in the span of 6 short months!

We need substance at the beginning of the conversation so the question is appropriate. What are the advantages and disadvantages? I would add, What are the challenges? and I would start with an answer to the challenges. The challenges are to get rid of the disadvantages and increase the advantages. Our local board structure has the advantage that it has people closest to the community, to the region, to where the action is happening and they know and they have the intelligence level to make sure that what were talking about has meaning in a local flavor. Driving everything from the top down misses the extensive variety that exists in Missouri. Local boards are able to focus; in one community the dropout rate and therefore the pipeline is very low and we got large college attendance rate. That is very ...
