  • He Ain't Pretty, But He's One Tough Kitty! Ralston, Take 2! Doc Pawsitive, Clair Thompson, had a little free time Friday afternoon at East Stroudsburg Veterinary Hospital and got tired of looking at the front of Ralstons' face and head, where there was an exposed portion of the kittens skull, roughly about the size of a quarter. Ralston has sustained damage to his face, head and legs while caught in a leghold type trap. This one tough kitten has already undergone a number of surgical procedures with great aplomb, so what's one more!? Dr Clair decided to perform a procedure he called "the sliding scalp flap cap" to cover the exposed scalp/bone. After the nursing team prepped and prepared the kitten, Dr Clair debrided the wound edges, essentially cleaning up the area to improve the likelihood of a successful sliding flap. After debridement, Dr Clair made 2 parallel incisions roughly 3/4" apart extending back over the top of Ralstons' head. Next, he undermined the scalp flap, essentially lifting the scalp free from the skull and "flapping" the scalp forward, pulling it forward almost an inch to cover the skull, then using sutures to re-attach the flap along the sides of the flap. The goal of the sliding scalp flap cap was to leave enough of a blood supply from the rear of the flap to keep the flap alive and vital, while it heals over the previously exposed skull. Time will tell if enough blood supply was preserved to keep the flap alive for healing to take place. When waking from the procedure, Ralston had to have an Elizabethan ...

  • Hyperbaric Chamber Treatment and Wounds http Rationale: In an hypoxic environment, wound healing is halted by decreased fibroblast proliferation collagen production, and capillary angiogenesis (1). Hypoxia also allows growth of anaerobic organisms, further complicating wound healing. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy provides a significant increase in tissue oxygenation in the hypoperfused, infected wound. It influences the rate of collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and bacterial clearance in wounds. The greatest benefits are achieved in tissues with compromised blood flow and oxygen supply. Diabetic Wounds: The increased wound oxygen tension achieved with HBO promotes wound healing, increases the host antimicrobial defenses and has a direct bacteriostatic effect on anaerobic microorganisms. Venous Stasis Ulcers: HBO therapy has a very limited role. It is only indicated in highly selected patients in the preparation of a granulating bed over debrided venous ulcer for eventual skin grafting. (2) Pressure Ulcers: HBO therapy may be useful when underlying osteomyelitis is present or to improve the soft tissue envelope for reconstruction. Arterial Insufficiency Ulcers: HBO therapy may be of benefit in selected cases, especially when a wound fails to heal despite maximum revascularization. Treatments: HBO treatments are performed at 2.0 to 25 ATA for 90 to 120 minutes of oxygen breathing. The initial treatment schedule is dictated by the severity of the disease process. In the presence of limb ...

  • Laser Treatment for Fungal Toenails - Podiatrist in Middlefield, CT Laser Treatment for Fungal Toenails - Podiatrist in Middlefield, CT Toenail fungus, known as Onychomycosis, affects about half of Americans by the age of 70. It is relatively rare in children, but the incidence increases with age. Fungus infections occur when microscopic fungi gain entry through a small trauma in your nail, then grow and spread in the warm, moist environment inside your socks and shoes. The causative pathogens of onychomycosis include dermatophytes, Candida, and non-dermatophytic molds. Symptoms of toenail fungus, which may be caused by several types of fungi, include swelling, yellowing, thickening or crumbling of your toenail, streaks or spots down the side of your nail, and even complete loss of your toenail. Toenail color can vary from brown or yellow to white. Fungal infections can affect your fingernails as well as the toenails, but, since your toenails grow more slowly, toenail fungus is more difficult to treat. It occurs most often on your big or small toe, but it may occur on any toe. You can get toenail fungus in damp areas such as public gyms, shower stalls or swimming pools, and you can easily pass it along to the rest of your family. Athletes and people who wear tight-fitting shoes or tight hosiery that cause trauma to the toes or keep the feet from drying out are at higher risk. You can also get fungal toenails from pedicure salons that do not appropriately sterilize their equipment. Treating Fungal Toenails ...

  • Tremors & the Vibraboard Biomechanical Stimulation We are all familiar with tremor at least in one form, and that is the purring of cats. Cat purrs are created by false vocal cords and based on spectral ***ysis, have three predominant frequencies, namely 25, 50 and 120 hertz. What is not widely known is that it is not only the felid family that purrs, and that purring does not always indicate contentment. Many other animals also exhibit purring including bears, rhinoceros, whales, and dolphins. Furthermore, purring also happens when animals are frightened or injured. Since purring takes some considerable effort on the side of the purror, and given that is not simply used as a method of communication, we may conclude that there is some specific benefit afforded the animal that purrs. This is supported by the veterinary observations showing that animals that purr heal injuries to their skin, bones, muscles tendons, ligaments and lungs much faster than those that do not. Comparing domestic dogs and cats sheds some light on the subject. The records of 31484 dogs and 15226 cats from 52 veterinary practices reveals that the prevalence of arthritis and lameness in dogs as 2.4 and 3.1%. In cats it is not mentioned as being reported.1 Additionally, non-union of fractures in cats is rare.2 Finally, in free skin grafting in dogs, the overlapped skin edges of the graft usually become necrotic by 3 days postoperatively, and need to be debrided. In cats, the grafts are usually viable even after six days ...

  • Dr. Pierre Brassard #2 Plastic and SRS surgery News report which features Brassard and his Montreal clinic on 13 Nov. 2008. I found the following written testimony on a mtf trans***ual website. It proves once more that when one chooses Brassard to perform surgeries, disaster is looming large! My Montreal "Experience" by knitgal 2001 I had surgery with Dr, Brassard this past August, and if I had to do it all over again I definitely would NOT go back to Montreal. My problems with my "Montreal experience" were many. First, Compared to the Davis Medical Center in SF where I had surgery with Dr. Ousterhout, I felt that the clinic was down right primitive. People complained that the nursing staff in SF was unresponsive, well, they were light years ahead of the staff at Montreal, unless of course, you conversed at least partially in French with them. My roommate spoke some French, and received far more attention from the nurses. I don't want it to sound like I'm picking on the nurses, I started nursing school this September, and compared to the nurses if SF, the nurses in the hospitals here in NY, and from the nursing students I go to school with, the care from the nurses in Montreal just plain sucked. The beds are manual, and they got all pissy every time you used you call button to have you bed adjusted, when I did only when the position got too uncomfortable to bear. I gave up after a while and just staggered out of bed to do it myself. The consistently made the top sheet on the bed too tight and left no room for me to ...
