  • Haead of St John Chrysostom brought to New York On February 6, 2010, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the honorable head of the universal teacher, St John Chrysostom, housed at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, was brought to the Synodal Cathedral of Our Lady of the Sign. The relic will remain there for the faithful to venerate until February 11. Information concerning the venerable head of St. John Chrysostom In 1652, Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich (1629-1676) learned from Archimandrite Damascene, the abbot of the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos, that the monastery was the guardian of the head of St. John Chrysostom, which the monastic brotherhood had received three hundred years earlier as a gift from the Byzantine emperor, John Cantacuzene (c.1292-1383). The abbot, in the hope of receiving substantial gift and monetary support, offered to send the relic to Moscow of veneration. Alexis gladly accepted the offer and commanded Damascene and his monastic brotherhood to travel to Moscow and to see the eyes of his royal majesty. He promised to return the head of the Saint in the custody of the same person who had brought it to Moscow. In 1655, Damascene brought the holy relic to Moscow, but he never got opportunity to return with it to Vatopedi. Tsar Alexis tricked the monks and kept the relic, at first, he said, temporarily, but then for good. All of the appeals and petitions of the visiting monastic allowed himself publicly to express his displeasure at the turn of ...

  • Al Azem Palace - قصر العظم‎, Syria 2010 Azem Palace (Arabic: قصر العظم‎) is a palace in Damascus, Syria which was originally built in 1750 as a residence for the Ottoman governor of Damascus As'ad Pasha al-Azm. The palace now houses the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions. The architecture is an excellent example of Damascene traditional houses. The structure itself consists of several buildings and two wings: the harem and the salamlik. The harem is the family wing, which is a private space for the residents (the Azm family originally). This wing includes the kitchen, servant quarters, and the baths, which are a replica of the public baths in the city but on a smaller scale. The salamlik is the guest wing, and it comprises the formal halls, reception areas and large courtyards with traditional cascading fountains. Used in the building of this palace were several types of stones including limestone, sandstone, basalt, and marble. This provided for a natural decorative appearance of the structure. The ceilings have painted wooden panels that display natural scenes. In 1925, the Azm palace was heavily damaged by French artillery during the Syrian revolution. It has since been restored and became a museum of arts and folk traditions. It received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1983.

  • The Feast of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Pius XII states in the constitution "Munificentissimus Deus," which defined belief in the Assumption as a matter of faith: "All the arguments and considerations of the Fathers and theologians rest on Sacred Scripture for their ultimate foundation. The Scriptures present the beloved Mother of God as most intimately united with her divine Son as ever sharing in his lot. Hence, it seems all but impossible to see her who conceived Christ. . .as separated from him, if not in soul, yet in body, after her life on earth was over. . .Seeing that by preserving her from the corruption of the tomb he could give her such great honor, we must believe that he actually did so." St. John Damascene (d. 749) called the Doctor of the Assumption, writes, "On this day the sacred and life-filled ark of the living God, she who conceived her Creator in her womb, rests in the Temple of the Lord that is not made with hands. David, her ancestor, leaps, and with him the angels lead the dance." Documentation testifies that the feast was celebrated first in the Eastern Church in the second half of the sixth century. Pope Sergius I (687-701) ordered its observance in Rome. At first it was kept as a memorial of Mary's death, her falling asleep (dormition), and it gradually came to be a commemoration of her Assumption as such.

Entry from: Damascus, Syria Entry Title: "Damascus: Living, breathing history" Entry: "After a brief stop at home in Lattakia, Damascus was my next stop. If only for a long weekend I would be contributing to the millions, possibly billions, of people to have lived in the oldest inhabited city in the world. As the capital of Syria, major stop on the silk route, centre of an Islamic (Umayyad) Caliphate, a facet to numerous empires stemming back to the 13th century BC Damascus has seen its share of trials and tribulations; glory days and stagnant nights. So on my way there I was expecting a couple of things: to be confronted by a hectic, unruely city (as the capital of Syria I would assume it to exhibit ALL Syrian characteristics), a sprawling market, epic buildings and a people who would make the most obtrusive Londoner look timid. Damascus, or Dimashq al-Sham, sprawls over the desert plains of south-west Syria running down the foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range. It's an amazing thing to see a city, especially a capital, thriving in no less than a desert. It certainly strikes a stark contrast with the environment; the black, grey and noisy amidst beige, orange and silent. From above, a scorched splurge covering a blank canvas. Putting aside any qualms about 'the environment' staying in ...
  • Christian Easter Hymns with Lyrics - Day of Resurrection ( St. John of Damascus ) Christian Easter Hymns with lyrics - Day of Resurrection ( St. John of Damascus ) Christian Hymns playlist: John of Damascus - (c. 675-749), Syrian monk and priest Saint John Damascene has the double honor of being the last but one of the fathers of the Eastern Church, and the greatest of her poets. It is surprising, however, how little that is authentic is known of his life. The account of him by John of Jerusalem, written some two hundred years after his death, contains an admixture of legendary matter, and it is not easy to say where truth ends and fiction begins. The ancestors of John, according to his biographer, when Damascus fell into the hands of the Arabs, had alone remained faithful to Christianity. They commanded the respect of the conqueror, and were employed in judicial offices of trust and dignity, to administer, no doubt, the Christian law to the Christian subjects of the Sultan. His father, besides this honorable rank, had amassed great wealth; all this he devoted to the redemption of Christian slaves on whom he bestowed their freedom. John was the reward of these pious actions. John was baptized immediately on his birth, probably by Peter II, bishop of Damascus, afterwards a sufferer for the Faith. The attainments of the young John of Damascus commanded the veneration of the Saracens; he was compelled reluctantly to accept an office of higher trust and dignity than that held by his father. As the Iconoclastic controversy became more ...

  • Hammaming in the Sham, A Journey through the Turkish Baths of Damascus, Aleppo and Beyond Visit the book page at By Richard Boggs, Garnet Publishing 2010 / Legend has it that Damascus once had 365 hammams or 'Turkish baths': one for each day of the year. Originally part of an ancient Roman tradition, hammams were absorbed by Islam to such an extent that many became almost annexes to nearby mosques. For centuries, hammams were an integral part of community life, with some 50 hammams surviving in Damascus until the 1950s. Since then, however, with the onslaught of modernization programmes and home bathrooms, many have been demolished; fewer than 20 Damascene working hammams survive today. In Hammaming in the Sham, Richard Boggs travels the length and breadth of modern Syria, documenting the traditions of bathing in Damascus, Aleppo and elsewhere, and his encounters with Syrians as they bathe. In his portrayal of life in the hammams he reveals how these ancient institutions cater for both body and soul, and through his conversations with the bathers within, he provides insights into the grass roots of contemporary Syrian society. Approximately 100 colour photographs accompany the text, portraying the traditional neighbourhoods of Damascus and Aleppo, and the almost religious feel of the hammams. The author's intimate portraits of the baths' employees and bathers show a unique side of Syria rarely exposed to the outside world. Richard Boggs has worked for over a decade in the Arabic-speaking world, teaching in Yemen, Lebanon and Khartoum. For ...

We had a very good buffet lunch at the Kyoto Handicraft Center, a building of 7 floors. • Five Letters to my Mother - Arabic Poetry with English subtitles EMAD TV presents Arabic Poetrry Five Letters to my Mother by Nezar Qabbani Good morning sweetheart. Good morning my Saint of a sweetheart. It has been two year mother since the boy has sailed on his mythical journey. Since he hid within his luggage the green morning of his homeland and her stars, and her streams, and all of her red poppy. Since he hid in his cloths bunches of mint and thyme, and a Damascene Lilac. * I am alone. The smoke of my cigarette is bored, and even my seat of me is bored My sorrows are like flocking birds looking for a grain field in season. I became acquainted with the women of Europe, I became acquainted with their tired civilization. I toured India, and I toured China, I toured the entire oriental world, and nowhere I found, a Lady to comb my golden hair. A Lady that hides for me in her purse a sugar candy. A lady that dresses me when I am ***, and lifts me up when I fall. Mother: I am that boy who sailed, and still longes to that sugar candy. So how come or how can I, Mother, become a father and never grow up. I send my best regards to a house that taught us love and mercy. To your white flowers, the best in the neighborhood. To my bed, to my books, to all of the kids in the alley. To all of these walls we covered with noise from our writings. To the lazy cat sleeping on the balcony. To the lilac climbing bush the neighbor's window. It has been two long years, Mother, with the face of Damascus being like a bird, digging within my conscience ...
