Dairy farming in South Dakota USA A few years ago i went over to South Dakota in the US.with 12 other dairy farmers from UK & Ireland to see dairy farms and cheese plants in the Sioux Falls area (Along the Interstate 29). We were guests of SD Min of AGriculture. The SD government wanted UK and Irish farmers to build new dairy farms on green field sites- Minimum size - 500 cows up to 2500 cows or more. The State required 65.000 more cows to supply cheese plants.

Milking Dairy Cows- Tie-Stall Barn Video www.virtualfarmtours.ca A Canadian dairy farmer explains how he milks his cows in his tie-stall barn. Transcript Tyler-In my barn each cow has her own stall with bedding, free access to feed and water in her manger. Cows are milked twice a day in their stall alongside their herd mates. When I milk a cow, I wash and sanitize the udder before attaching the milking unit, and once this is completed the milking machine is attached to all four teats of the cow's udder. A hose runs from the milking machine to the stainless steel pipeline located over the cow's head. The pipeline runs the length of the barn and is connected to the big bulk tank in the milk house. The milk is quickly cooled in the bulk tank and kept there until the milk truck picks it up. Afterwards she can be let out to pasture and nice weather.
