- Institute of Genetics and Cytology of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus... Institute of Genetics and Cytology of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus marks 45th anniversary. Natalia Martselova reports: Today the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus meets world tendencies. The institute uses the latest achievements of molecular biology for genome studies of all bodies. (Alexander Kilchevsky, Director of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Doctor of Biological Sciences, professor: "We worked out modern technologies of use of molecular markers for selection of plants, animals, microorganisms for identification of human hereditary diseases, uncovering potential capabilities of athletes.") Specialists of the institute hold DNA certification of sportsmen, because sport is not only health and harmony, it is also huge investment. Scientists tested the Olympic biathlon athletes. 95 percent of genes are good. But there are also unfavorable variants. Scientists offered doctors their method of correction. (Irma Mosse, head of the human genetics laboratory of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Doctor of Biological Sciences, professor) Developments of the Belarusian scientists are in demand abroad. Nowadays the institute cooperates with organizations from 15 countries of the world. Over 30 contracts are in operation. Venezuela is one of the most important directions today. 2 contracts for USD 450000 are signed with the ...

- Mobile Telemedicine for Cervical Cancer Screening Throughout the developing world, delivery of womens health care, specifically cervical cancer screening, is limited by cost and access to trained personnel. Cytology-based screening programs, in use in developed nations, are not feasible in the developing world due to high cost, need for infrastructure, and trained cytologists. Mobile telemedicine allows medical consultations to be submitted via mobile phone, at low cost, without the need for a computer or Internet access. Telemedicine is best suited for visually-based diagnostics, and thus is ideal for use with cervical cancer screening using visual inspection with application of 4% acetic acid (VIA), a simple, inexpensive alternative to cytology-based screening. It is our goal to use mobile telemedicine to provide accurate diagnosis of precursor lesions, and appropriate triaging and implementation of therapy for women at risk for cervical cancer. Using the 5 Megapixel camera-enabled Samsung Soul U900 cell phone, clinicians in VIA see and treat cervical cancer screening clinics can capture high quality images of the cervix. Photos are then transmitted via the mobile phone to a gynecology specialist located remotely. We present the design and initial results of a prospective case control study to evaluate the accuracy and safety of remote diagnosis using photographic images of the cervix in HIV positive women in Gaborone, Botswana. We aim to show that mobile telemedicine is a reliable method for diagnosing cervical ...
