  • The Relation between Student Satisfaction and Student Performance in Blended Learning Curricula This study reports the interrelationship between students' satisfaction on five aspects of blended learning and their performance. The five aspects are satisfaction on course content, course design, course handbook, online discussion, and assessment. Data from a student evaluation exercise held in July 2010, involving 2719 students from 12 business courses taught in blended format at a Singapore University were used for this study. As part of the evaluation exercise, students had responded on 15-item questionnaire at the end of their course. Validity and reliability of the questionnaire was found to be satisfactory. Path ***ysis was used to test a causal model of the five factors and student grades. In the causal model, satisfaction on course content, design and guide were considered as input elements, satisfaction on online discussion and assessment as process elements, and student grade as output element. The hypothesized model was that the input elements influenced the process elements which in turn determined the output element. The results showed that the three input elements had only an indirect effect on the grades. Of the two process elements; satisfaction on assessment had a direct influence on the course grades but only explained 1.3% of the variance in grades. Satisfaction on assessment was in turn positively and directly influenced by course content, course design and online discussion. These three factors explained 71.3% of the variance in assessment. • Designing Curricula for Fostering Transformative Learning Transformative education is the process of encouraging students to change from being receptacles of knowledge to more meaningful learning through considering diverse viewpoints and questioning their own beliefs, values, and assumptions. Students need a safe environment where they self-reflect and develop hypotheses, test solutions, explore diverse opinions, and become truly engaged in the learning process. Students come to any class with different experiences, prior knowledge, abilities, learning styles, attitudes toward gender and diversity, and personal and social values. The entire person is brought to the learning environment: values and the full gamut of particular life world circumstances, including cognitive dispositions. Whether they realize it or not, students are emotionally, as well as intellectually, committed to certain ideologies and narratives that support particular versions of truth and meaning. By designing a curriculum and classroom that fosters reflection on values and on diverse versions of the truth, transformative learning and personal growth can flourish. This paper presents ideas about how to design the curriculum and the classroom to foster transformative learning in two different content areas. Different pedagogical practices, appropriate to different kinds of courses. One key is focusing on the students' process from identifying topics of particular interest through hypothesis formulation and development of research strategies. One author ...

  • "Learning Is Neurological" part 1 Every teaching strategy, whether curricula-directed or non-curricula-directed, is first a method of instruction; and method of instruction decides ahead of time who will and who will not learn by its implementation. In this first of four videos, Sharon Madsen guides home school parents to put to the test the evidence-based method of instruction used in the Madsen Method®. Have handy the recommended materials and join them as they demonstrate how all students become competent when simultaneously integrating their four language-learning neurological processes, but none becomes competent when merely conditioning his visual and auditory memorization responses. The integrating neurological processes method [Phonetics] supposes that God created mankind in His image and that He specifically designed them with common capabilities to accomplish learning, and He provided witness to this design in His written Divine Revelation. The conditioning visual and auditory memorization responses method [Phonics] is the offspring of evolutionary theorys assumption that mankind is just an evolved animal. This assumption supposes learning is not the ability to understand and choose but is merely a reaction to environmental conditioning. Based on laboratory experiments, this method is used for selecting and controlling the fittest from among visual/auditory stimulus/response conditioned subjects. This is the foundational difference between these two possible methods of instruction. Necessary ...

  • An Agenda for Education Reform in New York - David Steiner In a thoughtful and provocative presentation outlining his vision for education reform, New York State Education Commissioner David Steiner said the current practice of designing curricula to meet a predetermined, standardized outcome "is actually backwards." What the state — and country — needs, he said, is a thoughtful conversation over the question, "What is an educated citizen?" If curricula are developed with that aim in mind, and teachers are properly trained to teach the curricula, then the desired outcome is more likely to be reached, Steiner continued. He called for a balance among curriculum development, teacher training and educational assessments to improve schools.
  • Libya removes former leader from school curricula Libya's current rulers along with local rebels ousted despot leader Muammar Qaddafi from his 4-decade rule last year in a national uprising against his regime. Now, they have also taken him out of school curricula all over the country. During the Qaddafi-era, it was mandatory for schools to display a picture of their leader and his unique political and social ideologies were fundamentals of school textbooks. The Green Book, which contained such ideologies, included the political concept of "Jamahiriya" or "Masses". Qaddafi imagined states with non-existent political parties, claiming that it was complete democracy which encouraged all Libyans to participate in local committees. It was apparent that reality contradicted the concept itself. Certain subjects like history had to be re-written, while others remained as they were, but one subject had to be eliminated completely. 'Jamahiriya education and political culture' taught young children to glorify Qaddafi as a character and as a political leader. Suleiman Khoja, deputy education minister, said that subject has now been replaced with National education which highlights the values of the Feb. 17 revolution such as human rights, political parties and issues of a new Libya. In the April 15 School in the capital of Tripoli, the only remaining evidence of Qaddafi is a picture which is being used as a doormat. The school's name refers to the US airstrike on Qaddafi's compound in 1986. But head teacher Najiba al-Azzabi said the ...

  • Doing or Undoing Gender in Middle School Curricula Leslie Walbridge Mount Holyoke College Senior Symposium 2011 Project Advised by Professor Francine Deutsch The effects teachers have on students' learning about gender is largely unknown; however, teachers often (consciously or unconsciously) include lessons about gender in their curricula. What students learn in school about gender, family, and parenting can impact how they behave as parents later in life. This study examines Middle School courses, such as Family and Consumer Sciences and Comprehensive Health that address parenting and family roles. Through interviews with principals and the teachers of these courses at public Middle Schools in Massachusetts, the study aims to determine what teachers are doing (or not doing) to teach gender through parenting and family roles. Teachers are also asked to send relevant course documents, such as course syllabi, for ***ysis. There are three models that teachers are expected to fall into: gendered, gender neutral, and gender resistant. The gendered model is characterized by teaching that assumes that girls will be primary caregivers and household managers and boys will help to raise children and take care of the home. The gender neutral model teaches boys and girls about all aspects of parenting and family roles but does not teach who should do what. The gender resistant model involves teaching students to critique gender stereotypes and teaching non-traditional parenting styles and family roles. I hypothesize that most ...
