  • the moving earth The Earth is not the immovable centre of the world but a planet in orbit around the sun: this was the claim made by the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus in 1543. To the Christian church this was a heresy that contravened the Word of God. For centuries to come great scientists like Tycho Brahe, Kepler, Galileo and Newton doggedly pursued the notion of a moving earth, and from this epoch-making process there emerged not only a new view of the world but the modern natural sciences.
  • Trade at the Expense of Human Rights Sweden For more news & videos visit ☛ The Swedish Goverment has agreed on a policy that will promote human rights, but a report released by Amnesty International says the guidelines have been ignored. Our correspondent's in Sweden have more. The Swedish government since 2003 has tried to place the needs and living conditions of the poor and the promotion of human rights to the fore in all policies including trade. In 2010 the Swedish Minister of trade Ewa Bjorling and the state owned Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) went to Libya to promote a system of airborne frontier surveillance. The delegation seems to have directly contravened the intent of the Swedish Governments policy. SSC's Bjorn Ohlson speaking to Libya's Minister of Trade [Bjorn Ohlson, Spokesman, SSC]: "We can help you to be firm with the refugee situation along the border and in the Mediterranean." Ewa Bjorling wrote on her blog. "...our Swedish companies can be good role models in difficult countries in which Libya is an example..." A report "Exports at the Expense of Human Rights" released by Amnesty International in Sweden shows that it's difficult to get any information from agencies controlling exports in Sweden. The report cites several examples since 2003 where Swedish trade delegations did not comply with the government policy that includes the promotion of human rights. • Strip Search of 13 Year Old Girl in School SAVANA REDDING was just 13 in 2003 when she was ordered to a nurses office at her Arizona high school for an ordeal that would lead her to a hearing before the US supreme court yesterday. A fellow pupil had told teachers that Ms Redding had given her prescription-strength Ibuprofen a common painkiller in breach of the schools anti-drug rules. Ms Redding denied the accusation but school officials wanted to be sure, so they told her to remove most of her clothes and shake out her bra and underwear to prove she was not hiding anything. No pills were found, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) took up Ms Reddings case, arguing that the schools action was too intrusive and contravened the fourth amendment of the US constitution, which bans unreasonable searches. A federal magistrate dismissed the lawsuit and a federal appeals panel agreed the search did not violate her rights. Last year, however, a full panel of the ninth US circuit court of appeals found the search was an invasion of constitutional rights. ACLU lawyer Adam Wolf told the supreme court yesterday that the school had not searched Ms Reddings locker or questioned any pupils apart from her accuser. There needs to be suspicion that the object is under the clothes, he said. The US justice department argued that strip searches should be out of bounds unless officials have strong, clear evidence that a student is hiding something dangerous in his or her underwear. The court yesterday ...
  • Spanish Flotilla Activists File criminal charges against israel THREE SPANISH nationals who were arrested during an Israeli commando raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in May are to file charges against Israel's prime minister and other officials. They accuse Binyamin Netanyahu, six members of his cabinet and the Israeli navy commander of illegal detention, torture and deportation. Nine Turkish activists died when Israeli forces attacked the flotilla on May 31st. The three Spaniards, who were on the Turkish-owned Mavi Marmara ship, say they were held illegally in international waters by Israeli forces, tortured and forcibly deported to Turkey. They argue their treatment contravened international law. The UN Human Rights Council has appointed three independent experts to investigate whether the raid violated international law. The inquiry team includes Sir Desmond de Silva from Britain, Karl Hudson-Phillips from Trinidad and Tobago and Mary Shanthi Dairiam from Malaysia. Israel has pledged to carry out its own investigation, but critics argue it will not be impartial. Yesterday Israel said it would return the three Turkish vessels seized during the raid. Turkey's foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu said he expects the boats to return "within several days" after technical preparations are completed. The decision to release the boats was taken by Israel's cabinet and is expected to be implemented in the coming days, Israeli public radio reported. Talks about the return of the vessels had been delayed by Israel's ...
  • Today's Iran Election News (June 9, 2009) Today's Iran Election News (June 9, 2009) - Ahmadinejad, Rezai focus on Irans economy in last election debate In the last presidential election debate, broadcast live by Irans state-run television yesterday, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and former Guards Corps commander, Mohsen Rezai, focused on the state of the economy in Iran and avoided arguing over controversial issues to do with Irans foreign policy, citizens rights or civil society. Ahmadinejad began by criticizing the remarks of his rivals, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karrubi, who yesterday called him a liar and dismissed the statistics offered by him on the rate of inflation, as incorrect. Ahmadinejad said that these criticisms were tantamount to slander and contravened ethics and law. He next told his competitor, Rezai, that justice was pivotal to his economic programs and, defending his governments economic programs and performance, he said that his critics were wrong to say that Irans economy was in a bad shape. On the contrary, he said, existing data indicated that Iran had undergone serious growth during his term in office. Rezai countered by saying that Irans average annual rate of inflation is 25 per cent and unemployment rate is 12 percent. He added that all the statistics indicated that the economy was not doing very well and that if the current trend continued, the economic situation would become even worse. Rezai then reiterated that he would pursue his goal of bringing about an economic revolution ...

  • Pitlochry UFO Case While most reports of flying saucers are quickly dismissed by defence chiefs, the previously classified papers show the sighting, which took place near Pitlochry in 1990, was taken extremely seriously. A former MoD official who investigated the case told Scotland on Sunday that despite strenuous efforts they could find no earthly explanation for the craft. Witnesses reported seeing a large, diamond-shaped object hanging in the air next to a RAF Harrier above the A9 at Calvine, north of Pitlochry, on August 4. The UFO is said to have hovered for about 10 minutes before zooming skywards at high speed and disappearing from view. The apparent close encounter of the Caledonian kind was photographed by members of the public whose images appear to show a blurry, diamond-shaped craft next to a jet. Fearing the pictures would spark significant media interest, the MoD decided to bring it to the attention of the Government. A Whitehall official wrote in a memo: "Such stories are not normally drawn to the attention of ministers. "On this occasion, however, the MoD has been provided with six photographic negatives of an alleged UFO... and has been asked for comments almost certainly for inclusion in a forthcoming story." The memo suggested the media should be told that "no definite conclusion had been reached regarding the large diamond-shaped object". It has also emerged the MoD went on to commission a series of line drawings of the object the following year, noting that the ...
  • In 1986, Chris Tait was given a weeks suspension at Macgregor High School in Manitoba for refusing to stand during the Lords Prayer. That prompted a court case that eventually led to an August 13, 1992 ruling by the Manitoba Court of Queens Bench that it is unconstitutional to make prayers mandatory in public schools. At the time, only Manitoba and British Columbia still required prayers in public schools, and an Ontario Court of Appeal decision had recently produced similar results. As part of the Manitoba ruling, Justice Monnin struck down the section of Manitobas Public Schools Act that contravened section 2 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms relating to freedom of conscience and religion.

In an electronic letter mailed to the UN Chief, he has pointed out that the publication of a report from such a panel was illegal as the so called panel had no legitimate powers to perform such an exercise. He noted that the UN Chief had failed to get the approval from the UN Security Council in taking measures with regard to the appointment of the panel. Mr. Rajapakse has highlighted that an International Court cannot act against Sri Lanka regarding war crime accusations as Sri Lanka has not ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Underscoring that Sri Lanka successfully defeated terrorism after thirty years, he said the UN must commend Sri Lanka's success in restoring peace. The Parliamentarian warned that the UN Chief must take responsibility for any catastrophe that might befall on the country from publishing the expert panel report.

Mr Haw, who has been encamped in Parliament Square since June 2001, was filming the protest when arrested. He accused police of using "violent and humiliating force" but Scotland Yard said no complaint was made at the time. Mr Haw, from Redditch, Worcestershire, said: "I was filming the students lying down in the road when one officer stepped forward, as I was walking back, and pushed the camera with his hand. The founder of this party was a man named Taqiyyud-Din an-Nabahaniyy. He unrightfully claimed for himself the status of ijtihad and ignorantly dealt with the issues of the Religion. Consequently, he ***ed and belied the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, and contravened the scholarly consensus (ijma^) in cases pertaining to both the fundamentals and the ramifications of the Religion. • Gen Fonseka - A Commander, A Prisoner, A Legislator Addressess Sri Lanka Parliament 22Apr2010 Former Army Cammander now a political prisoner and an elected Member of Parliament addressed Sri Lanka Parliament for the first time. He said the protection of principles of the state should begin at the Parliament and all in the Parliament should turn their attention to establish democracy in the country. Gen. Sarath Fonseka made his inaugural speech in the Parliament on 22nd April 2010. After months of what General Fonseka has claimed to be unlawful detention, the former key organizer of Sri Lankan armed forces now demands freedom from captivity. General Fonsekas unsuccessful run against Mahinda Rajapaksa in Sri Lankas presidential elections cost him his liberty, as Rajapaska, the remaining president, accused Fonseka of running with militant, anti-government designs. High tensions between Rajapaksa and Fonseka intensified when, following the end of the quarter-century civil war against the Tamil Tigers, Fonseka acted on political aspirations. Fonsekas policies contravened Rajapaksas ethically questionable regime, further alarming the former president and resulting in his efforts to undermine Fonsekas potential to ascend to office. • A Stardust Story The Keegan Family From Coolock Part 1 This is a short story/documentary we produced depicting the affect the Stardust tragedy had on one Family in our community (the keegan's from Coolock). There are countless more stories like theirs in the communities where young people were cut down in their prime by the fire or were hurt and maimed. The fire and injustice of the circumstances surrounding it are best explained here: Please, if you get the time watch this short film and either post it to your status or mail it on to your friends to help the cause for justice and if you have time leave a message here to show support. The building in which the Stardust was held had no planning permission to operate as a night club. It contravened every building regulation and safety standard law at the time and yet it was never visited by the fire safety department while it operated. There was one man sent to check the fire extinguishers who repeatedly told the Butterly owners to refrain from chaining and locking the doors closed. The venue had been visited 6 times in the 3 months leading up to the tragedy for various breaches of law such as overcrowding, locking the doors and faulty wiring and yet the building was never shut down. It was a tragedy waiting to happen and happen it did. Patrick Butterly the owner was personally invited by Jack Lynch to join An Tac (the Fianna Fail fund raising party). He had breakfast with a prominent Fianna Fail TD every morning leading up to the ...
  • EDISON LONG PLAY & KITTEN ON THE KEYS 1921 ZEZ CONFREY Diamond Disc Phonograph THIS MACHINE IS FOR SALE. TA Edison's stunning 1926 novelty was a Long Playing Diamond Disc. While a "short" Edison record side plays a maximum of about 4;50 minutes, the Long Playing Diamond Disc clocked an impressive 40 minutes for a 12" record, 24 minutes for a 10" record. THIS MACHINE IS FOR SALE. check it out at: With this new product, Edison pushed the limits of the technical possible: With 400 lines per ich, the Long Play Disc is actually finer grooved than a modern LP. While innovative in its own way, the Long Playing Disc was a less than successful response to the new electrically recorded discs. While Victor and Columbia listeners could enjoy thumping bass and earsplitting volume in the usual 3 minute format, the Edison Long Play Disc provided a very soft entertainment of usually rather sedate fare, like opera medleys or Dinner Music. Always good at backwards compatibility, Edison offered an uncomplicated conversion kit that turned any standard Diamond Disc Phonograph into a Long Playing machine: Just take out the wormgear drive shaft in the motor, and replace it with the self contained two speed gear. The selection lever clips right onto the bedplate. To ensure ample playing time, only 2 spring Laboratory Models should be converted, as a single spring motor may not last through the duration of a record side. While conversion was easy, and the concept intrigueing for the early adopters, marketing and technology had a number of shortcomings that ...

  • Pro-choice Obama will Prevent more Abortions than Mccain/Republicans Americans who want there to be a country left in which to argue our issues must vote against McCain. As his support for the Bush lies about Iraq shows McCain is hung up on his own version of post-Vietnam traumatic stress disorder. This is a man who would take our civilian culture down in flames and sacrifice it to his sense of death-or-glory military "honor." How do you "win" a wrong war? McCain will make the world more dangerous. You think Bush was a cowboy? Just try McCain. George W. Bush has sanctioned torture, contravened the Geneva conventions, and has lied to the American people about all of it. Bush has destabilized the world. The latest evidence of this is the fact that Russia attacked Georgia. In the climate of Bush's aggression, where is our moral standing to criticize Russia? McCain offers no alternative. These too are life issues. When it comes to the issue of abortion there is another side besides legality/illegality: the nature of our country. What kind of care do we provide to mothers and children? What is our educational system like? Is healthcare available to all? Do our preschool programs and everything from paternal and maternal leave to the economic well-being of our country come first? Or do we argue about abortion rights while we live lives of such supreme selfish decadence that the nature of our country means that no matter what we do with the laws about abortion life will not be valued? The Republican leadership is not pro-life. They are simply ...

Visit our Blog regarding this video at: www.mississaugawatch.ca/blog/?p=6578 VIDEO TRANSCRIPT. Councillor Nando Iannicca: Uh, Councillor Parrish, I follow on your heels. I take some exception to some of the comments that have been made as well. I think its shameful and I think youre all raising a red herring. But be that as it may, as the mover of the motion I really believe that we have no choice whatsoever. Now that the documents have [sic] made public I'm very pleased on behalf of my constituents and Councillor Prentice, clearly I have different constituents than you have. But on behalf of my constituents, two weeks ago when it was brought up, I'm happy to make it a matter of public record that it was I that moved the motion and say, Lets not be quick to judgment. Let's go ask these questions and have this ***ysis come back. That happened today and in-camera. And I want to take a moment to speak to you with something in regards to in-camera. I dont know if Ive ever told you all of any of this but when I speak to my constituents and they ask Whats your role? Whats the most important thing you do? I say to them, by far, the greatest privilege you give me is when you allow me by virtue of this office to go in-camera and make a decision. Because you have no idea what Im doing. Im not accountable to anyone. The minutes arent transcripted [inaudible —properly?]. And under The Act, so much of what we do is done in-camera. So if one is so willing ...

  • Puea Thai Party Open Red Shirt Exhibition in Bangkok Thailand's main opposition Puea Thai Party on Monday opened an exhibition highlighting the pain and struggle witnessed in the recent two-month long anti-government protests in Bangkok. The seven-day exhibition opened, marking the two-month anniversary of the end of violent protests in the capital. Bangkok, the 19th of July 2010: Open until the 25th of July, the exhibition marks the pain and suffering of the Red Shirt protesters who joined the groups' ten-week demonstrations demanding the dissolution of the Abhisit Vejjajiva led government and a call for fresh elections. Held at the Puea Thai Party headquarters, the exhibition is divided into two "white and black" sections. White signifies the preciousness of human life and the human rights that protect that life, while the black represents the corruption, divisiveness and "double-standards" practiced by the government in dealing with the recent political conflicts. Party leader, Yongyuth Vichaidit, reiterated feelings that the governments actions in dealing with the largely peaceful protests contravened human rights laws, stating that the exhibition was opened to remember those killed and the innocent families affected as a result of the violence. He said that he hoped "the exhibition will serve as a reminder to Thai people and I pray that such an incident will not happen again." Red Shirt protests began on March 14th and turned violent in several confrontations between protesters and armed security personnel ordered to ...

  • Kadhafi Qaddafi Ghadafi Khadaffi speaks in English!! Gaddafi has also emerged as a controversial African leader. As one of the continent's longest-serving post-colonial heads of state, the Libyan leader enjoys a reputation among many Africans as a maverick statesman. In February 2009, upon being elected chairman of the African Union in Ethiopia, Gaddafi told the assembled African leaders: "I shall continue to insist that our sovereign countries work to achieve the United States of Africa."[124] Gaddafi is also seen by many Africans as a humanitarian, pouring large amounts of money into sub-Saharan states. Large numbers of Africans have come to Libya to take advantage of the availability of jobs there, despite the weak private sector. His views on African political and military unification have received a relatively lukewarm response from other African governments. On 29 August 2008, Gaddafi held a public ceremony in Benghazi in the presence of over 200 African traditional rulers and kings, in which he proclaimed himself to be "King of Kings of Africa" as part of a grassroots effort to encourage African heads of state and government to join with Gaddafi toward a greater political cohesion.[125] This event was followed on 1 February 2009 by a coronation ceremony in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to coincide with the 53rd African Union Summit, at which he was elected head of the African Union for the year.[126] His January 2009 forum for African kings, however, was cancelled by the Ugandan government (Uganda was to host the forum ...
