The Auriferous Gravels of the Sierra Nevada By JD Whitney Cambridge University Press John Wilson & Son 1880 Origin of Man Conclusion Summing up the discoveries and investigations made by the Geological Survey in California, we have:-- 1. The clear and unequivocal proof, beyond any possibility of doubt or cavil, of the contemporaneous existence of man with the mastodon, fossil elephant, and other extinct species, at a very remote epoch as compared with anything recorded in history. 2. That man, thus proved to be contemporaneous with a group of animals now extinct, did not essentially differ from what he now is in the same region and over the whole North American Continent. 3. That there is a large body of evidence, the strength of which it is impossible to deny ...

  • The doctor who hears voices part 5 The film follows Ruth's unorthodox journey with Rufus as she strives to combat the voice and regain her job. Rufus May is a maverick psychologist. He believes there is no such thing as schizophrenia, that medication can destroy lives and that there's nothing wrong with hearing voices. Rufus is an authority on the subject. He was diagnosed with acute schizophrenia aged 18. In this powerful and thought-provoking film, BAFTA-award winning director Leo Regan, takes a challenging look at how society deals with mental illness, using an innovative mix of contemporaneous documentary footage and dramatised scenes. To protect her anonymity, Ruth is played by BAFTA-nominated actress Ruth Wilson and some details have been changed. With figures suggesting as many as one in four people suffer from mental illness at some point in their lives, the film prompts the question, how far can people who hear voices also continue to live a normal life?

  • The Big Flame 'The Big Flame' was writer Jim Allen's second Wednesday Play (BBC, 1964-70), and his first with director Kenneth Loach. After 'The Lump' (tx. 1/2/1967), about the exploitation of casual labour in the building trade, Allen used his Marxist credentials to depict striking Liverpool dockers enacting a Communist-style system of workers' control. The play was filmed in Loach's accustomed drama-documentary format, honed on previous Wednesday Plays like 'Up the Junction' and 'Cathy Come Home'. Real dockers appear, and the actors speak not well-rehearsed lines but in the disjointed, often incoherent, manner of authentic speech. It is captured on murky 16mm film, giving the picture the same quality as contemporaneous newsreel footage. Only the occasional voiceovers diverge from the apparent objectivity of this fly-on-the-wall aesthetic. That the play is politically partisan cannot be contested. The central character of Jack Regan is, like Allen himself, a self-confessed Trotskyite. In advocating an attempt at workers' control as a beacon to the workingman's emancipation, he becomes the author's mouthpiece. The system of workers' control is portrayed not only as the logical conclusion to industrial instability, but also as entirely successful until violent intervention by the forces of the state. Allen's script is remarkably prophetic; it foreshadowed Britain's massive industrial unrest of 1973-4 and its conclusion prefigures the explosive clash of worker and state in the miners ...

I called it "8BASIC" because everything must clearly fit the 8 digit LED display. The video shows all commands and statements, plus two famous benchmarks vs. contemporaneous 1970's-80's computers. Due to the strong mathematical support of the AM9511 math processor, the BASIC interpreter runs reasonably fast for a 2.5 MHz machine, offering seven significant digits floating-point arithmetic. The De Guzman Family every night sleep in a "pedicab" , a bicycle converted into a three-wheel vehicle, for hire. They do not have any more comfortable place to spend the nights. The Parish of San Pedro Apostol and the people of the village (Barangay 29-A) decided to help the family. The parishioners are sharing construction materials and cash while the villagers offer their labor for free. The De Guzman's are the modern Joseph and Mary looking for a place in new Bethlehem where a contemporaneous Jesus could be born. And the true Christians of today offer the "Holy Family" a decent place for the children of God made unto His own image.

  • The Beatles Break-Up - Interview with Derek Taylor 1970 Watch more: The Beatles reconvened at Harrison's home in Esher in May 1968 to record demos that would ultimately become released in November 1968 as The Beatles. This was released as a double album and both the Beatles and the public alternately referred to it as The White Album. Contemporaneous reviews and retrospective commentary by the Beatles acknowledged that the album reflected the development of autonomous composers, musicians and artists. Lennon and McCartney's artistic venues for the Beatles became more disparate. Harrison continued to develop as a songwriter; unfortunately he had little support from within the band. His composition "Not Guilty" reflected his state of mind during the recording of The Beatles. Starr began to develop and pursue cinematic opportunities during this period. He was also distressed by the increasingly sour and tense atmosphere that was characteristic of the recording sessions. At one point he felt so left out that he decided to leave and went on a break from the band for several weeks. On return he found his drum kit decorated with flowers (which were a gift from George Harrison). As the sessions progressed there was a growing tension in the band. The disquiet was multifaceted in nature, but it was the artistic and personal discord that was most salient. The strain of the sessions took its toll on Geoff Emerick (recording engineer employed by EMI) and more notably Starr. Both left during ...

  • The Most Evil Men In History Caligula PART 1 Surviving sources present a number of stories about Caligula that illustrate cruelty and insanity. The contemporaneous sources, Philo of Alexandria and Seneca the Younger, describe an insane emperor who was self-absorbed, angry, killed on a whim, and who indulged in too much spending and ***.He is accused of sleeping with other men's wives and bragging about it, killing for mere amusement, purposely wasting money on his bridge, causing starvation, and wanting a statue of himself erected in the Temple of Jerusalem for his worship. While repeating the earlier stories, the later sources of Suetonius and Cassius Dio add additional tales of insanity. They accuse Caligula of incest with his sisters, Agrippina, Drusilla and Julia Livilla, and say he prostituted them to other men. They state he sent troops on illogical military exercises. They also allege he turned the palace into a brothel.Perhaps most famously, they say that Caligula tried to make his horse, Incitatus, a consul and a priest.

  • Shawn Brown - Rappin Duke "Rappin' Duke" is a 1984 hip-hop novelty song by Shawn Brown performing as The Rappin' Duke. The conceit of the song is that actor John Wayne (aka "The Duke") is performing the rap. (Wayne had died in 1979.) "Rappin' Duke"'s lyrics pay loving homage to Wayne's cowboy movie persona, boasting that he was the original rapper: "So ya think you're bad with your rap? / Well I'll tell ya, Pilgrim, I started the crap. / When you were in diapers and wetting the sheets, / I was at the Ponderosa, rappin' to the beat." The song's constant refrain is "duh-ha, duh-ha," a parody of Wayne's distinctive laughter, sung to the music's slow beat. The song uses the hip-hop vernacular to refer to contemporaneous rap musicians like Kurtis Blow and Run-DMC, and also parodies the opening to Chaka Khan's 1984 hit "I Feel for You": "Aretha Franklin! Aretha Franklin! / Aretha Franklin! / Let me rock ya, / Let me rock y'aretha Franklin! Let me rock y'aretha Franklin, / that's all I wanna do, 'retha Franklin." Lyrics also allude to Ronald Reagan's presidency. "Rappin' Duke" was widely played in 1985, peaking at 73 on the 1985 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Billboard chart; and also charting on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales for 1985. The song's success led to Brown opening in 1985 and 1986 for such groups as Bobby Brown and Stevie Wonder.[1] "Rappin' Duke" shares the beat from Too Short's "*** Betty".[2]
  • 15. Uncertainty and the Rational Expectations Hypothesis Financial Theory (ECON 251) According to the rational expectations hypothesis, traders know the probabilities of future events, and value uncertain future payoffs by discounting their expected value at the riskless rate of interest. Under this hypothesis the best predictor of a firm's valuation in the future is its stock price today. In one famous test of this hypothesis, it was found that detailed weather forecasts could not be used to improve on contemporaneous orange prices as a predictor of future orange prices, but that orange prices could improve contemporaneous weather forecasts. Under the rational expectations hypothesis you can infer more about the odds of corporate or sovereign bonds defaulting by looking at their prices than by reading about the financial condition of their issuers. On the other hand, when discount rates rather than payoffs are uncertain, today's one year rate grossly overestimates the long run annualized rate. If today's one year interest rate is 4%, and if the one year interest rate follows a geometric random walk, then the value today of one dollar in T years is described in the long run by the hyperbolic function 1/ √T, which is much larger than the exponential function 1/(1.04)T, no matter what the constant K. Hyperbolic discounting is the term used to describe the tendency of animals and humans to value the distant future much more than would be implied by (exponentially) discounting at a constant rate such as 4%. Hyperbolic discounting ...

Among the digs studied: the excavation of the 3000-year-old remains of the towns of Beersheba and Capernaum. Also, there are accidental finds like a shepherd's 1947 discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in a cave. We examine the relationship between archaeology and the bible by discussing such personalities as Sir William Flinders Petrie, whose ballerina attire convinced the Egyptians it would be harmless to let him measure the pyramids. The husband-and-wife team of Eric and Carol Meyers explain how their work on Masada both confirms and contradicts the only contemporaneous historical account of the siege and mass suicide there. Finally, there's a good example of technology at work: electromagnetic images eliminate random digging and a computer model graphically resurrects ancient Jerusalem. Part 1: Part 2: Part 3: Playlist:
  • The doctor who hears voices final part The film follows Ruth's unorthodox journey with Rufus as she strives to combat the voice and regain her job.
