  • Anne Girl by john rah re: Danny Boy (very old Irish tune) Anne Girl - Danny Boy (very old Irish tune) response by john rah i had to drop the danny boy, though i do have an old friend with that name, (hi bill) but i figured i could snap it up a bit with anne girl instead. so this be john ran singing anne girl: the rest of the information i simply took from burfordfiddler1962 ... According to some legends, the tune was possibly composed by Rory Dall O'Cahan in the 1600's. These words were written by Frederick Edward Weatherly in 1913 appearantly. See Barry taylor's contemplator-dot-com website for a greater description of the history of this song...it is awesome!!! Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying 'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so. And if you come, when all the flowers are dying And I am dead, as dead I well may be You'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me. I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

  • Maskun »Maskun« in the Pingelapese language means »don`t see«. Pingelap is a small Island in the Pacific Ocean and belongs to the Federated States of Micronesia. About 240 people live on this atoll. Around ten percent of them suffer from acromatopsia, a genetic colorblindness. In addition the handicapped are only able to see their environment very diffuse and they react very sensitively to bright light. In the book »The Island of the Colorblind«, the author Oliver Sacks describes the life of the inhabitants of Pingelap. His interest is based on the question, if, because of the multitude of the involved, there is an independant culture of colorblind people. Because of the book I felt inspired to travel to Pingelap. I took notice of the perception of the community with my camera. In daily life the affected people are hardly distinguishable from the ordinary ones. Only the permanent twinking of the eyes in a bright environment tells who is suffering from Maskun. In the search for signs, which could visualize the conditions of the people who suffer from this disease, every situation on the island had to be thought over. The differences are elusive, so that the pictures are getting the atmosphere of a fevered quest. Because of the missing explanation, the contemplator is left alone with his impression. The monochromatic pictures are an abstraction of the elsewise colorful south see idyll. Similar is the case of the windows of an achromates house, which are provided with coloured tape ...

  • Blood on your Shirtsleeve (Lestat) Traditional ballad, "Edward" performed by James Yorkston: Lyrics: How came that blood on your shirtsleeve? Oh, dear love, tell me. Oh, it's the blood of the old grey mare That ploughed the fields for me, me, me, Ploughed the fields for me. How came that blood on your shirtsleeve? Oh, dear love, tell me. Oh, it's the blood of the old grey hound That chased the fox for me, me, me, Chased the fox for me. How came that blood on your shirtsleeve? Oh, dear love, tell me. Oh, it's the blood of my sister dear Who came away with me, me, me, Came away with me. And it's 'What will you do now, my love?' Oh, dear love, tell me. I'll set my foot on yonder ship And sail across the sea, sea, sea, Sail across the sea. And it's 'When will you be back, my love?' Oh, dear love, tell me. When the moon sits yonder in the sycamore tree And that will never be, be, be, That will never be. ~~~ I've edited out several verses and instrumental bits for length. • Ritums Ivanovs - Lights On ATP World Tour opening with an art exhibition Art and tennis are being brought together in Doha, Qatar Ritums Ivanovs will present ten new portraits during the Qatar ExxonMobile Open, starting January 3rd, 2011. The subjects of the 2 x 2m paintings are a selection of the world's top tennis players -- Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Robin Soderling, Nikolay Davydenko, Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Fernando Verdasco, Marcos Baghdatis and Ernests Gulbis. Ivanovs has been amongst the most promising Latvian artists for several year and his arrival on the international art scene was confirmed by a successful sale at Sotheby's London in 2009. The portraits that will be presented in Doha this upcoming January, strive to express the vast emotional spectrum of tennis players. The artist's intention has been to capture a moment in time, a fragment of each tennis player's inner world whilst on court. According to the artist, the intense light projected on the tennis court during matches occasionally reveals a more thorough understanding of the personal battles that each tennis player undergoes. Consequently, light is of utmost importance in Ivanovs work. For the artist, light has a metaphysical quality; it brings out the passion, fear and intensity of tennis players. In addition to inviting the spectator to contemplate on the individuality of each player, the portraits, when approached closer, lure the contemplator to plunge into the artist's world ...

  • Artist Talk - Sammy Persons: Commodity, Commotion, Communication Commodity, Commotion, Communication, an installation of new work by Kansas City based artist and Urban Culture Project Studio Resident Samantha Sammy Persons, opened at Charlotte Street Foundation's Urban Culture Project Space, in Kansas City, MO, in conjunction with a Third Friday reception on January 15, 2010. A manipulator of signs more than a producer of art objects, Persons constructs paintings and interactive sculptural environments from materials drawn from her own lifetime and which signal the difference between Art and non- art identified objects—her materials palette includes house paint, vinyl letters, art books and catalogs, bendy straws, , air fresheners, life-sized Hanna Montana Stickers, highlighters, and glitter, among much else. In part, Persons calculated barrage of fragments and collaged images signifies the saturation of text/media in contemporary culture. At the same time, this field of partial and re-contextualized information is meant to position the viewer as an active reader of messages rather than passive contemplator of the aesthetic or consumer of the spectacular. Further, by appropriating traditionally gendered materials, such as 2 by 4s, which she paints bright pink, as well as by building up the surfaces of painting with stickers, which have a long historical correlation to femininity and decoration, the artist seeks to heighten tension between masculine support and feminine façade, destabilizing our standard readings of familiar products ...
  • Raggle Taggle Gypsy This is a tune I used to play a lot about 10 years ago, but haven't really played it much lately. It would be great as a duet and maybe with a fiddle solo to evoke to ride of the Lord through the woods. The details given below about the song were found on This ballad is Francis J. Child Ballad #200 (The Gypsy Laddie). According to Child, printed versions of this ballad probably date back to at least 1720. The gypsies were expelled from Scotland in 1541 and then again in 1609. In 1624 Johnny Faa (a title of prominent gypsies) and seven other men were sentenced to hang and Helen Faa and ten women were sentenced to be drown, but the women's execution was stayed. Around 1788 this ballad became associated with John, the sixth earl of Cassilis and his first wife, Lady Jean Hamilton. Before her marriage Lady Jean was in love with "Johnny Faa, of Dunbar." Years later, after she had borne two children, Johnny Faa returned and persuaded her to elope. Johnny Faa and seven other gypsies (which correlates to the 1624 sentence) were hanged and Lady Jean was banished and confined in a tower built specifically for her imprisonment. Eight heads, effigies of the gypsies, were said to be carved in the stone tower. Lyrics here: More stories and stuff at www.in8
  • Sheila Chandra: Lament of McCrimmon/Song of the Banshee Sheila's official video for this 1989/90 release. It's a somewhat Indianized version of the song "MacCrimmon's Lament." Below is background info and lyrics for the song: According to Hopekirk, this melody was composed in 1745 on the departure of Donald MacCrimmon by his sister. Another legend has it that Donald MacCrimmon had a premonition of his death and composed the tune the night before he died and that his sister later wrote the words. Donald MacCrimmon is said to have been killed in a skirmish in 1746 at the Rout of Moy during the last Jacobite Uprising. The MacCrimmons were famous pipers and the hereditary pipers of the Clan MacLeod. MacCRIMMON'S LAMENT (with appreciation to mkm576) Doun Coullin's peaks the night is sailin' The banshee crouns her note o' wailin' Bit my blue een wi' sorrow are streamin' For him that will never return - MacCrimmon (Chorus) No more, no more, no more forever In war nor in peace shall return MacCrimmon Till daws the great day o doul an burnin' MacCrimmon is home no more returnin' The breeze on the braes is mournfully moanin' The brook in the hallow is plaintively mournin' Bit my blue een wi' sorrow are streamin' For him that will never return -- MacCrimmon (Chorus) Its dirges of woe the sea is sighing, The boat under sail unmov'd is lying; The voice of waves in sadness dying Say, thou art away and ne'er returnest. The words and melody to this song were written by Percy French (1854-1920) after he graduated from Trinity College, during the seven year period he was an engineer in Cavan. Phil was a real person on the Leitridonotuse-Sligo border. He gave parties in his home to help pay the rent.

  • - Vent de Folie Alentejo - South of Portugal, an area where breath a wind which corrodes you the bones. In the few hamlets which punctuate the afflicted countryside, you can meet some Old Men who will speak to you about this Wind which sometimes sows the Madness. The wind such thought, passes, flees and can devastate all on its passage. In front of you, an extent of arid hills, strewn with cork oaks, single shelters of shade, for the Contemplator in search of quietude. Sometimes the man seeks to cling to a thought, causing a chain reaction which will leave the trace of its passage, the such murmur of the wind in the branches of a tree. But take guard! To the next turning of a hill the wind can turn...
  • The World Turned Upside Down The World Turned Upside Down is an old English march, but I do not know the composer (it's an old folk song turned march). This piece was performed January 17, 2009 at the Amarillo Globe News Theatre by the 2009 All-Region (1) Symphonic Band, and was directed by Mr. Barry Hurt. EDIT: I have since found what appear to be the lyrics for this song - credit to garibelon for finding them and pointing me in the right direction!

  • O'Carolan's Sheebeg Sheemore - Si Bheag Si Mhor - Irish tune on accordion by Lorna Pollock Sheebeg Sheemore / Si Bheag Si Mhor / S'beag S'mhor. Composed by Turlough O'Carolan. Lorna Pollock, accordion. from wikipedia: Turlough Carolan, also known as Turlough O'Carolan, (1670 -- 25 March 1738) was a blind, early Irish harper, composer and singer whose great fame is due to his gift for melodic composition. He was the last great Irish harper-composer and is considered by many to be Ireland's national composer. Historical information on this old Irish tune: About the video: Edgar, our cat, was trapped in the room with me, the Roland, the Flip UltraHD on tripod, the Zoom H2 in the basket near my knees, a lamp on a stool, and a jumble of electrical cords. He scurried from tripod to the bed to the Roland's control panel, to the ZoomH2, behind the tripod and then another full circuit. At about 1:16 you'll see Edgar's tail flying through the lower right of the video. Is it any wonder I made a mistake during this recording? Oh, and yes, it's hot here, and the door was closed so I couldn't get the cool air from the evaporative cooler. That and the cat and my hot flashes made for a really fun recording session!
  • 12-string Guitar: Rolling Down To Old Maui The requests are coming in thick and fast now, and yet again I have been asked to sing one I have never come across before. To this end, I often find old songs on a very useful site at the following address:- You can find not only the lyrics, but a piano rendition of the tune and useful information about it too. I do not know how others sing this, but from the version on that site, this is what I have come up with. The chord sequences I have worked out to suit my singing, and you may follow them if you wish or not as the case may be
  • DesignIT competition - The Contemplator's Shelter Positioned in the Brecon Beacons, The Contemplators Shelter captures the true essence of place. The shelter opens itself out to its surround, offering stunning views of its setting. It toys with light and shadow and open and closure bringing awareness of sunlight, rainwater and air; the essential components of growth. However, it is the contemplators room, removed from its surrounding, where the individual can reflect and grow in mind, body and soul.

Well, tell me how? Are you happy now? Are you happy? The uncertainty you had of me Brought clouded shady company The tenderness habitual A seldom-fading ritual You killed the pair Now only one is breathing There's no looking back This time I mean it Are you happy now? Well, tell me how? Are you happy now? Are you happy? [ Happy Now? lyrics from ] Are you happy now? How is it now? Are you happy now? Are you happy? No more leaning on your shoulder I won't be there, no more bother If you feel you just might want me That's too bad, I'm not that easy The contemplator all those years Now you must adhere To your new career of liberation You've been cast all by yourself You're free at last You broke the set Now there's only singles There's no looking back This time I mean it You're by yourself All by yourself You got no one else You're by yourself All by yourself All by yourself

  • The Golden Vanity (Rise Up Singing) Here's the midi file, with lyrics almost identical to those in Rise Up Singing: G - D Em / Am A7 D - G - D Em / Am DG Em / Am DG - There was a ship that sailed upon the Lowland sea And the name of our ship was the Golden Vanity And we feared she would be taken by the Spanish enemy As we sailed upon the Lowland, Lowland, Low We sailed upon the Lowland sea Then up spoke our cabin boy and boldly outspoke he And he said to our captain "What will you give to me If I swim alongside of the Spanish enemy And sink her in the Lowland, Lowland, Low And sink her in the Lowland sea?" "O, I will give you silver and I will give you gold And my own fair young daughter your bonny bride shall be If you'll swim alongside of the Spanish enemy And sink her in the Lowland, Lowland, Low And sink her in the Lowland sea" Then the boy made him ready and overboard sprang he And he swam alongside the Spanish enemy And with his brace and auger in her side he bored holes three And sank her in the Lowland, Lowland, Low And sank her in the Lowland sea

Hereby it communicates with the viewer on public spaces as well as more specific locations of different social groups and embeds his reaction (via sms, email or entry in the forum) into the work and in that way makes him a part of the whole work, which is again seen by the next contemplator.
