  • Security as a System-Level Constraint Google Tech Talks June 4, 2008 ABSTRACT The essence of system-level design is the need to concurrently consider information from multiple engineering domains across multiple subsystems to assess holistic system properties. The systems engineer is responsible for bringing together all facets of a system for evaluation of system-level requirements and to aid in understanding system impacts of local design decisions. System-level security, encompassing issues such as confidentiality of information, integrity and authenticity of information sources, and availability of critical services, is one of many interacting system-level issues that must be addressed. To evaluate system-level security, we must treat security requirements as system-level properties, addressing their satisfaction in the same manner as traditional system-level issues such as power consumption or safety. Specifically, we must provide support for representing system-level security requirements; composing and integrating information from heterogeneous models; and establishing dependencies between models to assess the security health of a complete system. This talk overviews work surrounding the the Rosetta system-level design language with emphasis on efforts to specify, synthesize and verify software defined radios. Speaker: Perry Alexander Dr. Perry Alexander is a Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department and Director of the Information and Telecommunication Technology Center's ...

  • Volume Contact Constraints at Arbitrary Resolution (SIGGRAPH 2010 Paper) We introduce a new method for simulating frictional contact between volumetric objects using interpenetration volume constraints. When applied to complex geometries, our formulation results in dramatically simpler systems of equations than those of traditional mesh contact models. Contact between highly detailed meshes can be simplified to a single unilateral constraint equation, or accurately processed at arbitrary geometry-independent resolution with simultaneous sticking and sliding across contact patches. We exploit fast GPU methods for computing layered depth images, which provides us with the intersection volumes and gradients necessary to formulate the contact equations as linear complementarity problems. Straightforward and popular numerical methods, such as projected Gauss-Seidel, can be used to solve the system. We demonstrate our method in a number of scenarios and present results involving both rigid and deformable objects at interactive rates.
  • "Antigravity" Method 5 of 15, Magnetic Mechanical Constraint-Repulsion or Attraction, Group IIA(i) GROUP II MAGNETIC (PERMANENT & ELECTROMAGNETIC-DC) Group IIA(i) Magnetic Mechanical Constraint-Repulsion or Attraction of like poles Antigravity Method 5 of 15, Magnetic Mechanical Constraint-Repulsion or Attraction of like poles, Group IIA(i)Filmed 1991-1996, 5 of 15 methods of levitating an object known to the author John Iwaszko, edited from the video Antigravity the reality made in 1996. The antigravity method shown in this edit, is referred within the original video as Static Magnetic & Gyroscopical Magnetic Levitation which has now been reclassified by the author as, Magnetic Mechanical Constraint-Repulsion or Attraction of like poles Group IIA (i), which better describes any Static Magnetic-tethered /column supported arrangement using the simple magnetic attraction or repulsion properties of permanent or electromagnetic direct current solenoids. This pseudo-levitation methods shown look impressive but only require magnets and some form of mechanical constraint for stability, and a few common house hold materials to create the shown feats of levitation. If two permanent magnets or electromagnets powered with a direct current (DC) power supply are mechanically constrained along a single vertical axis such as a piece of string, and arranged to repel each other strongly, this will act to levitate one of the magnets or electromagnets above the other. The crowning glory of this opus was the remarkable levitating neon glow lamp, illuminated wirelessly by the high ...
