  • GMAT Prep - Verbal - Reading Comprehension - Tone by Knewton Go to for hundreds of GMAT math and verbal concepts, thousands of practice problems and much more. Knewton GMAT is a GMAT prep course that redefines everything you thought you knew about online learning. Tone is the emotional or feeling associated with a passage, sentence, or word. It is created through the authors' choice of words and especially in the adjectives and adverbs they use to describe things. Here's an example of a sentence with a neutral tone: The king led his procession into the throne room. Here's how adjectives and adverbs can change that tone significantly: The arrogant king haughtily led his grandiose procession into the decadent throne room. The important tone words in this revised sentence are arrogant, haughtily, grandiose, and decadent, which give a negative and over-the-top connotation to the sentence. Similarly, we can change the tone by inserting different tones. The dignified king solemnly led his illustrious procession into the commanding throne room. Just by switching around the adjectives and adverbs, we've just changed the tone of the sentence to a solemn, dignified tone. An author can create tone at the level of an entire passage, a single paragraph, or even just one statement or word.
