  • What is a comet? Did you ever wonder what a comet is? Let's make sense of it with science. To understand comets, you really be out there. In fact, you have to be billions and billions of miles away. Right now, we've just past the planet Pluto's orbit. See that white, icy, crystal-filled mass in front of us? It kind of looks like a cloud. But not like any cloud you'd ever see on Earth. Let's take a closer look. This cloud is filled with billions of massive icy lumps. Some are as big as a giant iceberg. And each is a comet in the making. Every once and a while one of these lumps, like this one here, is knocked off with such force ... ... It's sent into orbit, and flying towards toward the sun... and away we go! As this comet travels closer to the sun, its surface ice begins to boil. Then the sun's radiation -- really powerful stuff! -- sweeps that newly formed gas, along with all sorts of dust and particles, behind this comet's icy head. So it you look behind us, you'll see a fuzzy, vapor-like tall following along as we continue our orbit. It's because of that tail that we, on earth, can spot a comet making it's way across the night sky. Thanks for sharing this time and space with us. And now you know; it all makes sense with science. This has been presented by Bayer Corporation's national education program, Making Science Make Sense.

  • Rendezvous with a Comet From JPL. Comets are important because they represent the leftover bits and pieces from the outer solar system formation process, which took place four and a half billion years ago. As the planets formed, the first thing you got was tiny clumps of dust in the inner solar system, and in the outer system, dust and ice. The comets are what made the cores of Jupiter, Saturn, Ur*** and Neptune. But the planets are so hot that the chemistry changes completely, whereas the comets have remained frozen the entire time so that the chemistry is preserved. Comets are basically made up of a number of different regions; a dirty ice ball, relatively small and black. When it gets near the sun these ices start vaporizing, which forms a atmosphere. And then, when some of these dust particles are blown back away from the sun because of the pressure of sunlight, you form a dust tail and often a gas or ion tail. Comets and asteroids have always gotten bad press. The dinosaurs checked out 65 million years ago because of an asteroid impact. But what we don't hear about, is how important these objects are in terms of bringing the building blocks of life to the early planet. Comets almost certainly brought most of the organic material and much of the water to Earth. In a sense, we wouldn't even be here without comets and asteroids. Scientists like to put objects in boxes. Comets should look this way. Asteroids should look this way. But Mother Nature keeps knocking the boxes over and saying, no ...
  • Time of the Comet Albanian Movie Trailer In 1914, after 450 years under the Ottoman rule, Albania found freedom. To avoid further chaos the British, German and French, decide to impose a German King on Albania - Wilhelm Wied -. The King is warmly received, except by the extremist Muslim rebels and their leader, Kus Babaj, who wants Albania back again under the Turkish Sultan. He writes to the King and asks him to get circumcised, or else they would not accept him and war would be declared. In the mountains of South East Albania five peasants decide to go to war. They have only an old map of the Ottoman Empire, which does not even show Albanian borders. Shestan (the captain) and his men (Cute, Doskë, Tod et Alush) decide to fight for this King to install peace, and walk day and night to find the war, but cannot find it, either because they arrive too late, or they take the wrong route, on account of their old map. On their journey, Shestan, a Muslim, meets Agnes, a young Catholic being brought to a nun's convent by her father. He instantly falls in love with her but his sincere feelings for Agnes and his strong will to fight for his King will not going to be an easy mission for him. Along the journey Shestan and his small group will confront different kind of obstacles until they find their own truth and sense of life.
