  • Pleasley Colliery 1873-1983. The Pleasley area was found to be very rich in coal reserves. The colliery was initially installed with wooden headgear which was obsolete by the turn of the century and so it was planned to replace them in 1901. The replacement with iron headgear was started on a Friday and completed by the Sunday, all within forty eight hours. The colliery at Pleasley was by 1947 working The Top Hard, Dunsil, First Waterloo and Deep Hard seam, producing half a million tons of coal per annum. In 1979 it was proposed to link the mine to the nearby Shirebrook colliery in a seven million pound scheme authorised by the National Coal Board. This was to make it possible to surface Pleasley coal at Shirebrook; but in 1983 the plan was to merge reserves of Pleasley coal reserves with those at Shirebrook. Thus resulting in the closure of this one hundred and ten year old colliery.

  • Knockshinnoch Colliery Disaster 1950 Nearly 60 years ago one of the worst mining accidents in the history of British coal mining occurred in the Ayrshire village of New Cumnock. For several tense days in September 1950 the worlds media descended on the small Ayrshire mining village. The world paused with baited breath as rescuers battled bravely against all odds to reach the 129 men trapped deep underground when a field above where they were working caved-in, flooding the mine workings with thick liquid peat, cutting off all means of escape. This is a truly remarkable story of how ordinary men worked tirelessly in a race against time and the forces of nature to achieve one of the most dramatic and remarkable rescues ever attempted.

  • Valerie by The Hackney Colliery Band feat. drunk Amy Winehouse at Jazz Cafe Camden Valerie by The Hackney Colliery Band feat. drunk Amy Winehouse at Jazz Cafe Camden on 10th September 2010. Just enjoyed the excellent nine piece brass band at the Jazz Cafe in Camden Town. The Hackney Colliery Band played an awesome set of tuba-tastic numbers including Rock your Body by Justin Timberlake, I'm coming Out by Diana Ross, Toto by Africa and an almost mariachi version of *** on Fire by Kings of Leon. After some comments about a drunk Amy Winehouse she appeared by the stage. She was a typically sozzled Amy turned up falling about the place and somehow achieved a drunk karaoke effort in pulling off a cover of the Zutons classic made famous by the Mark Ronson version. Coincidentally The Haggis Horns who played the brass on Amy/Mark's version of Valerie played at the same venue a few days ago. I caught some of her efforts. Not the greatest performance. She really ought to *actually* go to rehab.

  • Miners Leaving Pendlebury Colliery (1901) Despite knowing that there has been a black presence in the UK since Roman times, it's still a shock and a pleasure to see a black miner emerge from a group of workers at Pendlebury Colliery. His fleeting appearance, smiling alongside his workmates, may look staged and it has been suggested he was given a clean shirt show up his skin colour. But this film is not about him - he's just one of many men who walk past before a large billboard advertising a forthcoming passion play. The black miner's appearance in the nation's collective family album of cinema is incidental but important. It records his presence in Edwardian Britain giving us and future generations the possibility to muse who he was and how he got there. (Karen Alexander) Thisfilm is part of the Mitchell and Kenyon collection - an amazing visual record of everyday life in Britain at the beginning of the twentieth century. Beowulf - Temple KnightFinal Fantasy Tactics (ファイナルファンタジータクティクス, Fainaru Fantajī Takutikusu?) is a tactical role-playing game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the Sony PlayStation video game console. It was released in Japan in June 1997 and in the United States in January 1998. The game combines thematic elements of the Final Fantasy video game series with a game engine and battle system unlike those previously seen in the franchise. In contrast to other 32-bit era Final Fantasy titles, Final Fantasy Tactics uses a 3D, isometric, rotatable playing field, with bitmap sprite characters. The game is set in a fictional kingdom called Ivalice, which has just ended its war with neighboring kingdom of Ordalia. The story follows Ramza Beoulve, a young cadet who finds himself thrust into the middle of a conflict, where two noble factions are coveting the throne of the kingdom. While the war was caused by a conflict of succession, Ramza was exposed to a plot that involved the kingdom's dominant religious organization. A spin ...
