  • Science as a Stealth Religion David Sloan Wilson talks about 'Stealth religions', these being organised systems of thought and practice which, whilst they may not have any of the trappings of a formal religion nevertheless codify and arrange the behaviour of their adherents. He cites some versions of atheism as an example of this and elsewhere I have come across Alcoholics Anonymous and Ayn Rand's 'Objectivism' being similarly named. According to Sloane Wilson, these systems form and persist because they represent what he calls 'practical reality' for those who are subject to them; a reality which is based on social interactions and group identification ultimately grounded in evolutionary processes. This is in contrast with what he calls 'factual reality' which is the empirically-derived world of (notionally) disembodied and value-free facts, laws and theories. I'm just wondering to what extent it makes sense to talk about science (or possible scientism) as occasionally operating as a stealth religion. Obviously it does not make the same counter-factual truth claims that real religions do but it could be said to set the terms of what is considered valid topics of discussion or of appropriate languages in which discussion might take place. Carolina Zambrano Barragán - Undersecretary of Climate Change at Ministry of Environment, Ecuador. Interviewed by Joan Russow - Global Compliance Research Project. Filmed by Cory Morningstar - Canadians for Action on Climate Change. Highlights: Includes thoughts and comments regarding the Ecuadorian Assembly Approving Constitutional Rights for Nature. The mainstream media barely even covered it ... this amazing feat was considered #18 of the top 25 censored stories of 2008. The Ecuadorian Constitutional Assembly has changed the world. Ecuador has become the first country in the world to codify a new system of environmental protection based on rights. They have approved legislation that has transformed nature and ecosystems in Ecuador from mere things into entities with legal rights to exist and flourish. It's the leadership we so desperately need in the face of accelerating climate change. Other countries should follow such strong leadership. To take the idea of individual human rights and give them to entities and systems that are hard to define either as individual or human is revolutionary. An idea whose time has come. On July 7, 2008 the 130-member Ecuador Constitutional Assembly, elected countrywide to rewrite the country's Constitution, voted to approve articles that recognize rights for nature and ecosystems. On September 28, 2008, the people of Ecuador voted by an ...
  • Changes to JavaScript, Part 1: EcmaScript 5 Google Tech Talk May 18, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Mark Miller, Waldemar Horwat, and Mike Samuel. Slides for this talk are available from google- Today's JavaScript is a decent language for writing small scale scripts. But even for beginners, it has too many minefields between what beginners learn and what they need to know. And JavaScript is now increasingly used for serious software engineering projects -- straining to carry a load it was not designed for. After 10 years, the world of JavaScript standards is moving again. The next version, EcmaScript 5, is in "final draft standard" status with implementations about to appear. The "Harmony" agreement sets the direction for future versions beyond EcmaScript 5. The "Secure EcmaScript" working group is working towards an EcmaScript 5 subset suitable for the security needs of inline gadgets, mashups, and more. In this first talk, we'll explain changes in EcmaScript 5, the problems they're meant to address, the de-facto standards they codify, and how these changes are likely to affect web applications. Waldemar Horwat has been involved with JavaScript standardization and implementation since the 1990's when he was working on Netscape's implementation. He is a former editor of the standard and wrote parts of the existing ECMAScript Edition 3 standard. He participates in the ECMA TC39 committee and is the Google representative at the ECMA General Assembly. Mark S. Miller is a research scientist at Google ...
  • 3 Reasons The New Financial Regs Won't Fix Anything The financial reform bill currently working its way toward President Barack Obama's desk for signing is being touted as the biggest overhaul of the banking and investment sectors since the Great Depression. But the new regs won't be any more effective than the ones they replace in fixing anything or preventing the next major panic for at least three reasons. 1. New Watchdog, Old Tricks They create a new watchdog consumer agency designed to protect consumers from their own supposed stupidity. You'll now be facing fewer choices when it comes to getting credit cards, loans, and other basic financial transactions. 2. Never Too Big To Fail They replace "Too Big to Fail" with... "Too Big to Fail." One of the reasons why major financial institutions played Russian Roulette with the economy was because they were betting they would get bailed out. Which is precisely what happened. The new rules codify the idea that the government will make sure certain institutions can never fail. And if you think the big boys won't game that system, then you don't understand how well Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, et al have come through the current meltdown. 3. Housing Bubble Trouble The financial crisis was set into motion by government policies that encouraged people to buy homes they couldn't afford at prices that were unsustainable. Between desperate attempts to keep people in houses and to keep interest rates below an effective rate of zero, the government continues to pour more money down the ...

In short, members of the military are always expected to evade capture, resist while a prisoner, and escape whenever feasible.
  • Guillaume de Machaut - Douce dame, tant come vivray Douce dame, tant come vivray by Guillaume de Machaut performed by Gothic Voices Guillame de Machaut (c.1300 1377) was a Medieval French poet and composer and one of the first for which there is a large amount of information regarding his life and works. This is due, in part, to the volumes of m***cripts he had produced which contain only his own works. He spent 17 years serving in the court of Jean de Luxembourg and also served as a canon in the cathedral at Reims where he witnessed the arrival of the Black Plague and the siege of Reims by the English. Many of these events can be seen in Machauts often auto-biographical poetry, which frequently deals with aspects of courtly life and love. Machaut's vast oeuvre of poems had a far-reaching influence, helping to codify many of fixed forms and achieving the admiration of Geoffrey Chaucer, among others. His music also had a wide influence and he is known today as the most significant composer of the ars nova, during which he produced numerous lais, ballades, rondeaux, virelais, motets, and the first Mass Ordinary by a single composer that was conceived as a unit. This mass, the Messe de Nostre Dame, marks the beginning of a long tradition of cyclic masses that came to fruition during the Renaissance and continues to the present day. This recording is from the album "The Unknown Lover: Songs of Solage and Machaut" by the Gothic Voices.
  • The EU and stem cell research X.TV -- Many commentators say that the lack of common rules are obstructing research, denying patients access to the most advanced treatment. In addition uncontrolled experiments can pose a danger to patients. The European Commission has proposed an attempt to codify rules and guidelines in the area. The Parliament's Environment Committee adopted a report on the matter on 31 January - a report authored by Slovak MEP Miroslav MIKOLÁŠIK (PPE-DE) . The Committee backed a draft EU regulation designed to encourage the development of gene therapy, cell therapy and tissue engineering. However, MEPs are demanding guarantees about the safety of the products and techniques used and would also like to see more support for smaller companies working in this field. The report recommends the following: - Creating common rules for advanced therapy. - Establishing a new Committee in the European Medicines Agency to allow centralised evaluation, authorisation, supervision and monitoring. - Ensuring a high level of health and safety. The report is scheduled for first reading at Parliament's part-session 23-26/4/2007

Senator David Hann offered an amendment which would have allowed senators to vote to put the payment shifts the state made in the previous year into law, a measure which the school districts around the state have been clamoring for. In a technique used so as not to actually have to take a vote on an issue which majority members may not appear in a favorable light the amendment was questioned on its germaness, or relevance. The majority party found the amendment to be not germane and quickly scuttled the idea so as not to have to take a vote against an issue their school districts had been asking for.
  • FCC Debates Net Neutrality -Full video FCC press release October 22, 2009: In the next chapter of a longstanding effort to preserve the free and open Internet, the Federal Communications Commission is seeking public input on draft rules that would codify and supplement existing Internet openness principles. In addition to providing greater predictability for all stakeholders, the Notice is aimed at securing the many economic and social benefits that an open Internet has historically provided. It seeks to do so in a manner that will promote and protect the legitimate needs of consumers, broadband Internet access service providers, entrepreneurs, investors, and businesses of all sizes that make use of the Internet. The Commission has addressed openness issues in a variety of contexts and proceedings, including: a unanimous policy statement in 2005, a notice of inquiry on broadband industry practices in 2007, public comment on several petitions for rulemaking, conditions associated with significant communications industry mergers, the rules for the 700 MHz spectrum auction in 2007, specific enforcement actions, and public en banc hearings. During this time period, opportunities for public participation have generated over 100000 pages of input in approximately 40000 filings from interested parties and members of the public. The process todays Notice initiates will build upon the existing record at the Commission to identify the best means to achieve the goal of preserving and promoting the open Internet ...

MORE VIDEOS FACEBOOK TWITTER ITUNES Crime is the breach of rules or laws for which some governing authority (via mechanisms such as legal systems) can ultimately prescribe a conviction. Individual human societies may each define crime and crimes differently. While every crime violates the law, not every violation of the law counts as a crime; for example: breaches of contract and of other civil law may rank as "offences" or as "infractions". Modern societies generally regard crimes as offences against the public or the state, distinguished from torts (offences against private parties that can give rise to a civil cause of action). When informal relationships and sanctions prove insufficient to establish and maintain a desired social order, a government or a state may impose more formalized or stricter systems of social control. With institutional and legal machinery at their disposal, agents of the State can compel populations to conform to codes, and can opt to punish or attempt to reform those who do not conform. Authorities employ various mechanisms to regulate (encouraging or discouraging) certain behaviors in general. Governing or administering agencies may for example codify rules into laws, police citizens and visitors to ensure that they comply with those laws, and implement other policies and practices which ...

  • Youtube Poop: RU CODIFICATIN' In law, codification is the process of collecting and restating the law of a jurisdiction in certain areas, usually by subject, forming a legal code. The first civilization to codify its laws was ancient Babylon. The first real set of codified laws, the Code of Hammurabi, was compiled circa 1760 BC by the Babylonian king Hammurabi, and is the earliest known civil code. Besides religious laws such as the Torah, important codifications were developed in the ancient Roman Empire, with the compilations of the Lex Duodecim Tabularum and much later the Corpus Iuris Civilis. These codified laws were the exceptions rather than the rule, however, as during much of the ancient Roman laws were left mostly uncodified. The first permanent system of codified laws could be found in China, with the compilation of the Tang Code in CE 624. This formed the basis of the Chinese criminal code, which was then replaced by the Great Qing Legal Code, which was in turn abolished in 1912 following the Xinhai Revolution and the establishment of the Republic of China. The new laws of the Republic of China were inspired by the German codified work, the Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch. A very influential example in Europe was the French Napoleonic code of 1804. Another early system of laws is Hindu law framed by Manu and called as Manu Smriti. The use of civil codes in Islamic Sharia law began with the Ottoman Empire. Codification in common law and civil law jurisdictions Contrary to popular belief, the common ...

  • TDMA The green movement. Sustainability. The emergence of locavores. These monikers identify a global effort that has gained momentum in its mission to protect the environment. The impulse is a good, if belated, one. Earths precious resources continue to be depleted in ways too numerous to document in a short synopsis. And yet, despite the primarily American urge to codify all such initiatives, and long before such initiatives took root, there were abuelos. It is from these abuelos, their old ways of living, that the documentary film, La tierra de los abuelos, takes its sustenance. With little fanfare, and without need to name their practices and belief systems, the abuelos, beginning with Valentin Valdez (a Santa Fe native of eighty-three years and a World War II veteran), present oral histories that form the heart of this Chicano postcolonial documentary. These historias de la gente, the common people, seek to capture and preserve old farming techniques, the rearing and care of animals, construction methods, and the preparation of foods and common remedios. These ways offer an organic, indigenous template for re-creating sustainable communities by showcasing rare, rich stories about traditional ways of life before they all but disappear. • Obama & Abortion / The Freedom of Choice Act / His Intentions Revealed / Pro-Life Video Obama & Abortion / The So-Called Freedom of Choice Act Video. All text, images and video clips from Fair Use or the public domain. A year ago today, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) stood before Planned Parenthood (PP) and vowed that his first priority as president would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). According to NARAL Pro-Choice America, FOCA would "codify Roe v. Wade into law and guarantee a woman's right to choose in all 50 states." On April 7, 2007, when Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Rep. Jerry Nadler (DN.Y.) introduced the Act in Congress, they knew that it was far more than a government "guarantee" of abortion. If enacted, FOCA would obliterate hundreds of state laws that protect women, parents, children, and health care workers, while forcing taxpayers to foot the bill for millions of abortions. It would overturn commonsense laws like parental notification, conscience protections, abortion waiting periods, informed consent, and regulations for women's health. In essence, FOCA would tilt the table for abortion. Obama's support of FOCA hits particularly close to home among African-Americans, whose women and children have been preyed upon for decades by the eugenically minded Planned Parenthood. This connection has been pointed out again to the NAACP, who held their 99th annual conference with a sizeable pro-life presence. Together with Dr. Alveda King, niece of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., black leaders from across the country demonstrated at the ...

The accompanying book to the Table explains the motivations, history and reasons for its creation, as well as to give scientific explanations for the protocols and procedures that were adopted in devising the Table. Amongst various factors, the Table takes the idea of Mendeleyev, to group all the atomic elements in systematic order and does the same with the universe of religious and philosophical teachings. It details the core data and information concerning each of the known spiritual and scientific systems of thought, knowledge and belief according to one of 168 separate entries on the Periodic Table. • Digital 8-Bit data codifier board simulation designed by Magnus - EXPLANATION OF THE VIDEO - An electronic 8-bit data codifier. It's algorythm it's not very powerfull, but it's just a functional prototype simulation on my computer. This circuit is based on some 74xx integrated circuits like decade counters, BCD to 7 segments decoders, and a 6264 static RAM memory. The circuit codifies an 8-bit data input (this time simulated by some switches), and then you can select the memory region where you want to store the codified data and codify it by presing the correct button (SET). Then, you have to activate another 8 switches to let the circuit read the memory data, and then you can read the codify data by presing the READ switch. All numbers are represented in hexadecimal. The weird symbols in the codified data are courtesy of the BCD to 7 segments decoders, and they are part of the codified data after all because they mean values higher than 9 (15 (1111, F) equals 7 segments display off).
  • Maimonides, Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon - #33 If Rashi is one of the pillars of the Jewish world, the other is Maimonides, Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, the great sage and person of the Jewish Middle Ages. Born in 1135 in Cordova, Spain, he suffered exiled when the fanatical Islamic sect, the Almohads, took over and forced all the Jews to either convert to Islam or leave the country. Maimonides flees to Fez, North Africa but there he is also tracked by the Almohads. He comes to the land of Israel, but he is warned that the Crusaders are out to kidnap him. Finally he settles in the city of Fostad (old Cairo), in Egypt. Maimonides is an astronomer, a mathematician, a philosopher, a doctor, he's someone who knows pharmacology and he's the greatest Torah scholar of his age. And he sets down to formally codify all of Torah in volumes that will be accessible to all. He writes a commentary to the Mishnah in Arabic. He writes the Mishnah Torah which is 14 volumes and codifies everything that exists in Jewish law and tradition. It's written unbelievably beautifully in Hebrew with a clarity and organization that almost defies belief. He also wrote another book in Arabic called The Guide to the Perplexed, which is a philosophical treatment of Judaism, and he has a lot of Aristotle in it, in which he agrees with and doesn't agree with. It's a book that's written literally to guide people who were troubled and wanted to know how to regain their faith through philosophy. We must remember that at that time philosophy ...
  • Architecture :: Cities Hidden Dimensions The build environment changes. The process of it can not be lead by a programmatically language that defines how elements, functions and forms have to be positioned in space and time. We project but we can not predict an architecture city language. A sociological, a religion, a political and a self-organizing environment are the protagonists of this complex game. These actors move in different patterns through our build environment in today's society. They follow certain rules able to present the city as a complex urban game. Each pattern becomes a complex logbook that we have to read and to understand in order to interact with the different game members: the city and the citizens. The results of this dynamic play reveal a new interaction and let us change the urban cityscape. Today's rules are set to play the game. The players profit them making strategies but the sum lies in the hidden dimension. Each game gives a stimulation to let us act, react or to move in a certain direction. As we codify the information, we take action and change position through space and time. Despite the described rules we make our personal interpretation of what our private sky is all about in today's changing cityscape.
