Recruiting Dance. Moderato, ben ritmato II. Relaxation. Lento go here to see the last movement: Filmed at the ORTF, Paris, 03/12/72 by Eric Tishkoff: What started in August 1938 as a casual conversation between József Szigeti and Benny Goodman very quickly turned into a significant chamber work by one of the world's leading composers, Béla Bartók (1881-1945). Szigeti, a pre-eminent violinist of the time, sent the request to Bartók-although, it was the world-renown jazz clarinetist Goodman who officially commissioned (ie, paid for) the work. In his letter, Szigeti requested a duo for clarinet and violin with piano accompaniment, consisting of two contrasting movements, 6-7 minutes in duration, with cadenzas for both the clarinet and violin. Szigeti was probably expecting a short, flashy show-tune, in which case, he got much more than he bargained for. Janos Karpati writes (Bartok's Chamber Music, Stuyvesant, NY, Pendragon Press, 1976, p. 476) "Despite the commission, Bartók composed not what is known as a concert piece, but a chamber-music work, a worthy cousin of the string quartets and sonatas, which in both its material and structure follows the laws of chamber-music form." Contrasts is a three movement work nearly three times the duration of the original request. The music is an amalgam of abstracted Hungarian folk music ...

Aside from his soloist career, he is also principal clarinetist of the LSO. Here he partners his LSO colleagues in a concert performance of Mozart's ever popular masterpiece. As everyone knows, Mozart originally wrote it for Anton Stadler and his basset clarinet and this fact was only rediscovered a few decades ago. There has been a trend in recent years, in trying to keep with historical authenticity, to play the restored version for basset clarinet, but here we hear it in the usual adapted version for the standard clarinet. • Creole Clarinets - Noites Cariocas - JazzAscona 2008 Creole Clarinets - "Noites Cariocas" at the New Orleans & Classics Festival in Ascona, Ticino, Switzerland Performing dates: 29/6 - 5/7 Style: A tribute to Choro music / Traditional Jazz France / Germany / Switzerland / England / Sweden The project "Noites Cariocas" was born through an initiative of clarinetist/saxophonist Thomas L'Etienne, one of the main exponents in Europe of New Orleans Jazz and a great lover of Brazilian music. "Noites Cariocas" pays homage to "Choro" music, a genre developed around 1870 in Cidade Nova, a quarter of Rio de Janeiro inhabited prevalently by blacks, and, like jazz for African American culture, this music represents a synthesis between European dance music (polka, waltz, mazurka) and African rhythms. The connection between this music, jazz, and the culture of New Orleans is therefore very intense. Jazz and Choro have in common, too, their 'democratic' character: rather than placing the accent on the virtuosity of individual instruments, both have at their center the group's harmonic thrust. And, just as there are jam sessions in jazz, spaces for freedom and improvisation, in Choro music the "rodas" have played an important role: social events in which musicians play together, learning from one another. This summer, with the rhythms of "Noites Cariocas", it will be impossible not to tap one's foot under the stars of Ascona...
  • DAVE TARRAS - Chusen Kala Mazel Tov "Chusen Kala Mazel Tov" (Congratulations, Bride and Groom) Jewish Wedding Song (Klezmer, Instrumental) with Abe Ellstein's Orchestra ---------------------------- Dave Tarras, 1897-1989, born Dovid Tarraschuk in Ternivka, (a village in Teplytskyi Raion, Vinnytsia Oblast, Ukraine), possibly the most famous 20th century klezmer musician. He is known for his long career and his very skilled clarinet playing. Son of a klezmer trombonist and Badkhn, he grew up playing a variety of instruments and surrounded by the music. He was conscripted into the tsar's army in 1915, but his talents as a musician kept him out of the trenches. In 1921 he emigrated to New York City, where worked in a garment factory for a time. Eventually he found that he could make money as a musician, and found a place as a clarinetist in many of New York's klezmer ensembles. In addition to Jewish music, he also recorded Greek, Polish, and Russian tunes. His reliability and skill saw him play for many years after that other famous klezmer clarinetist, Naftule Brandwein, died, and he was certainly the most famous one from the mid-1930s to the late 1950s. He also mentored many younger klezmer musicians who went on to become famous, such as Andy Statman.

  • Mozart Clarinet Quintet on period instruments Part 1 k. 581 Part 2 MOZART CLARINET CONCERTO The academy of ancient music chamber ensemble Antony Pay Basset Clarinet Wolfgang Mozart's Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, K. 581, was written in 1789 for the clarinetist Anton Stadler. The composer indicated that the work was finished on 29 September 1789. This quintet is sometimes referred to as the Stadler Quintet; Mozart so described it in a letter of April 1790. It consists of four movements: 1. Allegro in A major and common time 2. Larghetto in D major and 3:4 time 3. Menuetto in A major and 3:4 time - Trio I in A minor - Trio II in A major 4. Allegretto con Variazioni in A major and common time The first movement sets the mood for the entire piece. It has beautiful moving lines in all of the parts and in the second half there is a virtuoso run that is passed throughout the strings, based on material from the second section of the exposition.
