  • Cool Stuff in the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, France The figure with the enlarged liver is a reminder, drink in moderation! Alsace was Germany, France, the Rhineland, all mixed up. It is fully French now, and I seem to have roots there. Colmar is a fine city, with everything to please! The Unterlinden Museum does close for lunch, in civilized Euro fashion, but keep your ticket stub and go back after lunch and a siesta! You will need a full day to see this place, and off-season, such as March 26, 2010 when I was there, is ideal. Every kind of art, furnishing and object can be found here. This 82 year old woman who had had severe ascites and previously in the paracentesis procedure had drained 6 liters of ascites liquid, at endoscopy two giant ulcers were found. Liver cirrhosis is frequently associated with complicated peptic ulcer disease. It has been showed that peptic ulcer is more frequent in patients with liver cirrhosis, is associated with the severity of cirrhosis, and occurs without upper abdominal pain in up to 70% of patients and with complications in 29%. This giant ulcer is found at the lesser curvature of the gastric body, macroscopically has suspected, some parameters of malign but the biopsies were negative, however in six week will need a new follow up endoscopy that showed that the ulcer of the antrum is in the scar phase as well as the scar of the ulcer of the body., a six week with proton pump inhibitor (PPI) treatment.

  • The Liver Part Two Val Saxion Roger Bezanis Independent Shaklee Distributor. Contact 678-995-7458 - Richard Cooper What is liver disease? Liver disease is any disturbance of liver function that causes illness. The liver is responsible for many critical functions within the body and should it become diseased or injured, the loss of those functions can cause significant damage to the body. Liver disease is also referred to as hepatic disease. Liver disease is a broad term that covers all the potential problems that may occur to cause the liver to fail to perform its designated functions. Usually, more than 75% or three quarters of liver tissue needs to be affected before decrease in function occurs. Thus liver disease can occur. What are the causes of liver disease? Alcohol abuse: Alcohol abuse is the most common cause of liver disease in North America. Alcohol is directly toxic to liver cells and can cause liver inflammation, referred to as alcoholic hepatitis. In chronic alcohol abuse, fatty accumulation (steatosis) occurs in liver cells causing the cells to malfunction. Cirrhosis: Cirrhosis is a late-stage liver disease. Scarring of the liver and loss of functioning liver cells cause the liver to fail. Drug-induced liver disease: Liver disease cells may become temporarily inflamed or permanently damaged by exposure to medications or drugs. Some medications or drugs require an overdose to cause liver injury while others may cause the damage even when taken in the appropriately prescribed ...
  • Laparoscopy -- perforated DU and septic shock A 40 years old female recently diagnosed with Child C liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension was brought to the Emergency Department with an acute abdomen; she was in septic shock, anaemic (Hb 82), acidotic, hypotensive, tachycardic, tachypnoeic, hypoxemic, dehydrated, anuric, febrile, jaundiced (Brb 160), coagulopathic (INR 2.1), hypoalbuminemic (18); LFT's were elevated; on examination she was lethargic and had a grossly distended abdomen. She was rushed to the operating theatre and underwent a laparoscopy ( a Visiport was used through a right paraumbilical approach to create the pneumoperitoneum and three 5mm trocars to complete the procedure laparoscopically): free fluid, collections and fibrinous deposits were found throughout the abdomen; the large and small bowel was grossly distended; the liver was rigid with cirrhotic appearance and the veins in the falciform ligament were of impressive size; the gallbladder was also distended. After aspiration of the fluid and drainage of collections, the gallbladder was lifted and loops of small bowel were removed from early adhesions in the right upper quadrant; a punched out perforation was identified on the anterior wall of the duodenum. This was sutured with a figure of eight 2/0 Vicryl and patched with omentum; the abdomen was further lavaged and drained. The patient condition improved immediately and in spite of low Hb she did not required postoperative transfusion; she required a tracheostomy to be extubated, but a week ...

  • Serious Liver Disorder with Videx FDA is notifying healthcare professionals about cases of a rare but serious complication, non-cirrhotic portal hypertension, in patients taking Videx (didanosine) or Videx EC, to treat HIV infection. Clinicians should monitor patients on Videx for portal hypertension and esophageal varices. They should also be aware that Videx has been associated with other hepatic effects, including lactic acidosis, hepatomegaly with steatosis, and liver failure. FDA believes that for certain patients, the clinical benefits of Videx continue to outweigh its risks, and that the decision to use the drug must be made on an individual basis. • Thermal Ablation for the Treatment of Abdominal Tumors Watch video protocols on JoVE - . Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is a scientific journal publishing video articles on biological experiments filmed at leading research institutions. JoVE is the first video journal indexed in PubMed. To see more of this protocol go to Thermal Ablation for the Treatment of Abdominal Tumors This video protocol was filmed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Percutaneous thermal ablation is an emerging treatment option for many tumors of the abdomen not amenable to conventional treatments. During a thermal ablation procedure, a thin applicator is guided into the target tumor under imaging guidance. Energy is then applied to the tissue until temperatures rise to cytotoxic levels (50-60 °C). Various energy sources are available to heat biological tissues, including radiofrequency (RF) electrical current, microwaves, laser light and ultrasonic waves. Of these, RF and microwave ablation are most commonly used worldwide. During RF ablation, alternating electrical current (~500 kHz) produces resistive heating around the interstitial electrode. Skin surface electrodes (ground pads) are used to complete the electrical circuit. RF ablation has been in use for nearly 20 years, with good results for local tumor control, extended survival and low complication rates1,2. Recent studies suggest RF ablation may be a first-line treatment option for small hepatocellular carcinoma and renal-cell carcinoma3-5. However, RF ...
