The chromate ion is a hexavalent chromium with 4 oxygens around it. The dichromate ion is formed when one of these oxygens on the chromate acts as a bride to another chromium atom with 4 total oxygens (one being the bridge). The trichromate ion is formed in a similar way with simply another chromium group on there. SHIP HORN , FERRY HORN & BIG TUGBOAT HORN (Leslie Tyfon A-300-110-MB) This one of two Leslie A-300 ship horn that I own. This came from a private horn collector from texas. These are popular on older big tugs and ferries.This is an older A-300 and it is all bronze. A rare horn compared to its steam counterpart the Leslie Steam Tyfon 300. I replaced 2 of the 3 bronze diaphragms that were cracked in the middle. The Bronze diaphragms were very very expensive! This thing had 5 different colored paint coats and a couple of toxic zinc chromate primer before restoration. The last coat of paint I had to strip off was a tought epoxy type paint. I then took the horn to a "Soda Blasting " facilty because of the toxic nature of the zinc chromate primer. It took the primer off without pitting the horns. Then the horn had to go through a few days of " pickling" in a home brewed chemical soak. It took me a total of 72 hours of manual labor not including the wait for the paint stripper to work or the "picking" process. I will post videos once I finish fabrication of the mounting flange so that I coould supply air to the horn. This thing is going to be very loud since it can handle up to 300 psi of air! When hydrogen peroxide is added in the presence of heat, the distinctive yellow color of the chromate ion can be seen. After cooling, the addition of concentrated sulfuric acid further oxidizes the chromium, yielding orange dichromate ions.
