  • Charcoal Making Industry A visit to the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve will not be complete without stopping by one of the many nearby charcoal kilns. Over 348 charcoal kilns operate in the Matang mangroves, making the Matang mangroves the country's largest producer of mangrove charcoal. Making charcoal is time consuming and hard work. After the mangrove trees or bakau minyak are harvested from the 40466ha forest reserve, they are cut into roughly 1.6 metre logs and the bark is stripped to reduce excess moisture. The logs, from the Rhizophora apiculata or Rhizophora mucronata trees, are then transported to the kilns by boat and afterwards packed and sealed into an igloo-shaped kiln seven metre high. The process of making charcoal is essentially the carbonization of wood through the removal of moisture. In order to do this, the logs are left to bake inside the kiln for eight to ten days at a temperature of 83_C, and then baked for another twelve to four*** days at 220_C. Finally, the logs are left to cool for another eight days before the kiln is unsealed. This whole process of gradually heating and then cooling takes about a month, depending on the moisture within the harvested logs. The igloo-shaped kiln, which usually can be reused for eight years, is able to produce around ten tones of charcoal from 40 tonnes of mangrove in a single burn. What was once considered a dying trade due to the popularity of conventional gas cooking, the charcoal trade in Matang underwent resurgence in the form of ...

  • GERES, Cambodia, Efficient charcoal cooking stoves - Ashden Award winner This video can be downloaded here: GERES won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2006. To find out more visit the link above and check out the Ashden Awards Blog The Groupe Energies Renouvelables, Environnement et Solidarités (GERES) set up the Cambodian Fuelwood Saving Project (CFSP) which has developed a cheap charcoal stove, the 'New Lao' stove. This uses at least 22% less charcoal than the 'Traditional Lao' stoves which are commonly used in Cambodia. More than 130000 New Lao stoves have been produced by 14 entrepreneurs and sold in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, over the past three years. About 95% of Cambodians cook with biomass fuels. This is costly, has adverse health effects and is bad for the environment. Cambodia's great natural biodiversity is threatened by uncontrolled wood consumption. Much of this demand is for timber and a significant amount is turned into charcoal which is the preferred cooking fuel in cities, used by 40% of the population of Phnom Penh. The area of forest is diminishing but the price of charcoal has hardly increased over the last ten years, reflecting a thriving (but largely illegal) trade, and lack of taxes and other constraining factors. One way of reducing the unsustainable wood consumption is by reducing the demand for charcoal. CFSP have worked with stove users and producers to develop a stove which is more efficient and durable than the conventional bucket-type stoves ...

  • Drawing /Painting Glass of Water (Part 1)- Tips for Charcoal and Pencil Drawing Hint number 1 is to see things as shapes. I like to ***ogize drawing with assembling a jigsaw puzzle because in both you look for shapes to fit together Hint number 2 is to pay close attention to the edges of what you are drawing. Light and shadows can do funny things and in almost anything that you draw you will see a disparity between the qualities of each edge. Hint number three is to develop your drawing like a Polaroid photograph. Polaroid was the company that innovated instant photography. After pushing the shutter button the photograph would come out of the camera and develop before your eyes. What I want you to know about this is that every part of the photo would develop at the same rate and that is how I want you to try to draw next time. In other words, move the drawing tool around, dont get stuck in a favorite spot. Alright, lets slow it down. What you are seeing me do here is pay close attention to the form and the proportions. In other words, I am comparing the sizes of the different shapes and making sure that the placement of each line is correct. I am using vine charcoal a HB pencil and an eraser. I started out with the vine charcoal because it is easy to erase and move around. You will see later in this video that after I am satisfied with the placement of the charcoal, I will hatch over it with a pencil to keep it undisturbed. I am also trying to be aware of the edges of my shapes and I am especially cognizant of the highlight on the top because that ...
