UNICEF: Early childhood education centres make strides in Malawi CHITETA, Malawi, 4 October 2010 -- Every weekday morning, Leviticus, 5, wakes his mother early. He is eager to get to the community-based childcare centre, a red brick building in eastern Malawi's Chiteta village and a 2 km walk from Leviticus' home. During the week, the hall is turned into a preschool for more than 100 three- to five-year-olds. The informal centre -- which is operated entirely by community volunteers -- offers early learning and provides many children with the only nutritious meal they'll have for the day. Chiteta's community-based childcare centre offers what parents and education authorities hope will make a game-changing difference in Malawi's educational goals. The community-based childcare centre in Chiteta is one of around 6000 centres providing much-needed preparation for tens of thousands of children across Malawi. As approximately 1.1 million children under the age of 18 are orphaned across the country, support for early childhood learning is essential. And strides are being made daily. "There is still a big gap, but what we are seeing is that communities themselves are mobilizing," said Chief of Child Protection at UNICEF Malawi Bruce Grant. "Each year hundreds of new centres are opening," he added.
US detention centres face legal limbo When undocumented workers are caught they get sent to a detention facility run by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). There are dozens of detention facilities across the US and some immigrants are even kept in actual prisons with convicted criminals. There have been accusations of mistreatment, lack of medical care, and lack of attorney access at some of these detention facilities. The ACLU successfully sued the ICE to have undocumented families removed from one of the detention facilities because of the conditions. Now, the ACLU is calling for federal oversight for the detention centres to ensure that there are standards in place. Al Jazeera's Mike Kirsch reports.

Long Way Round - Climbing Centre in Kazakhstan A month after leaving the UK and almost 5000 miles (8000 km) from home, Ewan and Charley reached Kazakhstan where they visited the UNICEF-supported Tamgaly Climbing Centre in Almaty. Many families come to Almaty searching for work and a better life, only to find high unemployment and few opportunities. The standard of living is very low and children growing up here are some of the most vulnerable in the country. Over the last few years, there has been an increase in young people falling into crime, drugs and alcohol abuse which puts them at high risk of contracting HIV and AIDS. Whilst schools cannot solve these problems, there is no doubt that they can take positive steps to give children the knowledge and life skills they need. Therefore UNICEF, with funding from British Airways, came up with an innovative and successful way of giving young people a purpose and focus, by installing climbing walls in schools across the country. The walls quite literally help children find a foothold, at school, in the community and in life. The success of this project has been acknowledged by the Government. On seeing the benefits the 10 UNICEF-supported walls have brought to the lives of young people, the Government installed a further nine across the country. Funds raised through the Long Way Round have also been supporting UNICEF's HIV and AIDS prevention work in Kazakhstan. EAC integration centres 33 officers at the East African Community Ministry have graduated as integration officials to help in streamlining border operations. The regional integration centre officers will be charged with coordination of activities at the borders as well as the resolution of any technical and administrative challenges, that may arise in the integration process. East African Community Permanent Secretary David Nalo says the ministry plans to set up integration centres in Busia and Namanga, before rolling them out to other border points.
