  • Insulation: Blown Cellulose Vs. Fiberglass We take a look at a house that has both blown cellulose and fiberglass insulation.
  • Blocking an Open Crawl Space with Cellulose Insulation - In this property a drop ceiling was installed when the home was converted from a single-family to a two-family residence. This is commonly done to conceal ceiling damage, but also to run separate electrical and pluming lines to the upper unit. During the installation of the drop ceiling the upper part of the lath and plaster walls were damaged and/or removed. As a result, it would have been impossible to dense-pack the walls with cellulose without the cellulose being forced into the narrow drop ceiling area. To properly insulate this home and dense-pack the walls with cellulose a large bag was sewn and placed against the exterior wall. Cellulose insulation was then blown into the bag to expand it and create a barrier against the open wall cavities. Though the bag does not create a perfect block, it created the barrier needed to allow the cellulose to back up and pack to approximately 4.0 pounds per cubic foot in the exterior walls.

  • Blocking Open Joist Cavities with Cellulose Insulation - In balloon construction there is no top plate and the floor joist cavities are nailed directly to the wall studs. As a result, the joist and wall cavities are continuous. When dense packing the exterior walls with cellulose insulation you must first block the opening to the floor joist cavity or insulation will continually flow between the floors. This can be accomplished using a long bag that gets filled with cellulose, if access is available, or smaller bags that are filled in the individual area created by each joist cavity.

  • Development of Cellulosic Biofuels Chris Somerville [Director of the EBI, UC Berkeley] Abstract: The earth receives approximately 4000 times as much energy from the sun each year as the total projected human energy use in 2050. Because plants can be deployed on a large scale to capture and store solar energy, I am interested in exploring the degree to which it may become possible to use photosynthesis for sustainable production of renewable carbon-neutral energy. In considering this possibility, the Secretary of Energy of the US has called for the replacement of 30% of the liquid fuels used in the US with biofuels by 2030. I will outline some of the technical issues that must be addressed in order to understand if it is possible to reach this and related goals. I will also discuss some of the areas in which I envision significant technical advances may enable evolution of the biofuels industry. Biography: Chris Somerville is the Director of the new Energy Biosciences Institute at UC Berkeley,University of Illinois and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a professor of Plant and Microbial Biology at UC Berkeley. He has published more than 200 scientific papers and patents in plant and microbial genetics, genomics, biochemistry, and biotechnology. His current research is focused on the characterization of proteins, such as cellulose synthase, implicated in plant cell wall synthesis and modification. Somerville has served as a member of the scientific advisory boards of numerous academic institutions ...

  • Dense pack cellulose insulation from exterior redwood siding First we removed the redwood siding and the middle section of the brown fiber board. Then we pulled out the old fiberglass insulation batts. Fortunately they were stapled on the inside of the stud instead of the face of the stud - so they pulled out without too much trouble. After putting the fiber board back we drilled our 2 inch hole and dense packed with cellulose insulation. There were several small cavities such as where an interior wall meets the exterior wall as well as the corner framing that had no fiberglass insulation at all. By adding cellulose we increase our r-value to near 4.0, we greatly reduce air flow in the stud cavity and we do not have to air seal the exterior wall top plates (the cellulose seals the stud cavity from the inside). This is a low pitch roof ranch and there is just no way to air seal the exterior wall top plates from the inside. Its difficult to even reach the top plate from the attic much less get a foam gun pointed in the correct spot.

  • Cheap and Green Insulation: Recycled Paper Cellulose Recently, Jay's dad started building on some property he owns in Rural Virginia. The first structure built was the garage/workshop. Jay and I were eager for the chance to try out some green building materials as an alternative to the usual stuff. Before traveling over to the east coast for Turkey Day, we did some research along side his pops about what the cheapest, most green insulation material could be used (which could also be purchased at a major box store near by). We found that Recycled Paper Cellulose was the least expensive material you could buy, at 25 cents per sq. foot and it is available through most building material suppliers. The alternatives were 'The Pink Stuff', fiberglass rolls at about 50 cents per sq. foot. I was wary of using fiberglass because of its notorious itch inducing particles that will irritate not just your skin, but your lungs as well! If the particles ever become loose and get into your ventilation system, this can mean big trouble for your internal organs and cancer fighting immune system. Another recycled and mostly benign insulator are the trendy new denim rolls. These are made from recycled scraps from jean manufacturers. This was my top choice until I did a price check. This stuff goes for $1.00 per sq. foot. Yikes! The price factor is still top priority when you have to build, those square feet can add up fast. And when you're trying to convince a retiring baby boomer to go green even though it costs 4 times as much, they're gonna ...

In this example the home was balloon construction and we did nt want cellulose to rise and fill the second story sidewall because additional electrical wires needed to be run down from the attic on the second floor. • Double Cellulose 60 Tablets by Tiens - Tianshi Health Products Tianshi carried out extensive research to produce this natural food supplement that relieves and prevents constipation and other chronic diseases associated with improper elimination of waste from the body. These chewable tablets are developed to stimulate intestinal movement and prevent constipation by supplying food fabric (one of the main human nutrients). When this product is taken in and comes into contact with water, it swells to make a soft bulky material that softens waste products, creating a large amount of soft matter. The volume of this matter produces pressure in the alimentary c*** that helps the body ready itself to eliminate waste. FUNCTIONS It prevents and combats haemorrhoids (piles), dysentery and bloody stools It decreases excessive absorption of cholesterol, thus, preventing coronary heart disease and arteriosclerosis. It helps prevent and check bacterial infection in the appendix. It prevents appendicitis and gallstones. It is effective in weight loss INGREDIENTS Insoluble food fabric - Maize Cellulose; Soluble food fabric - Polyglucosan; Haw Berry powder and natural sweeteners.

  • University of Florida Develops Cellulosic Ethanol Green Gold for Clean Energy Half the automotive fuel in the United States could be replaced with ethanol from renewable agricultural and forest waste, says a University of Florida researcher who has developed a biotechnology "bug" that converts biomass such as sugarcane residues, rice hulls, forestry and wood wastes and other organic materials into ethanol . Lonnie Ingram, a professor of microbiology with UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences has genetically engineered a stratin of E.Coli that produces fuel ethanol from non-edible sugar sources at an estimated cost of $1.30 gallon. Ingram, who is director of the Florida Center for Renewable Chemicals and Fuels at UF, cited a recent report from the US Department of Agriculture and DOE that indicates more than one billion tons of biomass can be produced on a sustainable basis each year. Converting this to fuel ethanol could replace half of all imported petroleum in the United States. Ingram said he genetically engineered the E. coli organisms by cloning the unique genes needed to direct the digestion of sugars into ethanol. With the ethanol genes, the engineered bacteria produce ethanol from biomass sugars with 90 to 95 percent efficiency. Video originally aired on Eco- Tech and is property of the Science Channel.
